From Irena's perspective…

Well…sort of. In "The Americans" on FX both the husband and wife are KGB spies posing as a regular ole American couple in the 1980's. I heard about this show and was instantly intrigued given Jack and Irena's story in Alias. I also found it amusing that J.J. Abrams' darling Keri Russell plays the wife, which, after seeing her short-but-stellar spy performance in Mission Impossible III, I have no doubt she can pull off.

I haven't watched the show yet, but thought y'all might be interested. The show premiered on Jan. 30, but you can catch up online. If you have seen it, what do you think?

Hmmm, wasn't expecting "Sherlock" 3.02 to air already, but I guess today was the day.

I'll be glad to get back to at least some regular programming this week. This holiday TV drought is wearing on me.

Where's that Victor Garber "Sleepy Hollow" episode? There's only 3 eppies left in S1 and I don't see VG listed as a guest in any of them.

Page48 said...

I don't think this is a particularly spoilery post, so I'll let it rip:

Seems that Sherlock's parents in 3.01 are played by Benedict Cumberbatch's parents (neither of whom roll with the Cumberbatch name).

Also seems that Watson's girlfriend is played by Martin Freeman's wife. Seems "Sherlock" is becoming a family affair.

Also noteworthy is that the episode was written by Mycroft Holmes (Mark Gatiss).

"Almost Human" tonight: Alison Schapker unleashes a flurry of 47's and were only half way through the episode.

uncle111 said...

I'll have to catch AH's 47s. I still see them on a regular basis in real life, as well as TV. In fact, my verification numbers for this post have a 47. How funny!!!

Page48 said...

The pilot for Sawyer's "Intelligence" airs tonight, but then the series doesn't resume until March. I'm not sure I get the reasoning for that, but....

Page48 said...

Hmmmm, IMDB says the next eppie of "Intelligence" is March 3rd, but apparently that's bad intel. Seems it switches to Mondays beginning next week.

Page48 said...

POI got off to a rocky start this season, but kicking butt right now. And how about those "Alias" chicks stepping up? I thought Amy Acker owned this episode.

Page48 said...

Sunday, Jan. 12th, Victor Garber joins the Bad Robot parade going on at "The Good Wife". He will be the 2nd "Alias" cast member to play a judge (the other being Kurt Fuller). Of course, Melissa George is a frequent visitor, as is John Noble.

Not that I follow the show, but, ya know...

Page48 said...

"Helix" kicks off tonight at 10:00 p.m.

Will it be any good? Gee, I hope so.

Page48 said...

Finished the first 2 episodes of "Helix". Short version of my verdict: pretty good but not awesome.

I only recognize 2 of the actors, one from "The Killing" and one from "Lost". While it does have Ronald D. Moore's name attached to it, I don't think it's likely to surpass BSG on his list of TV successes.

Page48 said...

Golden Globes tonight for BC's movie ("American Hustle") and connected with JG's movie ("Dallas Buyers Club").

Someday I'll get around to AH, but I rather doubt that I'll be checking out DBC.

Page48 said...

Who knew Kevin Weisman was a series regular in something these days? Not something I'm going to be watching, but something.

Paying the rent, as it were. How depressing must that be?

Page48 said...

Agent Sarah Walker is back in the spy business, joining "24:Live Another Day". Works for me!

Page48 said...

Brief appearance by Vartan in this setup video for S2 of "Bates Motel", a show I have zero interest in.

uncle111 said...

I'm ready for a little SW.

Page48 said...

Not to be overshadowed by Agent Walker's news, John Casey's upcoming new show has a spiffy new trailer.

Page48 said...

After the great run that POI has been on for the last 4 or 5 episodes, it's no surprise that we got a filler eppie tonight, but if it served to get Reese back in the game, I can live with it.

Now, let's get back to regularly scheduled POI programming ASAP.

Page48 said...

Good news on the "Agent Carter" front.

Page48 said...

BC, flanked by that other Jennifer, delivers his acceptance speech for "American Hustle" at the SAG Awards.

Will Tippin with an Oscar? I think this may be the year, although not likely an individual winner. Baby steps.

Page48 said...

NBC is ratcheting up the promo machine for "Believe".

Will this be a more interesting show than "Almost Human"? AH would seem to have plenty of potential, but so far there seems to be zero willingness to get beyond self-contained, shown-way-out-of-order episodes.

Although AH has more Bad Robot running through its veins, B sounds like a serial adventure waiting to happen. And waiting, and waiting. Not debuting until March 10.

Page48 said...

I'm officially jacked about tonight's 2 hour season finale of "Sleepy Hollow".

Next season FOX is promising to run the whole season (which may or may not exceed 13 episodes) without all the breaks that ruined the flow this year. Works for me.

Tonight, I just hope that Victor Garber survives the season. John Noble is already booked for S2, which is great.

Page48 said...

Re: "Sleepy Hollow" season finale, I DID NOT see that coming. How many cliffhangers was that? 4?

Page48 said...

Somebody went to the trouble of matching up scenes in "Alias" with somewhat mirrored images from "Fringe".

One of my favourites is of the bearded prisoners, Jack Bristow and Walter Bishop. I also love the cemetery scenes, where the 2 heroines visit their late fiances' graves.

Imagine the dedication and intimate knowledge of both shows required to go through that exercise. That's just way above my pay grade.

Page48 said...

Nice post-mortem of S1 of "Sleepy Hollow".

Although VG implies that his appearance was a one-off, one of the co-producers begs to differ.

Page48 said...

"Sherlock" serves up an excellent (not to mention shocking)finale.

Now what, another 2 years till we do it again?

uncle111 said...

Wow!! Is this a record number of comments?

Now that the Sochi produced blackout on regular programing is over we got a killer POI back story episode!!

Page48 said...

Uncle, thus endeth the longest hiatus in LTA's history, weighing in at about 7 weeks. Wow!

The Olympics sure put a hammerlock on TV programming. Hats off to those few brave shows who dared go head to head.

I liked POI this week. I was a little worried at first that it would be too standalone, but they quickly managed to pull in a lot of the big players, including some that we haven't seen in a while. And, Root came back just in time to kickstart what I hope will be another string of great episodes similar to what we saw in December.

On the other hand, I was very disappointed with the first season of "Almost Human", which wimped out in its season finale this week. Showing almost every episode out of order and not even bothering with a season-ending cliffhanger almost had me double-checking to see if this really was a Bad Robot show.

I watched the debut of Christian Slater's new show "Mind Games" with a small guest role for Arvin Sloane, but I see no need to continue watching that one.

Am I a little excited about "24: Live Another Day"? Yup, and to celebrate, how about some set photos, including a few of Agent Walker in hot pursuit.

I'm also more than a little excited about "Believe", which kicks off on Monday night. JJ's not even talking about pandering to the 'casual viewers' like he does for every other show he promotes post-"Alias". A new batch of video out today.

Jen presents at the Oscars while Will Tippin squeezes off the selfie that brings Twitter to its knees, alongside his new Jennifer.

Page48 said...

Uncle, it's not beyond the realm of possibility that POI could end up being Bad Robot's longest running series down the road. One more season renewal, which seems assured (at least to me), will send POI past "Alias" and "Fringe" in terms of episodes aired, leaving only "Lost" in its sights.

This 4th season renewal will take Michael Emerson comfortably beyond his 79 episodes as 'Benry' on "Lost".

This week I did a rewatch of the S2 finale of "Continuum" in preparation for the S3 kickoff this coming Sunday.

I must have seen "Syd" flogging Neutrogena a dozen times this week. I wept for the 8 years wasted since "Alias".

Page48 said...

I like POI as much as the next guy, but when I saw someone on Roco's blog declare POI as the "BEST SHOW EVER", I felt compelled to set the record straight.

I remember the Donati Park scene like it was yesterday. Damn, I miss the greatness of "Alias".

uncle111 said...

Page,

I agree. POI is my current favorite shoe, but between it and Alias, no contest.

Page48 said...

JJ's "Believe" settles into its regular Sunday night slot tonight.

I watched the pilot last week. It had some nice moments but it was less than riveting. I'm afraid that it may focus too much on Bo's good-deed-of-the-week at the expense of a more interesting story, although JJ promises there is a lot of story here for the telling. And, JJ NEVER embellishes.

"Continuum" kicks off S3 tonight as well, at least up here in the deeply frozen tundra.

uncle111 said...

Yeah, not sure yet about Believe. I'll catch Continuum online tomorrow.

Page48 said...

Checking out NBC's "Crisis", a 12-parter with familiar faces like Gillian Anderson, Mark Valley (as CIA Director), Max Martini, and Arnold Vosloo.

uncle111 said...

I hadn't heard about Crisis. I'll look at it. Gillian Anderson and Mark Valley were an item in the first season of Fringe.

Page48 said...

Uncle, you're thinking of Anna Torv and Mark Valley. They actually got hitched for a while, albeit not a long while.

uncle111 said...

Yes. Gillian was in X-Files.

Page48 said...

"Crisis" becomes the latest show to feature a Scala and Kolacny Brothers cover tune in their soundtrack. Remember Annie Walker getting shot to one of their songs a couple years back? And the "Homeland" S2 trailer?

Page48 said...

Been watching S2 of BBC's "Line of Duty", which last year featured Lennie James.

Even without Lennie's return, S2 is brilliant TV. The whole season is only 6 episodes, so if you have the chance to watch it, I highly recommend it.

S2 of "The Americans" (the original topic of this ancient blog post) is also very good.

Page48 said...

Apparently, Paleyfest forgot that "Alias" had its 10th anniversary several years ago. Sure, they remembered "Lost", but "Alias", not so much.

Page48 said...

New gig for Jack from "Alias" and Penny from "Lost". Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like my cuppa.

Also on tap, a new show for Nikita on CBS. Again, it doesn't sound like a good fit for me.

Page48 said...

If I gave you code names Freelancer and Mockingbird, what show would come to mind? Welllll, if you were watching TV this evening, your answer might be "Arrow".

uncle111 said...

Holy plagiarism, Batman!

Page48 said...

io9.com in conversation with Amy Acker about the evolution of Root.

Page48 said...

Maggie Q is what, 2 months out of "Nikita" and already has a new series and a pretty cool looking new movie in "Divergent".

Jen, on the other hand, is 8 years past "Alias", with no new series, and zero cool looking movies.

What up with that?

Page48 said...

Just for the record, I don't care how "How I Met Your Mother" ended. Apparently, a lot of people do, though.

Over the 9 years, I think I saw about 20 minutes worth of HIMYM. With sooooo much decent TV to choose from these days, why would I watch ANY sitcom? I can barely make time for the good stuff.

And, no, Blogger, I don't want to give you my cell phone number, but thanks for asking.

uncle111 said...

Page,

I don't think I have ever seen HIMYM. Never sounded like anything I would like. If I want a laugh I watch Duck Dynasty. Yes...I love it!

And,even though I doubt I watch as many shows as you, I have trouble keeping up with what I do watch. Wow! this is post number 447!!!

Page48 said...

Quote from tonight's "Revolution"

"(California) Governor Affleck hasn't been the same since her husband died"

Let's hope she was elected for something less ridiculous than her endorsement of #banbossy.

Page48 said...

Luc Besson is back for more, this time with Morgan Freeman and Scar-Jo in "Lucy". Not quite "Black Widow", but I like Scarlett J. in these kinds of roles.

And, she's rocking the good hair this time, unlike her Captain America do, which is not a good look for her.

Page48 said...

Televisionary tees up a spoiler-lite account of S2 of "The Americans" (which is already 6 episodes old).

I used to love his recaps of "Chuck" episodes. Unfortunately, he didn't follow through till the end of the series.

Page48 said...

With "Nikita" in the rear view mirror, the cast is wasting no time in getting back to work.

Birkhoff's new show, "12 Monkeys", has been given a 12 episode debut season on Syfy (I guess that's one monkey per episode).

The show, or at least the pilot, will also provide work for another "Nikita" dude (Ryan Fletcher) and murdered Fringie, Charlie Francis.

Michael is back with "Salem" (yeah, that's Michael at the 21 second mark).

Nikki is back with a "psychological thriller" on CBS, that doesn't have a title yet. Maggie Q is also set to become a Chinese pirate. Given a choice, I think I'd go for the psychological thriller thingy.

Sean is a regular in "Remedy".

And, of course, Sonya already has one season of "Sleepy Hollow" behind her.

uncle111 said...

A manly confession -- I'm watching the final two episodes of Chuck for the third time in less than a week and I'm laughing, cheering and tearing. This was a great series.

Page48 said...

Uncle, that WAS as manly as manly gets. Ha!! I remember watching the pilot as if it was yesterday. It remains as one of my fave pilot of all time.

"Chuck" was a great series, and I'll never understand how it could struggle for renewal EVERY season. What do audiences want, for crying out loud?

This season, viewers were treated to 13 episodes of "Intelligence", a series about a guy (Sawyer) with a chip in his head (not unlike the Intersect in many ways). Except for the final 2 episodes, it was a standalone, by the book procedural, completely lacking the all the things that made "Chuck" so engaging (a point made in this blogger's comments). In fact, if you have no life whatsoever, just Google 'intelligece chuck' and see how obvious the comparison is between the 2 shows. In fact, there really is NO comparison, because "Chuck" blows "Intelligence" out of the water.

Good news for us is that (I believe) we haven't seen the last of "Chuck". How long we have to wait and how good the result will be remains to be seen. In the meantime, we can revel in Sarah Walker's misguided pursuit of Jack Bauer, beginning on May 5th.

Then, on June 22, we can watch John Casey deal with a deadly virus outbreak on "The Last Ship". Stuck on a ship with Rhona Mitra. Poor boy.

Page48 said...

Whew! It took most of the season, but MAOS took it to a MUCH more appropriate level tonight. Stuff hit the fan for a full 60 minutes.

Should set up a great run in to the S1 finale. Notice I said "should".

Page48 said...

First promo of the year for S5 of "Covert Affairs". Can it already be 5 months (almost) since that gorgeous S4 final scene?

Nothing new in the promo, really, but hopefully S5 will continue the steady improvement in one of the few spy series on TV right now.

Page48 said...

Speaking of CA, S5 sees the addition of a Bad Robot (before there was Bad Robot) veteran, in Amy Jo Johnson.

Of course, she most recently spent 5 seasons on "Flashpoint", starring alongside POI bad boy, Elias (aka Veronica Mars's dad).

Page48 said...

New trailer for "24: Live Another Day". Jack's not too happy with Agent Walker.

Page48 said...

W13 kicks off its 6 eppie wind-down on Monday night, airing in the USA and Canada on the same night for the first time since the series debuted.

Because of that little quirk, this will mark the first time that I have watched an episode on TV instead of my laptop.

uncle111 said...

Well, I've been keeping up with most of my TV shows. POI took a really different turn this season and the various dynamics in play are very interesting.

What has "everyone" else been up to?

Page48 said...

Uncle, "everyone" reporting for duty (my skin crawls when I quote John Kerry).

I'm a little behind on some shows. One of the problems is that all the networks try to cram their shows between Sunday to Wednesday.

One change I made recently is cutting OUAT loose about 6 eppies ago. I realized that I just don't give a crap about anything that goes on there anymore.

The cancellation of "Almost Human" has apparently freed up some room for a longer season of "Sleepy Hollow" next year. A good tradeoff, IMO. I was very disappointed with the lack of any meaningful story on AH. Even if the episodes weren't totally out of order, there wasn't much substance.

MAOS is finishing the season on much more solid footing than it started, but still room for improvement if it comes back next year.

"The Blacklist" has been a nice addition this year, although it doesn't move forward as quickly as I would like it to.

The final season of W13 has been a letdown. I was hoping for a big finish.

"The Americans" is always good.

I watched "Resurrection" (a grand total of 8 episodes). Decent, but there are a LOT of shows like that right now.

I've been watching "Believe" and "Crisis", but I doubt that either will be renewed. I'll survive the loss of both.

POI has been great, especially this time of year when the standalones are shelved for the balance of the season.

Still watching "Arrow" and I've added "The 100" to Wednesday night. Better than I thought it would be.

Glad to have Jack Back, even though he head butted Agent Walker. (still, she earned it). Glad to see Walker portrayed as the brightest light at the CIA.

Speaking of Agent Walker (the other Agent Walker), I'm anxious for the return of "Covert Affairs". Also looking forward to trying "The Last Ship", and the return of "Fallen Skies".

Those are the shows I can think of off the top of my head. Thank goodness a lot of them have short seasons.

Page48 said...

More summer stuff I'm looking forward to includes "Extant", the final six-pack of episodes of "The Killing" (moved from AMC to Netflix), Sean Bean's "Legends", and S2 of "Under the Dome".

Also currently watching "Continuum" (gotta shut the computer off to follow that one), and S2 of "Orphan Black".

uncle111 said...

Page,

AH was always marginal for me. I haven't missed it since they took their break. I followed SH. MAOS was so slow most of the season and didn't have much spark, and looked like it didn't have much budget. I didn't like BL at first, but I am in to it now. I guess it's been several seasons since I watched W13. I'm now following TA. I lost interest in Believe and Crisis. POI is still me favorite and it has really expanded this season. Sometimes I wonder if I want to keep watching Arrow. It's getting to be same ole same ole. I never got into 24 because it just seemed like nothing but an angry JB yelling and shooting all the time. As for all the others you mentioned, I haven't seen them, I am ready for more CA!

uncle111 said...

I forgot to say that Continuum is one of my regulars.

Page48 said...

The "Arrow" season finale is shaping up in a similar fashion as the S1 finale (total destruction of part/all of Starling City). That won't work for 7 seasons, maybe not even for 3.

I'm a little concerned about the growing domination of comic book themed shows and movies overall. "Arrow" is already spinning off "The Flash" and there's no reason to think they're finished.

Netflix is bringing a half dozen new MARVEL shows on board shortly and "Gotham" is coming to TV next season.

I'd rather see TV get back to more sci-fi stuff that exists in a more real-world kind of environment. In other words, more "Alias", "Fringe", "Lost" and POI. Let's just get Bad Robot back to work and leave superheroes to the summer blockbusters where they belong.

Page48 said...

Speaking of CA, here's a new promo for the upcoming season.

uncle111 said...

I am ready!!

uncle111 said...

I watched Capt. America Winter Soldier the other day for the first time. I just watched MAOS episode 17 today. I had no idea they were synched!!!! Now I'm starting episode 18. How cool is this????

Page48 said...

Uncle, the word seems to be that the syncing of the movie with the series is the reason that MAOS plodded along for most of the season. Basically having to bide time until CATWS was released so the story would mesh.

This will no doubt be the case with other MARVEL movies, since they co-exist in the same big picture universe. Not ideal for the TV show, but when it works, it works.

Good news from ABC yesterday. They are proceeding with the "Agent Carter" series and renewing MAOS for S2.

Page48 said...

NBC was busy today, taking the axe to 2 Bad Robot shows ("Believe" and "Revolution") and "Crisis.

Not that JJ is deeply involved with his TV shows, but his reputation for awesomey TV goodness has taken a ^*%#kicking in the last few years.

"Undercovers" - 13 episodes
"Alcatraz" - 13 episodes
"Almost Human" - 13 episodes
"Revolution" - 2 season

Really, in the last 6 years, the Robot's only success stories have been POI and "Fringe".

uncle111 said...

The recent axes are ones I gave up on or never started.

And don't Orci and Kurtzman write H5O and aren't they JJ's guys?

Page48 said...

Uncle, part of the problem with JJ is that Orci/Kurtzman USED TO BE his guys.

Witness the immediate success of Orci/Kurtzman's "Sleepy Hollow", which got a 2nd season renewal after about 2 episodes. Fast forward to Bad Robot's "Almost Human", which occupied the same time slot, and the result was eerily similar to most of the Robot's recent efforts.

Meanwhile, H50 is renewed for S5.

Page48 said...

Two excellent season finales tonight in MAOS and, in particular, POI.

This current TV season started with 4 Bad Robot shows on the schedule, but POI is the only one left standing. After tonight's festivities, I can't wait to see where next season goes.

Page48 said...

Some of the more interesting looking NEW shows next season are coming from TNT.

"Legends", "The Librarians", "The Last Ship", maybe even "Proof" look worthy of a try.

Page48 said...

First footage of Nikki's upcoming series on CBS. Unless I'm missing something, this is textbook procedural cop stuff.

Page48 said...

Whilst I wish Maggie Q rotsa ruck, I think Agent Doggett's new series, "Scorpion" looks like more fun.

uncle111 said...

Page,

I just looked at the trailers and I think I agree with your take.

Page48 said...

New York Times piece on POI. Not the finale, but the show overall.

uncle111 said...

Page,

POI and MAOS were both top notch!!! But I think POI is going to be a bit stressful next season!

Page48 said...

Uncle, I'm just glad POI didn't kill off any of the main cast. It will be stressful, but I'm anxious to see how Harold and Co. regain the upper hand (I'm assuming they will).

And poor Fusco is out of the loop and on his own? He just heard about "the machine" for the first time last night. Somebody should read him in someday.

Page48 said...

Lengthy piece about "Continuum" with lots of input from Agent Rachel.

The show's creator hopes for 7 to 10 seasons to tell the whole story. I like Rachel Nichols, but wouldn't it have been nice for Jen to get 10 seasons of a show like this?

Page48 said...

"The Americans" setting up for a beauty season finale next week.

Trust no one!

Page48 said...

A new spy movie for the fall, "Kingsman: The Secret Service"

uncle111 said...

Ahh. Mr. Darcey Meets The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

I'm in!!!

Page48 said...

Uncle, Mr. Darcy has another interesting looking movie coming up in "Eye in the Sky", although there's no trailer yet.

He was also in "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" a couple of years ago.

Page48 said...

First trailer for "The Equalizer".

Page48 said...

I've been ever-so-slowly doing a rewatch of "Fringe". I was highly critical of F in the early days, and with good reason, but I have to say that, with the benefit of knowing where the series eventually goes, it's great to reconnect with the characters.

In light of Bad Robot's recent string of failures, I find that I have a new appreciation for the painful repetition of those early "Fringe" episodes as it fumbled its way toward becoming one of the Robot's more enduring and endearing efforts. Not "Alias", but pretty special in its own way.

Page48 said...

First trailer for Mia Maestro's new series, "Strain". I think that's 'Nadia' at the 19 second mark.

Those opening scenes bare a striking resemblance to the pilot for "Fringe".

uncle111 said...

Page,

I'm just now replying to your comment about your Fringe rewatch. I have been thinking of doing that myself. I skipped out on it during the first season, but really got in to it when I came back several seasons later. It ended with a real bang! I'm considering working into a complete rewatch soon.

Page48 said...

Uncle, "Fringe" looks pretty good nowadays when you stack it up against "Revolution", "Believe", "Alcatraz" and "Almost Human".

Bad Robot has lost a lot of its swagger in recent years, largely I suspect because JJ is just lending his name to all of these projects that don't really have any Robot DNA in them to begin with.

Page48 said...

Just watched the pilot for "Rubicon" for the first time since it originally aired.

Based on just the first 10 minutes of delicious paranoia, I would have renewed it for a 2nd season.

Page48 said...

June at last, June at last.

Time for some summer series to kick off.

"Defiance" - S2 - June 19
"Falling Skies" - S4 - June 22
"The Last Ship" - S1 - June 22
"Covert Affairs" - S5 - June 24
"Under the Dome" - S2 - June 30

This is good, because, with "Continuum" and "Orphan Black" winding up their seasons, there isn't much on tap between now and the fall season. And, we don't have the usual contribution from "Burn Notice" helping out this year.

uncle111 said...

I'm still here. Just busy trying to make bill paying money.

This summer, the danger hits too close to home. ‪Covert Affairs‬ premieres in 5 DAYS. https://amp.twimg.com/v/4bbb6339-99c5-4bc5-b5b1-1b76b30bf97a

Copy and paste!

uncle111 said...

Yes, I'll be there enjoying and also selling my replicas. Not to brag (yeah, right!), but I am also part of the inner circle for this event. http://thegoldenanniversaryaffair.weebly.com/

Page48 said...

Uncle, I'm ready to tackle some "Covert Affairs". It's gotten better every season so far, so hopefully this year will continue that trend (though, frankly, I'm not keen on the "new partner").

As far as I'm concerned, being part of the "inner circle" is nothing short of a license to brag.

Continuing my "Fringe" rewatch tonight (as we speak).

uncle111 said...

Page,

Being part of the inner circle certainly doesn't generate it's own money. But it can lend credibility when it comes to marketing replicas of the original guns. And the bragging rights ain't bad. :)

Page48 said...

Somebody from Forbes remembers "Alias", applauds the show for making it first and foremost about the characters.

Amen to that. Just think about Syd throwing her pager into the ocean or having 'the talk' with Dixon near the oil rigs. Not to mention thousands of other great character moments.

uncle111 said...

Every now and then someone shows that they not only remember Alias, but that there was something good there. I'm trying to decide if it's been long enough since I last watched the whole series that I could do it again, or if I watch it again now will I begin to get a little burned out on it...which I REALLY do not want to risk.

Page48 said...

Looks like Dixon's got himself a job with a few Bad Robot connections(Carlton Cuse, Mark Pellegrino, even Agnes Bruckner).

I'm not sure how different this will be from ABC's "Resurrection" which aired earlier this year. I haven't bothered watching the French original of "The Returned" even though it's airing here right now.

Page48 said...

Watched the season finale of "Continuum". This is one show that I absolutely have to shut off my computer in order to watch. It's beautifully complicated. You just can't afford to not pay attention.

Page48 said...

Interview with the powers-that-be at "Covert Affairs". Setting the table for the new season, which kicks off tonight (but which I won't get to see until Thursday).

Page48 said...

Uncle, re: your fear of burning out on "Alias" by watching too many times, dare I confess that I've only watched the entire series, wire-to-wire, twice, and for the same fear of over-exposure.

And, here's the kicker: my one and only re-watch was just after the series ended. For argument's sake, let's call it 7 years.

It's too bad there isn't enough interest left at LTA to do an entire series re-watch. That would really be the way to add value to it for everyone.

In the meantime, there are just so many other shows that I want to keep up with that I can't picture devoting the hours necessary to watch "Alias" again in its entirety. I realllllllly miss watching the episodes 'live' each week. Those really were the days.

uncle111 said...

Page,

Sorry to be brief about it, but let me say that I completely agree with what you just wrote!! Maybe we can figure out a way, though.

Now I'm headed home, having only gotten a small amount of work/progress on jobs done. Well, tomorrow is another day.:)

Page48 said...

Can't contain my enthusiasm over a new season of CA, so I updated my avatar to reflect probably my favourite scene from the entire series to date..."Wake up, wake up, wake up, we're almost home"

Annie, I hope this will be a great season. for all our sakes. As fans of the spy genre, we're counting on you.

Page,

I just sent the trailer for the new spy movie with Colin Firth to a friend in Hollywood and here is the reply he just sent:
"The director was attached to UNCLE years ago. I can’t help but think this was his way of still doing UNCLE."

Page48 said...

Uncle, I applaud anyone that dedicated to bringing the spy genre to the big or little screen.

The loss this year of "Nikita" and "Burn Notice" is leaving a void in the small screen spy world. There is a popular new spy show on AMC called "Turn" (actually from "Nikita" showrunner Craig Silverstein) but it's set during the Revolutionary War. Period pieces aren't my cuppa, although I think "The Americans" is pretty good.

Looking forward to giving Sean Bean's "Legends" a try, but who knows how that will go?

Caught the first CA of the season. Looks like Annie's going after a mole this year. Imagine that, a mole in the CIA. I don't like his chances.

"Fringe" is a journey and not always an easy one. I just sat through 1.18, one of my least favourites of the series. It's what I call the 'vampire' episode.

With episodes like this, I just have to try to enjoy hanging out with the main characters. Knowing that we've seen the last of them allows me to be a bit more appreciative of them while I wait for the good stuff to come around.

How did I miss the Orci/Kurtzman breakup?

Fortunately, it seems to only apply to movies, and they will continue to team up for TV.

So, Orci will now direct the next "Star Trek" movie while JJ fiddles around with "Star Wars". Personally, I wish they'd all just get back to TV.

A gaggle of "Alias" (Pinkner, Nemec, Applebaum) writers teaming up for a summer show to air on CBS next year.

Based on a book I've never heard of. I kinda wish everything wasn't based on a book or a comic these days.

uncle111 said...

I don't know how I missed the movies Red and Red2, but these are great! Have you seen these, Page?

Page48 said...

Uncle, I've seen both "Red" and "Red 2".

I liked them both, but as a Morgan Freeman fan, I preferred the first installment.

Aging spies, what's not to like??

Will Tippin (voice of Rocket Raccoon) and Amy Pond (Nebula) in the latest "Guardians of the Galaxy" trailer.

Amy Pond (in all her badassery) is only visible at the 2:22 mark.

Page48 said...

BTW, Uncle, speaking of "RED", I don't know if you've seen Helen Mirren in "The Debt" (from 2010), but I enjoyed that one as well.

TD is a spy movie as well, but has a much more serious tone than "RED", which tends to be more of a romp, albeit an entertaining romp.

The younger version of Mirren's character is played by Jessica Chastain (who is in just about everything these days). Chastain, physically, reminds me of Sydney at times in this movie.

Love me some good spy movies.

Back in the day, ABC gave us "Truth Be Told", the Sydney Bristow story.

Tonight, ABC Family gave us "Truth Be Told" the story of a bi-racial, lesbian couple raising a) biological b) adopted c) mixed race and d) foster kids, leaving only one politically correct box un-ticked, that of the loveable transgendered pet (you know you want one).

Mercifully, I've never heard of this show ("The Fosters"), but the episode title grabbed my attention immediately, and, unfortunately I made the mistake of looking it up.

Syd, how could you just leave us here to fend for ourselves?

Page48 said...

I watched Nadia in the pilot eppie of "The Strain" tonight. I liked it. Horror elements were kept to a minimum, which is a good thing, IMO. I love a good thriller, but I'm not up for full-on horror.

"The Strain" had some familiar faces and was never more "out there" than a Season 1 episode of "Fringe". I'll continue to watch it until it gives me a reason not to.

As mentioned a while back, USA is rolling out a stinky batch of new shows for the coming season, but "Dig" looks like it could be an exception.

It will have to be strong out of the gate cuz it's only a 6 episode "event" series. "Event" is the new buzzword these days.

Apparently, it's being filmed in Jerusalem (at least for S1), so whether or not production is ever completed may depend on when Hamas runs out of rockets.

First trailer for Nerd's new show, "12 Monkeys".

Little glimpse of Charlie Francis and another member of Team Nikita in there as well

Page,

Here's what the shows you posted about recently made me think when I watched the trailers (and thanks for posting):
Guardians- entertaining
The Debt- very interesting
The Fosters- already tired of this kind of theme, but I’m afraid they’re just getting started
The Strain- going to take a look
The Dig- also very interesting
12 Monkeys- also very interesting

And here's a video of my latest project- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kualp_HLWXY In real life it's louder and cooler than it seems on the video.

Page48 said...

Uncle, re: your new video, I think that cardboard box is ready to confess.

Page48 said...

I'm glad Roberto Orci didn't bring any of this to "Alias". I know "Matador" is a spy show and I should be grateful, but.....

In fairness, I haven't actually seen the pilot, but I may have seen enough.

Page48 said...

USA debuted 2 of its new shows on earlier tonight. Talking, of course, about "Rush" and "Satisfaction".

The Boston Herald summed it up better than I did: "USA Network continues to move away from its comedy past (“Monk,” “Psych”) with two new dramas that arrive with all the markings of magnificent failures".

I can't add anything to that. USA is 'blue skies' no more, which is a shame, because there is a place for that kind of programming, IMO. It's sad to think that a show like BN might not even make it onto USA's roster as it heads off in this new direction.

Trailer for Peter Bishop's first post-"Fringe" show, "The Affair".

Verdict? You're on your own with this one, Peter. See ya!

Just watched the Affair trailer. Me too!

Finally, an actual trailer for the new season of DW, which kicks off with a "feature length" episode on August 23, almost a full 8 months after the Doctor's Christmas Day regeneration.

Will DW return to a serial format this season? Probably too much to wish for, but, either way, it's time for some Time Lord action.

"Covert Affairs": good to have Eyal back this week, if only briefly. Too bad they can't make more room for him.

Is McQuaid going to turn out to be this year's Big Bad? Too soon to tell, of course, but he's on board this season for a reason and no one else has emerged yet.

uncle111 said...

Page,

I've ways felt that he was bad. I don't know if they want us to sense that and plan to wait to reveal it till the tension has built up, or if they are going to reveal it us soon and let us sweat as we watch Annie ignorantly fall further and further into a trap.

Just in case you facebook, here is a link to one of my pages where I tell a little about the Man From U.N.C.L.E. fan film I had a small part in and that I supplied some props for. The film is about 105 min. long. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Man-From-Uncle-Gun/186395181410983

uncle111 said...

I forgot, you'll notice an Alias link in the picture I posted.

Page48 said...

Uncle, I remember you posting that photo before

I was quite proud of myself for spotting the bolo tie as a Marshall Flinkman accessory. The 47 was a "tad" less subtle.

uncle111 said...

Page,

That was a good catch on the bolo tie.

Page48 said...

I'm liking "Extant" so far.

Three episodes in now and it's full on trust-no-one conspiracy stuff and some slightly futuristic sci-fi to boot. And, heck, it's not even on cable (CBS).

Stars Halle Berry, POI's 'Control' (Camryn Manheim) and one of those "ER" doctors from a few years ago.

Page48 said...

Looks like Hamas is dedicated to creating jobs in the US.

USA's "Dig" pulls up stakes in Israel and moves to Albuquerque.

Page48 said...

Make room for another trailer for "Dig".

uncle111 said...

Page,

I still need to try a couple of your links, but after watching 2 (or3?)episodes of Nadia's new series I decided it wasn't for me. Not into modern vampire movies, though this one seemed more traditional in nature than most of the recent ones.

Page48 said...

Uncle, I'm always reluctant to delve too far into the horror/monster realm as well. I cringed every time "Fringe" crossed that line, but fortunately they always hit the brakes before things got out of hand. I somehow don't think that "The Strain" will show similar restraint.

Page48 said...

It's that time of year again, when you can't swing a cat without banging into fresh Comic Con video.

Here's a "Sleepy Hollow" interview.

Page48 said...

Comic-Con trailer has me all jacked up about the upcoming season of POI.

Bring it on!

Page48 said...

Any chance I'll be checking out Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar"?

Hells, yeah, I will!

uncle111 said...

Page,

Looks good!!

I just started watching The Last Ship and have 1 episode to go to be caught up. I LOVE IT!!!!!

Page48 said...

Uncle, "The Last Ship" kind of reminds me of last year's "Last Resort", only with decent ratings.

Good to see 'John Casey' back at work.

Now, if TNT can do as well with Sean Bean's "Legends" (Aug. 13)....

Page48 said...

"Covert Affairs":

Annie is becoming too dependent on McQuaid to save her bacon in sticky situations. The more he does that, the more we trust him. The more we trust him......I'm thinking probably the more we shouldn't trust him.

Page48 said...

"Alias" in the news. Well, sorta.

When everyone else has forgotten about "Alias"....it's British gays to the rescue with '10 Reasons You Should Know About...Alias'

And, the article doesn't even mention the now un-closeted VG. God knows I read it with one eye covered just in case it went there.

uncle111 said...

SMILE!

I don't remember Alias getting that much good press here at the time, or since.

Page48 said...

Uncle, definitely not since.

I read another article this evening that suggested that JG should do "more" TV work. Not sure what the writer meant by "more" since "All the Time in the World" was her last scripted appearance in anything TV related.

Nevertheless, I agree with the sentiment.

And, while I'm nagging on Jen (yet again), why is it that she can show up with Matthew McConaughey in "Dallas Buyers Club" (aka snooooozefest), but when in comes to the potentially excellent "Interstellar", the honour goes to Anne Hathaway? Why not the other way around?

Hi LTA friends! Just wanted to drop in and say that there is a new post (if you can believe it)! I saw your idea for a series rewatch and love it, wish I could join you (alas, 6-month old baby = no free time), but wanted to give you an area to discuss. Enjoy!!
