From Irena's perspective…

Well…sort of. In "The Americans" on FX both the husband and wife are KGB spies posing as a regular ole American couple in the 1980's. I heard about this show and was instantly intrigued given Jack and Irena's story in Alias. I also found it amusing that J.J. Abrams' darling Keri Russell plays the wife, which, after seeing her short-but-stellar spy performance in Mission Impossible III, I have no doubt she can pull off.

I haven't watched the show yet, but thought y'all might be interested. The show premiered on Jan. 30, but you can catch up online. If you have seen it, what do you think?

Finished off my final 2 eppies of BN. I did a double take when I saw Gordon Dean (Tyrees Allen) as the director of the CIA. I can't recall another actor who appeared in both "Alias" and BN.

I couldn't help but notice the BN's final episode was titled "Reckoning". Where have I seen that episode title before? Oh yeah, "Alias" 1.06, that's where.

The finale was full of fan treats. Sam getting to use his "you know spies, bunch of bitchy little girls", Fi got you use her "should we shoot them?", and Jesse with "that's how we do it". And I particularly like the final lines of the series from Fi.

The significant death had to be Maddie. No one else would have been acceptable to fans, IMO. And must I point out the similarity between her death and that of Jack Brisow?? Assuming Jack died of course, and I'm not ready to concede that one for real.

As decent a finale as the writers planned for BN, there's one thing that just bugs me. Why didn't Michael just explain to Fi (on the roof) that the CIA was on its way and they were going to take James into custody? Then there wouldn't have been a showdown between Sonya and Fi and Maddie wouldn't have had to die, not to mention Sonya herself (oh Michael, how could you shoot that kind of hotness?).

Bottom line? Solid ending. There's a lot to be said for planning a show's final season ahead of time, rather than getting the axe mid-season and then writers having to cobble something together.

Page,

I would have gotten rid of Madeline 1st season, but it may have been worth keeping her around for this ending. It was a good one.

I found myself wanting to see Micheal knock off Dean. Too much bad blood still there :)

But I thought it was a very good finale.

And, no Jack Bristow didn't really die. You can read it again here if you like. I just posted it for you at: http://page47.net/Alias%20Revelation/ALIAS%20-%20REVELATION%20_revised_.pdf

I still want to rework this as a novel.

Page48 said...

Ah, yes! "Alias: Revelation". It has definitely been a while.

uncle111 said...

Page,

I was reading over it just before I posted it, and I have to say I was enjoying it. I'm going to have to read it again soon.

uncle111 said...

Page,

Did you ever see the spy spoof In Like Flint? I just watched it free with Amazon Prime. It is a 60's spy spoof. Very politically incorrect. I saw it when it was originally released.

Page48 said...

Uncle, I don't recall seeing ILF, but I've seen enough James Coburn and Lee J. Cobb movies over the years that I wouldn't rule out having seen it years ago. I notice that it was a sequel to "Our Man Flint".

I watched the trailer and it definitely has the 60's written all over it.

Page48 said...

Hmmmm. I'm watching the pilot for Orci/Kurtzman's "Sleepy Hollow". In fact, Orci/Kurtzman are the only reason I'm watching the pilot.

Bearing in mind that they were on Team "Alias", and are co-creators of "Fringe" (neither of which achieved a full 5 seasons), it strikes me as ambitious to suggest a workable 7-season plan for a show about a headless horseman.

Page48 said...

Winston (Chi McBride) from "Human Target" is the new guy on H50 this season, while Guerrero (Jackie Earle Haley) shows up in the new "Robocop" movie.

Page48 said...

Well, last night I was pretty skeptical that even Bad Robot veterans could turn "Sleepy Hollow" into something I could watch, but I actually found the pilot to be very watchable.

It wasn't because of the headless horseman himself, but because of everything going on around him. There were hints of "The X-Files", "Fringe", OUAT, and even moments that harkened back to Orci/Kurtzman's old show, a little thing we like to call "Alias".

The whole idea is batsh!t crazy, but if the pilot is any indication, it should be entertaining. One thing that DOES scare me is that this morning's reviews are almost universally and enthusiastically favourable. Isn't that the kiss of death?

After 2 seasons, I'm finding the whole fantasy fairy-tale world of OUAT is becoming a little tedious, and I really don't think this season's spinoff is necessary at all. I think SH may be able to thrive if it can occupy a more adult space and lean on its X-Filey roots.

Page48 said...

Yeah, I think I'd be up for a little "Agent Carter".

uncle111 said...

I'm in the middle of SH. And I'm in for Agent Carter!!

uncle111 said...

Just finished SH. I liked it. Having read Revelation a number of times I'm up for a creative sci-fi that uses it as the theme, depending on where they take it. But this looks good so far.

Page48 said...

Uncle, I was pleasantly surprised with SH. I hadn't even planned on giving it a try, but glad I did.

Page48 said...

BTW, re: SH, next week's promo gives us a glimpse of Abbie's sister, Jenny, who just happens to be an agent of Division (Sonya).

Page48 said...

The "Covert Affairs" mid-season finale, IMO, pushed every single button. Awesome stuff.

And, they finally brought Eyal back. I've been missing him this season. And, I gather he'll be back again this season.

Page48 said...

Uncle, I wonder if Solo knows he's being watched.

Page48 said...

"Sleepy Hollow", off to a promising start already, just got an upgrade, with the addition of John 'Walter Bishop' Noble in a 'major' recurring role.

Page48 said...

Oh, Jen, do us a favour!. Do I have to go down to Hollyweird and start making decisions for you? Like power of attorney or something.

Page48 said...

Remember early on in "Fringe" when they talked about "the Pattern". Well, here's another pattern that keeps repeating itself.

Every post-"Alias" Bad Robot show begins with JJ offering the same sales pitch: it won't be complicated like "Alias".

Recall JJ's fairy tale about he and Grunberg watching "Alias" one day and having no idea WTF was going on. That was his sales pitch for "Fringe"

Making the rounds this week is an early pitch for "Lost". The so-called series 'bible' for "Lost" promises self-contained episodes with no big mystery to be solved. In other words, not complicated like "Alias".

Also hitting the interwebs this week is JJ's sales presentation for the upcoming "Almost Human". In no way will AH be serialized like "Fringe" eventually became. They won't fall into that trap again, that's for sure. Wink, wink, nudge, nudge, say no more!

It's apparent that JJ knows the difference between what viewers want from Bad Robot and what network suits want to hear. Spewing the same self-contained, low serialization nonsense seems to be a necessary way of getting shows on the air, after which those issues can be addressed.

Page48 said...

Remember the outrage here 7 years ago following the series finale of "Alias"?

Well, be glad you didn't invest in 96 episode of "Dexter" cuz the internet is on fire this morning about its crappy finale. A small sampling on Seriable.

Personally, I think I've seen a maximum of 2 episodes of "Dexter" over the years, so I'm not feeling the betrayal, but it just reinforces my theory that it's a lot easier to tell a story than it is to end a story.

I watched the pilot for CBS's "Hostages", but It didn't do much of anything for me.

Now watching the pilot for NBC's "The Blacklist" starring James Spader and Echo's handler from "Dollhouse".

Interesting what Jace at Televisionary has to say about "The Blacklist" in his Fall-Winter TV Preview:

The Blacklist (Monday at 10 p.m.)

Log line: One of the FBI’s most wanted fugitives mysteriously turns himself in and offers to help the bureau find a sought-after terrorist, but only if he can work solely with a rookie FBI profiler fresh out of Quantico.

Cast: James Spader, Megan Boone, Diego Klattenhoff, Harry Lennix, Ryan Eggold.

Lacob: I was wary of this slick thriller—in which a criminal mastermind teams up with a rookie FBI profiler (sound familiar?)—but I actually found it enormous fun once the action kicked into top gear. Spader is at his scenery-chewing best, but it works here, and Boone convincingly conveys the newness of her experience with a surprising steeliness that works quite effectively. While the reveal at the end is a little too Alias-esque, it does set up a slew of intriguing story threads to be picked up down the road.

Fallon: Just when it seems like The Blacklist was going to be a B-level Silence of the Lambs rip-off, an out-of-nowhere action set piece comes crashing through midway through the episode, instantly invigorating the episode with a jolt that carries through the rest of the hour. Suddenly, James Spader’s creepy-intense former criminal becomes more interesting, and Megan Boone’s Clarice Starling–lite more empathetic and, more important, her own uniquely intriguing character. The final act reaches Homeland levels of intensity.

Verdict: Sign us up.

Note his use of the word Alias-esque, though in a slightly derogatory way.

Here's a pilot review from IGN. It too, invokes the word "Alias".

Here's another article. This one claims that TB blends "Silence of the Lambs" with "Alias".

So, what to make of all of this? Well, first of all, given a choice between "Hostages" and TB, I'm already far more interested in TB. "Hostages" was a little boring, IMO, and I hate to imagine how they will drag this storyline out over 15 episodes.

TB, on the other hand, sported a fair amount of action, not all of which was believable, due in large part to how quickly events unfolded. It could have benefited from a longer pilot, but hey, maybe they're just ambitious.

"The Blacklist" warrants further investigation, and yes, I can understand the people who reach for the "Alias" comparison. It's "out there" the way "Alias" was, it has the gutsy female agent, an "evil" mastermind, a crazy twist at the end. I think it could be fun. At least someone is trying.

Page48 said...

As if to cozy up even more to "Alias", next week's "The Blacklist" is titled "The Freelancer" and guest stars Katya Derevko aka Isabella Rosselini.

Page48 said...

Interview with former "Alias" writer/producer John Eisendrath (and Megan Boone), who is currently the executive producer of "The Blacklist".

Of course, we all recall that Eisendrath was the guy behind "My Own Worst Enemy" (also on NBC), which was cancelled just as it was getting interesting.

Page48 said...

So, there we have it. Tuesday TV is back. I can't remember the last time I watched TV on a Tuesday, cuz frankly, there's been no reason to.

The pilot of MAOS was, as reviewers indicated, serviceable but not brilliant. I expect MAOS to improve as time goes by.

Also tonight was POI 3.01; Not sure why they moved it to 10:00 p.m.; I thought it had a few awkward moments as it tried to reset for a new season with Carter busted to 'officer' and Shaw finding her way as a series regular. I fully expect POI to find its S3 legs shortly and have another strong season, even if this episode felt a little case-o-the-week.

uncle111 said...

I'm in for MAOS, POI (of course), and Blacklist.

Re: Blacklist- Reddington is Henry Wilcox a few years in the futrure.

POI- I want Shaw for my next door neighbor:)

Page48 said...

Uncle, Shaw living next door would be like the ultimate Neighbourhood Watch. Now, if I had Root living next door, I don't think I'd be able to sleep a wink.

Reddington and Wilcox are both players. Something tells me Reddington may turn out to be the better man. I like Elizabeth, the FBI chick. I think this show could be good. I love the big twist with Elizabeth's husband. Did not see that one coming.

uncle111 said...

Shaw - maybe she'd let me help out :)

Page48 said...

With the good shows, I always like to do a rewatch online before the next episode airs. I always find that my focus is much better when I have a show on my computer screen with earbuds plugged in.

So, I've had the chance to rewatch both "The Blacklist" and MAOS on my laptop, and they were both better the 2nd time around. I think these are going to be great viewing.

Add JJ's "Almost Human" (which I expect to be a winner) to those 2 and this could be one of the better new seasons that we've had in several years. If the mid-season offerings, JJ's "Believe", Sawyer's "Intelligence" and Jack's "24: Live Another Day" are any good at all, it will be an embarrassment of riches....which we totally deserve, of course.

Page48 said...

If "The Blacklist" does nothing else, it's certainly inserting "Alias" back in the conversation.

Another example and another.

Different people have different views on why TB reminds them of "Alias", but the connection is almost universal.

Going back to the first link for a second, here's a list of Paul Levinson's blog posts with the label "Alias", one of which is contained in a glowing recommendation of "The Americans".

Page48 said...

Ah, yes. Just a week after Claire Danes won her 2nd consecutive Emmy for her portrayal of CIA agent Carrie Mathison, "Homeland" returns later tonight for S3. I can't believe it's been 9 months.

Page48 said...

Oh, I don't know, I don't know, I just don't know.

I've dismissed "Breaking Bad" for 5 years now, but I don't know if I can avoid it any longer.

Tonight's series finale is eliciting such overwhelming praise, not only about this episode, but about the entire series.

Just look at some of the comments tonight on IMDB, all written after the series finale:

"Breaking Bad is television as God intended"

"Season 5 of BREAKING WILL BE Remembered AS THE SINGLE GREATEST Achievement IN Television HISTORY"

" I'm so glad I got to experience this perfect show with an ending that left only one unanswered question: What am I supposed to do now?"

"there is no doubt that this show is as close to perfect as we will witness a TV show in this generation. Breaking Bad is truly a masterpiece"

" The final 8 episodes were simply perfection culminating in what at this moment feels like the best series finale of all time"

Even Nikki Stafford, whose opinion I have to respect, posted tonight that this was "the best series finale ever". A couple of weeks ago she described watching the third to last episode while on a plane to Hawaii, saying "I stared out the window, thinking about how this show just gave me the best, most satisfying hour of television I think I've ever seen".

I think the time has come for me to put my preconceived notions on hold for now, and find out for myself it BB really is everything they say it is. The finale, BTW, currently carries a 9.8 rating on IMDB.

BB is only 62 episodes in total and I need to know if this thing is real.

Page48 said...

Remember that "Agent Carter" clip I posted the other day?

Who is Hayley Atwell's stunt double in the upcoming "Captain America: The Winter Soldier"? Yup, Shauna Duggins.

Agent Bristow may be retired, but her stunt double is still kicking ass.

Page48 said...

First sign of infiltration of "Alias" personnel into MAOS.

Tonight's co-executive producer is veteran Bad Robotian, Monica Owusu-Breen, who co-wrote many a JJ Abrams episode ("Alias", "Fringe", "Lost") along with writing partner, Alison Shapker. Of course they also wrote a bunch of "Brothers & Sisters" episodes as well, but we all make mistakes.

The Breen/Shapker partnership appears to be over as Breen was involved in the first season of "Revolution" with no sign of Shapker.

Now, wouldn't it be nice to see some "Alias" ACTORS get some face time on MAOS?

Page48 said...

An interview with Megan Boone of "The Blacklist"

My favourite part right here: "Is your character going to get out into the field and kick some ass?

Yeah, I’m training right now in Krav Maga. I would like my character, who is now very much a rookie, to evolve into a very strong, formidable hero and someone who can hold her own in a fight against really high level criminals. So I’m training myself and Elizabeth Keen will be training in the show. Then a few seasons in, there will be I think some more intricate fight scenes."

I just have one concern: a few seasons in she starts more intricate fight scenes? A few SEASONS in?

uncle111 said...

I'm starting to have a hard time keeping current with the shows now that they are back. I watched MAOS today and I thought the music sounded like Human Target at times, so I checked. Yep- Bear McCreary.

Page48 said...

Good ear, Uncle.

Bear McCreary has quite the stacked resume:

MAOS
"The Walking Dead"
"Defiance"
BSG and spinoff "Caprica"
"Human Target"
Sarah Connor Chronicles

...among others.

Page48 said...

"Covert Affairs" renewed for Season Five.

Variety needs to find a new picture, though.

Page48 said...

Not to be outdone, "Sleepy Hollow" is renewed for Season Two.

Page48 said...

I'm not a fan of anything she's done in the past, including last year's "Red Widow", but I'll be cheering for Melissa Rosenberg in her effort to bring a new CIA show to ABC.

Page48 said...

Here's a timely trailer release, in light of Tom Clancy's recent demise.

The new Captain Kirk is the new Jack Ryan in the latest installment in the Ryan franchise. Directed by and co-starring Kenneth Branagh (director of "Thor" and star of "Wallander").

Chris Pine as Jack Ryan works for me. Should be fun.

Page48 said...

Uncle, here's a video blog with Bear McCreary talking about his work on MAOS.

Also has extensive links in his blog to many, if not all, of his other TV projects, including "Human Target".

Page48 said...

Agent Sarah Walker gets down to biz in "I, Frankenstein", along with the always great Bill Nighy.

Looks kinda fun, but I'm pretty sure it's not based on a true story.

uncle111 said...

Three episodes in and I'm liking The Blacklist.

uncle111 said...

Oh, that was the 247th post. And yes, I still see a lot of 47s. There were some on The Blacklist and one in an old Andy Hardy movie last night. Most of them I can't remember any more because I see them so regularly.

Page48 said...

Uncle, I thought that "Sleepy Hollow", "The Blacklist" and MAOS all had solid episodes this week.

As much as I enjoy the whole Avengers thing, I really don't follow that Marvel universe carefully, but I gather that the 'kidnapped' scientist on last night's MAOS becomes a major Big Bad in the comics. Looks like we just witnessed his 'origin story' last night and I would expect him to play a larger role down the road.

POI finally got back on track last night with the big picture story moving forward a little. Those standalones are little frustrating when we get too many in a row. BTW, I can't watch Root go all evil genius without seeing Peyton in S5 of "Alias". Someday we're going to see Root bring down a helicopter.

I'm a little disappointed in what POI is doing with Sarah Shahi so far this season. We know Shaw has mad operative skills, but they're portraying her as a one-note trigger-happy sniper, which I don't believe does her justice based on how she was introduced to us last season. It's time to let her show off a little.

Page48 said...

ABC gives MAOS a full season.

Page48 said...

POI is not thriving in its new time slot, as noted in this article.

Highlight: Person of Interest isn't warming to the new timeslot as much as fans would like. A 2.0 rating and 11.65 million viewers were all Tuesday's episode was able to draw in. All three episodes this season have set series low ratings records, and while the audience low hasn't been broken just yet, with the way things are trending, that may happen next week. Tuesday's episode earned a 2.0 rating and 11.65 million viewers - a 0.1 ratings drop, and 700,000 viewer drop on last week.

Network tinkering is seldom a welcome event.

uncle111 said...

Page,

Time slot may have something to do with it, but I think the bigger problem is too many characters and story lines. What made POI great was the John and Finch's missions to save the victim/catch the bad guy with some help from 2 COPs, and the underlying mystery surrounding the machine. I don't think it's going to work to have this many regular characters in each episode. It dilutes the main dynamics.

Page48 said...

Uncle, I don't think POI has had a flashback this season, either, which contributed to previous seasons' storytelling and focused for the most part on Reese and Finch.

Fusco has been a cast-off so far this year (having not even been in last season's finale).

Shaw isn't doing anything that Reese couldn't do without her, which is disappointing, given that she was billed as basically a super agent. It's great to have a super agent on the team, but to have her doing nothing more than sharing duties with Reese makes her seem like nothing more than beautiful baggage.

I'm hoping that Root's breakout scene was a sign that more interesting episodes are soon to follow.

As far as too many storylines, I think the one I could most do without is the HR corruption angle, which seems to have little to do with a show about "The Machine". Of course, that would leave Fusco essentially on the sidelines, since it seems to be HIS storyline.

Here's hoping for some improvement, otherwise I expect to see more headlines like I saw last week in my local rag, which read "Losing Interest".

"The Blacklist" gets another "Alias" behind-the-scenes guy in J.R. Orci, consulting producer on tonight's eppie.

Page48 said...

Tonight's "The Blacklist". Joey's Pizza out, Nick's Pizza in.

Page48 said...

Is POI losing its way? I thought this week's episode was one of the poorest efforts of the series to date.

Out of character characters? How about Reese handing out guns to civilians so they can kill each other? Is that The Machine's new mission statement or has Reese gone rogue?

What's up with Shaw? She started out as a badass operative and now she's the comic relief?

What's up with Bear? I love Bear as much as the next guy, but are they trying to work him into every scene now?

Root broke out of a mental institution last week and doesn't get a mention this week?

We're 4 episodes into S3 and they've slowed the story-telling pace to a crawl. The last 2 cases of the week have been very unsympathetic and, if memory serves, the ONLY interesting tidbit that we got out of last night's episode is that Carter's new partner is an HR stooge.

If the writers have a story to tell, I wish they'd get on with it.

Page48 said...

From IO9.com: "Agents of SHIELD is feeling more like Alias... thank goodness"

As they note, it was written by an "Alias" writer, so why not?

I also tend to agree that this was the best episode so far.

Good catch on Nick's Pizza!

"Covert Affairs":

I thought it was a great CA episode. I hope they keep it up!

And I hope POI finds their season 3 legs...soon!

Page48 said...

Uncle, CA was excellent. Annie's kicking butt and taking names.

POI bigwigs are promising to get off the stick eventually. I'm just not sure what they're waiting for.

It took "Fringe" a season and a half to adopt a more serialized approach, but POI is already in S3 and the team is out rescuing morally reprehensible 'numbers' instead of pursuing what should be a treasure trove of mythology.

Page48 said...

Now THAT was the POI I've been waiting for.

The new plan is 1.01 airs on Nov. 17th following a football game on FOX (gimme a break, football games ALWAYS run over their allotted time) and 1.02 airs in its regular time slot the following night.

Page48 said...

NBC's ill-advised black "Ironside" lasted for a grand total of 3 episodes this fall before being axed (and, by 'axed', I don't mean 'asked')

Having learned nothing from that exercise, NBC now wants to whip up a black "Murder She Wrote" .

Frankly, I don't care if the actors are black or not, but the days of "Ironside" and MSW are and should be long gone. TV has moved on in the last 15 years, though we do have a very successful "Murder, He Wrote" in the form of "Castle", which I never watch.

Reviving corpses like "Ironside" and MSW and hoping to cash in with black audiences is just NBC's way of throwing up their arms and saying "folks, we've got nothing".

Of course, NBC isn't the first outfit to learn this lesson the hard way. Remember USA's black "Kojak"? Of course you don't. I'll bet Ving Rhames doesn't even remember that, cuz it only lasted 9 episodes.

How long will it be before Bill Cosby comes back in a "Diagnosis Murder" reboot? Make it Morgan Freeman and I'm in.

Page48 said...

I would watch "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" anyway, but throw in a bunch of Black Widow, and there's no way I can resist.

Page48 said...

Q: When did "Alias" end?
A: 2006

Q: When did "Charmed" end?
A: 2006

Q: Which one is making a comeback?
A: "Charmed"

No word yet on whether the sisters will be all black this time around.

Now, in fairness, like the rumoured "Alias" reboot a few years ago, this one is not officially a go, but it would seem to be further along in the process, going so far as to order a script. Also notable is that a different network is involved with the reboot than with the original.

For the record, I was never a great fan of "Charmed" and only watched one or 2 episodes.

uncle111 said...

I never watched Charmed. How many storied can you do about a leprechaun with his cereal?

Page48 said...

Uncle, apparently the leprechaun was good for 179 episodes the first time around.

This pending revival is supposedly because of massive binge-watching of the original series on Netflix, a reaction that "Alias" didn't receive, apparently. Given a choice between the 2 series, I know where my binge-watching loyalties would lie.

Page48 said...

Time travelling, aboard the Wayback Machine.

Here, we are reminded that "Truth Be Told" was a "special premiere brought to you without commercial interruption by the new Nokia 3300 Series wireless phone".

And, should you opt to download and run the "heavy screensaver", ABC recommends a Pentium 3 with 256M of RAM. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

And, how about some vintage ABC "Alias" wallpaper?

Ahhhh, square wallpaper....those were the days.

Page48 said...

Agent Charlie Francis got written out pretty early in "Fringe", so it's nice to see Kirk Acevedo working for Bad Robot again in this week's POI.

uncle111 said...

Page,

I have had a lot of fun with the WB Machine over the years. It's also fun to go back and see what my websites looked like in the early days.

Page48 said...

Jennifer Lawrence took time off of making movies with Bradley Cooper long enough to appear in these 2 affairs:

1) "X-Men: Days of Future Past" trailer
looks pretty cool. Good to see the first gen X-Men back on screen.

2) "Hunger Games: Catching Fire" also looks pretty cool.

JL is having the kind of career that I hoped JG might have had post "Alias".

Page48 said...

This interview has first clip that I've seen of Zachary Levi in "Thor: The Dark World".

Judging from his 'moves', I think he must have The Intersect working for him.

uncle111 said...

Funny you should bring him up. I just started rewatching Chuck 2 nights ago. I just watched the clip you posted. Looks like a fun movie.

Page48 said...

Uncle, after "Chuck" ended, I re-watched the pilot because I remembered it being top notch as pilots go. Hard to imagine where the time goes.

I noticed 'Morgan' guesting on "Castle" last week. Not that I watch "Castle", but I couldn't help but notice the commercials.

I'm looking forward to Casey's new show, "The Last Ship", although it doesn't debut until next summer.

Page48 said...

Guess I wasn't paying attention, cuz I just noticed that "Sleepy Hollow" is only running for 13 episodes in each of the first 2 seasons.

Seems, though, that John Noble will be part of both seasons. Would be nice to see him upgraded to regular cast-member status next season.

Page48 said...

Tonight's "The Blacklist" focuses on #47 on the blacklist and the episode is written by J.R. Orci and marks his first writing credit since S4 of "Fringe".

SRM said...

Did you guys see Chuck is now on Netflix? I'm still pissed at how it ended... >:(

Page48 said...

SRM, wait for the movie to sort it all out(insert hope here).

Actually, I fully expect ZL to pull a movie together. He seems to be highly motivated. Kind of refreshing to see someone who doesn't want to distance themselves from the role that made their career. You see the same sort of thing with the cast of "Firefly". Unlike "Alias", where it's "we told our story, END of story".

Page48 said...

2 weeks from today is "The Day of The Doctor".

Looks like Rose Tyler (I like Rose way better than Clara) is back in Bad Wolf form.

When I started watching my Chuck DVDs again last week I thought it had to have been 3years since I finished watching them the last time. I had NO idea that Chuck ended in 2012!! It just can't be that short of a time since it aired...and since I watched it!!! I must have really been distracted by life this past year...or else my sense of time is degrading.

BTW, Dixon is the current bad guy.

Page48 said...

Uncle, that 2008 eppie of "Chuck" is the last time I've seen Dixon on anything, although I know he has appeared in a few episodes of "Southland", and has voiced a few animated things.

His latest effort is a low budget, Kickstarter funded web-series called "Hope: The Last Paladin", or as I like to call it, "WTF Am I Doing in a Web Series That Raised $7,000 on Kickstarter?".

Page48 said...

He was the last person to write an episode of "Alias" (and he's also written for some of my other faves including "Lost", "Angel", and BtVS). Now, Drew Goddard is ready to tackle the upcoming Netflix version of "Daredevil". Netflix is also planning on rolling out 3 other Marvel shows. Are we headed for Marvel overload? I think it's possible we are.

Speaking of Marvel, tonight's MAOS is written by the team of Rafe Judkins and Lauren LeFranc, familiar to us mostly due to their considerable contribution to "Chuck". They did also write 2 episodes of "My Own Worst Enemy", co-starring Saffron Burrows, who just happens to be guesting on tonight's MAOS. Small world or what??

Page48 said...

W13's 'Claudia' dropped by "Person of Interest" for one episode last season and now 'Artie' will swing by for a multiple episode arc later this season. He'll be playing a guy named Arthur. Shouldn't be much of a stretch.

Page48 said...

How would you like to go from writing shows like "Alias" and "Fringe" to a show based on the Patrick Swayze/Demi Moore movie, "Ghost"?

Just sounds like an awful idea to me.

Page48 said...

Been wondering how John Hurt became "The Doctor" (as we learned earlier this season)?

Wonder no more, as the Beeb gets all fired up for the Nov. 23rd 50th Anniversary show ("The Day of the Doctor") with a prequel 'minisode' ("The Night of the Doctor"), accompanied here by a great analysis of the nearly 7 minute video, featuring the 8th Doctor.

Page48 said...

Another great "Covert Affairs" this week. It seems like only yesterday that Annie wasn't even allowed to carry a gun, but just look at her now, all hangin' out of SUV's and stuff.

uncle111 said...

I officially now score CA as a top notch spy series!! VERY well done!

And I am liking Chi McBride on 5-0!

Page48 said...

Uncle, are you ready for a tie-in between CA and Chi McBride? This week's CA was co-written by Zak Schwartz, who was on the writing staff for "Human Target".

Doesn't mean a thing. Just puttin' it out there.

Page48 said...

Re: CA, I wonder if this is the show that the creators imagined from the beginning. If so, I wonder what took so long for them to get it going in the right direction. Was there a team meeting at some point resulting in a course correction? It could easily have been cut after those first couple of seasons and not had the chance to become what it is today.

Now, Sunday night at 8:00 p.m. (of following some football game), FOX finally unveils JJ's "Almost Human", with a 2nd episode on Monday night. I WANT this show to be good. Please be good!

Page48 said...

Here's an opinion piece ranking JJ's shows from worst to first. Gotta say, I don't know how anyone can rate "Felicity" ahead of "Alias". That does not compute.

Page48 said...

How many shows get (at least) 3 series finales? Well, I only know of one.

"The Killing" had it's first series finale after S2. Then, it had its 2nd series finale after S3, having received an off-season stay of execution by AMC. Now, TK is moving to Netflix for a 4th and "final" 6-episode season, and therefore a (possibly unprecedented) 3rd series finale in 4 years.

Guys like Netflix and Amazon are the changing face of TV, no longer just making conventional TV available for streaming on their services, but now producing their own material. Recognizing that fans aren't finished with shows like "The Killing" and "Arrested Development" should give us all hope when great shows are cancelled for reasons that make sense to mainstream networks, but not to us viewers. That doesn't mean that every show we love will be saved by finding a new home on Netflix, but I like the signal these guys are sending.

Page48 said...

Well, I'm giving the "Almost Human" pilot (Bad Robot doesn't name its pilots anymore?) 2 thumbs up. I know JJ keeps banging on about avoiding serialization, just like he did with "Fringe", but I hope that we soon find out that it's just more noise and we eventually head down the rabbit hole (where a series like this belongs).

Page48 said...

They had me at "Alias meets Homeland".

Page48 said...

Now that "Sleepy Hollow" is a runaway success, whazzzup next of Kurtzman/Orci?

Funny you should ask. How about a show on the CW about "a young Brooklynite who is recruited by the CIA to infiltrate her recently discovered biological family, a wealthy and powerful Texas dynasty suspected of having criminal alliances across the globe"?

Of course they have any number of other irons in the fire, but that one sounds like my cuppa.

Page48 said...

Good news for Bad Robotians, Mia Maestro and Carlton Cuse. "The Strain" has begun filming in Toronto. FX has ordered 13 episodes and the series will debut next summer.

uncle111 said...

poi SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WHAT A SHOCKER!!!!!

HERE IS AN ARTICLE - http://insidetv.ew.com/2013/11/20/person-interest-jonathan-nolan-greg-plageman-carter-death/

Page48 said...

Uncle, they warned us that someone big would die, but they played us with all the promos indicating that it was Fusco who was doomed. We should have seen it coming, though, when the last episode showed Carter and her ex reconciling so as to provide a home for their son.

It's not like Bad Robot to kill a major character in mid-flight (try telling that to Francie, although one could argue that she wasn't a 'major' player). Nora bit the dust in "Revolution" as well, so maybe the Robot is developing a ruthless streak.

This alleviates some of the problem you brought up a couple of weeks ago about the cast getting a little bloated. It also should spell an end to the HR storyline, which will hopefully allow a little more sci-fi to creep back into the show.

I guess the moral of the story is that when you start loading up on "Alias" chicks, somebody's gotta go, but as the interview says, she'll live on via the Flashback Machine.

Page48 said...

Another article about the 2 terrorism/spy-chick shows lining up on the CW.

Not much new content here except for the writer's plea at the bottom for the real "Sidney Britsow" (spelling notwithstanding) to return in an actual "Alias" reboot. Kudos to the writer for including the raucous Sydney Bristow highlight reel. Those were the freaking days.

Page48 said...

New trailer for Sawyer's "Intelligence".

Page48 said...

Uncle, apparently you're a man of some influence. Chi McBride is promoted to series regular on H50.

Page48 said...

Final 6 eppies of "Nikita" kick off tomorrow night.

And, while "Nikita" gets a super-short season, POI has just been granted a 23rd episode for the current season.

uncle111 said...

Page,

Thanks for the heads up on Nikita. And I'd be in for a 30 epi POI season :)

And on Chi, I could see that one coming, especially after this weeks show.

Page48 said...

"Covert Affairs" closed S4 out it fine form. That gorgeous closing scene on the boat, played out to Moby's "Almost Home" would have worked beautifully as a series wrap, but hopefully CA will hang around at least as long as "Burn Notice" did.

uncle111 said...

AMEN!!!

Page48 said...

End-of-season interview with the CA brain trust.

SRM said...

Still crossing my fingers CA will come to Netflix like other USA shows (Burn Notice, White Collar, etc).

Page48 said...

SRM, I read a blogger's review of the S4 finale, in which she described a point in S3 where CA "began the process of ditching the Barbie Dream Spyplane and sort of rebranding Covert Affairs as a serious business drama".

That's not a bad way of describing the transition. Obviously, at some point the PTB decided to ditch Annie's sister and all the phony pretense around that situation and turn Agent Walker (not Chuck's Agent Walker) into the spy we wanted her to be from the git go. I'm just sorry that the writers burned off a couple of seasons before getting around to it.

And, I sure wish "Alias" had had the travel allowance that CA seems to have. When Annie goes to Hong Kong, she really goes to Hong Kong.

Page48 said...

Q: What day is it?
A: "The Day of the Doctor"

I hope it's as awesome as a 50th Anniversary DW should be.

And, how about the "global simulcast" at 2:50pm Eastern? I definitely won't be seeing that, but hopefully later tonight.

Page48 said...

A quick check of Moby's video for "Almost Home" shows a number of comments from people drawn to it by "Covert Affairs".

Of course, Moby has previous spy soundtrack experience on his resume that I'm sure we're all very familiar with.

Page48 said...

POI: I want to see Root bring down a helicopter, just like the old days....only this time for the good guys.

Page48 said...

Season 3 of "Sherlock" now confirmed to get under way January 19th on PBS.

Page48 said...

Stumbled upon a 10th Anniversary "Alias" blog post by someone who sounds like she should have been haunting the hallowed halls of LTA back in our glory days. See if you agree with her Top Five episodes. I'll have to give that one some thought, but obviously TBT and "Phase One" have to OWN 2 of those 5 spots on anyone's list.

Great to see "Alias" passion out there in the blogosphere.

uncle111 said...

Page,

The words, "a 10th Anniversary "Alias"
makes my mind almost collapse to think it has been anywhere near that long.

Page48 said...

Uncle, no kidding! Except now it's already 12+ years, soon to be 20, then 30. It's crazy.

Page48 said...

Just finished my rewatch of "The Day of The Doctor", this time on my laptop with earbuds inserted (the best way to watch TV, IMO). There's just no way to absorb a show like that the first time around. I thought it was brilliant.

For 2 weeks leading up to the 50th Anniversary show, our Canuck version of Syfy was revisiting vintage Doctors and showing old DW episodes, and OMG, there is just no way the pre-2005 DW was even watchable, let alone the exceptional TV that the rebooted DW is.

It was great to see David Tennant and Billie Piper again (even if she wasn't the real Rose Tyler), and I'm really gonna miss Matt Smith, who only has 1 episode to go (Christmas Day).

Page48 said...

Did "Nikita" just take a run at the whole Evil Francie doppelganger thing? Hells yeah, I think it did!

Page48 said...

Well, I never thought I would do it, but, in light of all of the glowing reviews, I recently decided that I had to binge-watch 62 episodes of "Breaking Bad". Having concluded said binge-watch, I now even know what breaking bad means.

My take on the show? As advertised, BB is a great series. First and foremost, for those of us who love serial story telling, BB is one 62 episode story. There are no frustrating standalone stretches like we see on POI or the first 1.5 seasons of "Fringe". That's one of the beauties of cable TV.

What I didn't realize about BB is that there is a lot of humour throughout the series, especially in the first 3 seasons, and that is what really makes the subject matter much more palatable than I thought it would be. During the last season and a half, the humour diminishes considerably, as Walter's world begins to crumble around him and catastrophic events begin to unfold. However, by that time, I was sufficiently invested in the characters and the story, that there was no way I was going to turn away.

BB is a story about a man who, upon receiving a lung cancer diagnosis, begins to live without the fear that held him in check for the first 50 years of his life. His initial attempts to simply raise enough cash to provide for his family after his death soon spiral out of control as he enters remission and Walter's skill as a chemist and master manipulator take him on a perilous journey that can't possibly end well and doesn't.

BB is well written and well acted. It's a series that actually manages at times to have you cheering for the wrong people. It's definitely not an inspirational series in the sense that there is no (surviving) hero to step up and make everything right, but it is a series that draws you in and makes you care about the players and their ultimate fates.

Page48 said...

Tonight's "The Good Wife" reunites "Alias" S3 players 'Lauren Reed' and 'Robert Lindsey', and throws in Walter Bishop for good measure.

Unfortunately it doesn't measure up to either "Alias" or "Fringe". But still.

SRM said...

The one eppy that's lacking in her list imo is S3.11 "Full Disclosure." I'll never forget how my jaw dropped when I saw who shot Lazarey.

I agree "Day of the Doctor" was brilliant, one of the few times a much-anticipated show lived up to the hype.

Page48 said...

SRM, it's near impossible to narrow down a best-of list of "Alias" eppies to a mere 5.

Awesome news re: "Sleepy Hollow". Orci/Kurtzman are dipping into the Bad Robot pool again. This time Victor Garber is hired to play Ichabod's daddy. Papa Crane, as it were. Jack Bristow and Walter Bishop so far. Who else could they invite to that party? Don't tell me they wouldn't offer Jen a role if she would just pick up the phone.

Page48 said...

It just occurs to me. VG as Ichabod's Dad can only mean one thing....English accent.

uncle111 said...

And snooty attitude.

I watched my first Almost Human today. Not bad.

Page48 said...

Uncle, unfortunately, AH is only 3.5 episodes in and FOX is already showing episodes out of order. WTF? Seriously, is that necessary? So far, not a whiff of serialization, which I guess explains why they can show eppies out of order.

Can you imagine if ABC decided to show "So It Begins" as the 4th episode of "Alias"?

Page48 said...

Clearly I live in a bubble, cuz I had no idea who Paul Walker was until he died. Same with Cory Monteith. Is it because I don't watch "Entertainment Tonight" or something?

uncle111 said...

Page,

Probably, because I didn't know them and I don't watch those things either.

Page48 said...

Uncle, good to know. I thought maybe it was just me.

In other business, given the number of TV networks who now (annoyingly) paste their logos bottom right of the screen, why do so many shows run their opening credits bottom right where they are certain to be hidden behind the logo? Call me OCD, but I like to see who wrote pretty much every episode I watch sooooooo could you kindly run the credits where I can see them?

Page48 said...

"The Blacklist" mid-season finale (co-written by JR Orci) was what I like to call excellent. This is a show that could really amount to something. And, I'm really liking Lizzie.

Pity we now have to wait till January 13th for the next episode.

Page48 said...

I'm watching an episode of "One Day at a Time" from April 5, 1981, starring, among others, Ron Rifkin.

He barely looks or sounds like Arvin Sloane. It's crazy time capsule material.

uncle111 said...

I've gotten behind on BL. Sounds like I need to catch up.

Page48 said...

Uncle, of course everyone makes a special effort for the mid-season finale (something we never heard about until a couple years ago).

"The Blacklist" was a 2-parter. I'd like to see them keep that pace all season.

Speaking of mid-season finales, "The Walking Dead" this week??? Land sakes alive!

Page48 said...

"The Blacklist" renewed for a 2nd season. Turns out that it is NBC's "most-watched new drama eight weeks into its run in 19 years (since “Earth 2” in 1994)".

Page48 said...

"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" trailer, in which Spidey gets handed off to the "Alias" writing trio of Orci/Kurtzman/Pinkner.

SRM said...

The visuals look amazing, I just hope it also has a decent plot like the first movie. I do like that his gf already knows he's Spidey.

Page48 said...

SRM, it does look pretty stunning visually. Must be noted that the "Alias" trio are also on the payroll for the next Spidey installment in 2016.

uncle111 said...

Has anyone noticed that they are using Alias type doubling technology on Nikita?

Page48 said...

Uncle, I did notice that. I posted some nonsense about that on Roco's blog last week.

Turns out, my worries about Birkhoff were off the mark.

uncle111 said...

Page,

I was worried about him being a double, too.

Page48 said...

BBC rocking a new "Sherlock" trailer.

Page48 said...

First look at Denzel as Robert McCall in 2014's "The Equalizer".

The first case McCall takes on (in what may become a movie franchise) will be that of a teen prostitute (presumably in big trouble) played by Chloe Moretz (aka Hit Girl).

From what I've seen, Hit Girl can handle herself without any help from Denzel.

Page48 said...

"Revolution" has a history of naming characters mined from Bad Robot's history. Recently announced is a multiple episode arc featuring a character to be known as Peter Garner.

Previous names already used or in use include Jack, Victor, McCoy, Marcus, Dixon, Rachel, Charlie, Michael. You get the picture.

Page48 said...

Tom Cruise just keeps getting good roles. "Edge of Tomorrow" sounds like something that's been done many times, many ways, but I'm still in. And, of course, Emily Blunt doesn't hurt, either.

Page48 said...

New promo for JJ's "Believe". Still don't think there is a date set for the debut.

Could this be better than "Almost Human"? Well, right now, I'm a little frustrated with AH for firing off standalone after standalone (and out of order at that). That seriously needs to change. Mind you, "Fringe" did that for almost 30 episodes before smartening up.

Page48 said...

I just noticed that the best pilot ever (BPE) is available in its entirety on Youtube.

I can't believe it hasn't been taken down.

Page48 said...

"Alias" writers are up to their eyeballs in the expanding Spideyman franchise, with news that spinoffs will include "Venom" and "Sinister Six".

While it's good to see these guys working together, I would prefer to see them writing for original characters rather than spending so much time squeezing every last drop out of the superhero genre. Superhero movies are great, but, IMO they will always take a back seat to a well written 'ordinary person doing extraordinary things' type of character. Like Sydney Bristow, for instance (a name that just came to me off the top of my head).

Page48 said...

If you're looking for Sarah Connor, "Game of Thrones" has 2 of them now. Lena Headey and, now, Emilia Clarke.

Page48 said...

A question on the minds of all Bad Robot followers.

Page48 said...

Say it ain't so, BC.

Page48 said...

Just a week to go before we say farewell to Matt Smith's version of "The Doctor".

There's no doubt that his first season was my favourite of his tenure. The final 2 episodes of the season ("The Pandorica Opens" and "The Big Bang") were brilliant and this was one of my favourite scenes between The Doctor and 'the girl who waited'.

And, how about 2 brilliant scenes from the same episode? "Something old, something new, something borrowed, something BLUE"

It's gonna be tough saying goodbye.

Page48 said...

Trailer for "The Time of The Doctor", featuring Walter Bishop's wifey (aka the always cool Orla Brady).

Page48 said...

Just finished the 10 episode British series, "The Tunnel", based on the Danish/Swedish series (translated "The Bridge" which is also the basis for the American series, "The Bridge", which I have not seen).

The British version stars Stephen Dillane (you may know him as Melissa George's bossman in "Hunted" or Stannis Baratheon from "Game of Thrones") and Clemence Poesy. I particularly like her performance as a French cop with what I assume is Aspergers. Good series, which I hope will return for a second season, although it's hard to imagine how Dillane returns or how he and Poesy end up working together again.

Page48 said...

spoilertv.com is asking readers to submit "memorable scenes from past shows".

I submitted 2 scenes, using my archived comments from LTA. 1) Sydney reading in Dixon in "Phase One". This scene was actually mentioned in one of the comments in this article. 2) The final scene in TBT (cemetery, Vertical Horizon...you know the one). I could have submitted a dozen others but didn't.

uncle111 said...

Page,

So you'll know, I reading, but I'm working 80 hour weeks right now, so I don't have time to reply often.

Page48 said...

Uncle, I think that's what the Beatles meant by "Eight Days a Week".

Speaking of 8, here's a little something to make us all feel older. It was 8 years ago earlier this week that Sydney found herself stranded aboard Athena. I can't freaking believe that it's been 8 years.

Page48 said...

Trailer for "Transcendence".

I'm definitely up for some of that.

Page48 said...

Charlie Jane Anders was more than a little impressed with last night's "Nikita".

Only 1 episode left, with the excellent title, "Canceled".

uncle111 said...

I'm watching a season 4 episode of Chuck and Timothy Dalton just mentions a specific episode of Alias, and then says, "I loved that show!"

SRM said...

Hehe I remember that Uncle. :)

Sad about BC, though it confuses me that said he got "less" screen time in season 2. He seemed to have gotten more as a CIA consultant, Francie's bf and framed double. At any rate, good for him getting himself clean.

Page48 said...

Take two Doctors and call me in the morning.

SRM said...

They are so damn cute. :)

Page48 said...

Matt Smith bows out of DW after........47 episodes. Hmmmmmm!!

Page48 said...

"Sherlock"...he's coming back.

A little 7 minute prequel to Sherlock's imminent return.

Page48 said...

"Raggedy Man, Goodnight"

Now, the pressure is on Peter Capaldi. Big shoes to fill.

Page48 said...

I'm watching a Hallmark movie called "The Hunters".

The only reason I'm watching is because it stars VG as a baddie. He gave me an "Alias" flashback thrill when he issued the instructions "wheels up in 30 minutes". There is also a parking garage brawl a la "Truth Be Told".

All of that said, it's not much of a movie.

Page48 said...

"The Americans" returns for S2 on Wednesday, Feb. 26th, almost a month later than its series debut. Better late than never, I guess.

Page48 said...

"Nikita" goes out as strong as it could have hoped to, IMO.

uncle111 said...

OK, I'm going to have to watch it again when I'm more rested. It was a LOT of info and action.

Oh, have I ever mention...I HATE ENDINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe they could do a Nikita version of POI where she and Micheal take down bad guys and help average people as they enjoy their "retirement."

Page48 said...

Uncle, I hate endings too. I've come to reluctantly accept that any ending which isn't totally botched is well on the way to being a good ending.

I really felt that the Amanda storyline needed to be wound down long ago to allow the show to grow, but then who would that leave as the Big Bad? Most shows have a BB for each season, while "Nikita" had Percy for 2 and Amanda for the entire series.

The finale left all core players alive and true to their real character (no Irina Derevko-like meltdown), so didn't leave viewers saying "there's no way she would have acted like that". No one suffered catastrophic Agent Sarah Walker-like memory loss.

Basically, the finale just gave Team Nikki their pardons and put Amanda on ice, leaving nothing much else to do.

If I had one nit-pick, it would go back to the last episode when Ryan had a choice to end Amanda and didn't take it and wound up ending himself instead. On the other hand, where's the fun in that?

It's been quite a year. The end of "Fringe", the end of "Burn Notice", the end of the Eleventh (13th?) Doctor and the end of "Nikita". As the Stones would say, "Time Waits for No One". Who would know better than them?

uncle111 said...

Wow! Time is a weird thing. Has it only been a year since Fringe ended? And Chuck. I mentioned before that I have started rewatching the series (on the final season now) and I couldn't believe it till I saw on IMDB that it ended in 2012. I watched the whole series again soon after it ended and I would have sworn that had been at least 4 years!

Page48 said...

I'll be keeping an eye on the "Nikita" castoff show, "12 Monkeys", coming up on Syfy (or whoever carries it here).

"12 Monkeys" is a new home for Nikki's 'Birkhoff' and 'Ryan' as well as a couple of "Nikita" writers.

Also on board (at least for the pilot) is Kirk Acevedo of "Fringe" fame.

Page48 said...

A couple of Charlie Jane Anders articles from io9.com.

One about the "Nikita" finale, and one about the end of the Matt Smith era on DW.

Page48 said...

Christmas holidays are truly the most brutal time of the year for anyone who owns a TV.

At least tomorrow there's a Nicolas Cage-a-thon, but tonight, I'm down to Mia Maestro's "Poseidon", which I've already seen. It also has the submarine captain from "Last Resort" and the wife from "Zero Hour". I can't believe it's already been 7 years since this one came out.

Page48 said...

Well, it's almost as if ABC wants their new spy mini-series, "The Assets", to be a secret. It debuts on Jan. 2nd at 10:00 p.m., but I've yet to see a single promo for it and you have to turn to ABCNnews.com to find a sneak peek.

It has a couple of things going against it, IMO. First, it's a period piece (although it works well for "The Americans") and it's also based on a real story. Personally, I prefer great fiction.

Still, it is an 8 part mini-series, so it won't require a major investment. It stars the grieving Mom from "Broadchurch" if you happened to catch that on BBC America.

uncle111 said...

I've been a little out of touch. I'll have to take a look at some of these links and get caught up on the links from our ever informed Page 48:)

If I don't get back before then,"Happy New Year!!"

Page48 said...

Now that "Sherlock" 3.01 has aired on the Beeb, can I avoid spoilers for darned near 3 weeks until PBS joins the party? Hmmmm, probably not.

With this comment, I have now posted in 9 different calendar years. What??? I can't even believe that.

Happy New Year, indeed. It will be over in the blink of an eye.

uncle111 said...

Looking forward to getting caught up on a few things, and I'll see if I can find Sherlock online.

I thought this about a reboot of Jack Ryan was interesting - http://americanfilm.afi.com/issue/2014/1/cover-story#.UsT90-KYyB5

SRM said...

FYI iTunes is supposed to have "The Empty Hearse" available for download on Jan. 9, a full 10 days before it airs on PBS. Hopefully we can all manage to avoid spoilers for at least the next 7 days. Happy new year all! :)

Page48 said...

Uncle, I'm looking forward to the Jack Ryan reboot. I linked to a trailer a few months ago, but there was a shorter clip released about a month ago.

"Sherlock" is available on BBC's iPlayer for anyone who wants to fudge their IP address. I'm not above doing that in a desperate situation.

uncle111 said...

I'm watching Sherlock right now.

#ENVIOUS no spoilers please!! ;-)

Page48 said...

Uncle, have you watched the previous 2 seasons (if we're calling 3 eppies a season) of "Sherlock"? Just wondering.

uncle111 said...

Page,

Yes, I have, and I am about 1/2 through with this episode. I usually have to watch them more than once if I want to catch everything. They are pretty fast with his thought process. Hard to keep up!

3 episodes every year or so is ridiculous, no matter how jam packed they are.

Page48 said...

Uncle, I think that if they are only doing 3 eppie seasons, I might (emphasis on 'might') prefer that they showed 1 every 4 months so that the intervals between seasons would be much shorter.

As it is, this current episode follows the previous installment by 2 full years, although to their credit, the story also picks up 2 years later.

Either way, with Benedict Cumberbatch's career on fire right now, it's a wonder he has time for "Sherlock" at all.

I also watch "Wallander", which follows the same pattern, three 90 minute episodes in 3 weeks, then nothing for 2 years until another 3 episodes are released.

uncle111 said...

Page,

I think I would prefer 6 45min episodes, 1 every 2 weeks.

Page48 said...

Remember this?

Apparently, it's a go. Hopefully, it will have more spunk than MAOS, which so far has been pretty underwhelming.

Page48 said...

It's only been 30 minutes but I'm bored silly with "The Assets". I was afraid that would be the case.

Page48 said...

In keeping with the current tradition, the first 15 minutes of Syfy's upcoming "Helix" is now available everywhere online. Looks decent enough for me to check out the pilot on January 10.

Page48 said...

Taken together, all versions of "Law & Order" currently total 1,027.

Seriously! That's like "Alias" x 10. Can you imagine 5 different versions of "Alias" with 200 episodes each? I don't get the appeal.
