Full Circle Finale

It is the end- but today is still Alias Day! My spirits are surprisingly high and that is because FINALLY we get the answers! FINALLY!

Like I mentioned in Wednesday's recap- we are back where we started- Sydney is determined to bring Sloane down and to finally live in peace and happiness with the people she loves. This determination, however, may cost others their lives. Sloane is just as determined, if not more so, to see Rambaldi's true work come to life. His entire life has been centered on the prophet since his days in the Army Corp of Engineers, and all his life's work will come down to a face off with Sydney Bristow- a woman at the center of Rambaldi's prophecy. Sydney is the Chosen One- and I believe she is the only one who can stop Sloane and save the world from "utter desolation."How she will stop him and who will be sacrificed is anyone's guess.

Sloane left Sydney with a chilling phone call, much like he did in season 2 on Sydney's graduation day. He warned her not to come after him, knowing full well she would and he did it again. Why coax her if she is the one who can foil his plan? Is he drawing her in for a reason? How is Grace's connection to Korman and the Cardinal relevant to P5 and the endgame?

PS. This is the space to post all of your reactions to the finale. Once again, please keep it short and sweet. Enjoy!! And don't forget to read the tribute blog below!

I think Sloane believes that he can use or manipulate Syd in the end to work for and not against his plan. Sloane is so certain that he plays a role in Rambaldi's endgame and so certain he is right about what it entails. That certainty has made him make some very poor and arrogant choices and tonight I hope it comes back to haunt him!

I believe Sloane knows that he needs Sydney to fulfill Rambaldi's final endgame. Sloane thinks he is "Chosen", but knows she is "The Chosen One", and therefore placed the call to lure her to find him and try to force her to complete the prophecy. He didn't want Sydney to relax to much after he ran off, he needs her and knows how to get to her.

this day reminds me of when we watched the finale of the 1st season- we were moving across the country that weekend so we had a cake at our finale party that said "goodbye Lisa and Sydney." I think I'll make some Rambaldi symbol shaped cookies tonite. ha! do you guys remember where you were that first season ending, when they hit us with Vaughn getting swallowed up by the liquid from the ball, and Syd meeting her captor....saying, "mom?" our first season ending shocker! love it!

lhaaheim said...

I do remember it however I can't recall if I saw the first airing of it or not. It was around the time that I started watching Alias so it may have been my first episode though I'm not quite sure. Regardless I was quite struck by the finale even though I didn't know the depth of Vaughn and Syd's relationship at the time. They are always able to convey so much even in such a little amount of time. And my gosh when Syd said "Mom?” damn that was great!

I tend to feel really sorry for Sloane. The traggedy in his life beginning with the loss of Jaquelyn and his wife's rejection of his comforting efforts began him on the Rambaldi path out of curiosity, which led to obsession, which led to megalamania and now demintia as he halucinates his daughter by his side. Due to his obsession he put his wife in harms way and she was accedentally killed.Due to his obsession, his daughter was caught up in a mad-woman's desire for universal anarchy, and he had to personally put a bullet in her, and eventually see that she was put into an induced coma for an entire year. Due to his irrational obsession, he accedentally killed his long-lost daughter. The man simply cannot seem to help himself. He knows full well how his life has been spent in folly, but he labors on, being only propelled by having nothing left in his life upon which to focus. He has nothing left to live for, and his guilt is eating him alive and riving him further into madness. Death for Sloane is not justice, nor revenge; it would be the most humane thing that could happen to the poor wretch.

Robby- I love your summary of Sloane's demise, and I understand fully why you have sympathy for him despite everything. I too have grown to understand and appreciate Sloane over the years and would be sad if he died and agree that it would be the most humane thing to do for him since he will eventually ruin himself even more unless prevented.

However I refuse to feel sorry for him anymore, he has had more chances then he deserved to be loved and accepted, and not just by anyone but by the people he hurt and betrayed. Sloane with a sound mind gave up everything! Jack who has always been a great person to compare to Sloane has also had an unfortunate and difficult life but he never made the choices Sloane has. Sloane chose the life he has, Jack, Syd, and Vaughn etc. did not chose the sad and difficult life they have; and they need peace. Peace that I don't think will come without the death of Sloane. I wish Sloane could have been good but this final betrayal is just too much for me to sympathize with.

I whole-heartedly agree Lhaaheim!! Sloane has had plenty of chances to earn our pity. NO MORE! He has never cared about anyone but himself, and even if it seemed like he cared about Nadia and Sydney- it was all for his own benefit. Short live evil Sloane!

Robetron said...

LOL...

I am thus persuaded!

I guess I have felt the same way, but I kind-a wanted us to get away from "he's a dirty rat, and always has been" kind of thinking. I wanted to see him as a human being who made terrible decisions and terrible mistakes. Of course he deserves what he is about to get (in just over two hours!).

Y'all are cool!

Check the pics, she is making the same face- she's even wearing the same watch! Weird. So weird.

I agree that if justice is served, Sloane deserves the worst punishment possible without mercy or compassion. However, I also agree with Robby that he is tragic. That's part of what makes Alias so great - the complexity and depth of the characters, sometimes juxtaposed with the fantastical nature of the storyline. Sloane is not one-dimensional that's what makes us both hate and pity him at the same time, that's what enables him to manipulate Syd & the others into giving him another chance, it's what we see when we get a glimpse of his genuine care for Sydney and his genuine grief that Nadia is gone. Then in the next moment, we see his utter depravity of moral goodness when he chooses Rambaldi above honor, decency & most of all love. His actions make a mockery of any shred of decency or caring he may exhibit. It's what he could have been that makes him tragic. We see those glimpses, we see his talents and expertise, and on some level we realize just what he's given up to commit to "the dark side."

Kiki said...

WOW Mommer! Nice.

Robetron said...

I knew I had a fair point in there somewhere. Thanks Mommer.

lhaaheim said...

LOL! I leave the blog for a couple hours and a bunch happens!

Robby- You are right we should look at him as a human and not as a monster even though he is making evil monster choices. I'm mostly just pissed off at Sloane, I want him to leave everyone alone and that won't happen until he's in the ground and burning in you know where. Wow that was harsh! I don't usually say things like that! Anyway he's super evil and that’s what happens when you make those choices. Robby, I'm glad you posted your perspective though; it's always nice to see the other side and pre-Nadia’s death I felt as you do.

"It's what he could have been that makes him tragic."

That is so true mommer, the Sloane that could have been is the tragedy, yet he's not that Sloane anymore and even if he acts like it I'm sticking firm, no love for Sloane coming from me!!!

However knowing the writers if/when Sloane dies it’s going to be emotional, maybe I will be sad, I don’t know now I’m all conflicted! I’m okay with Alias ending, but I’m still in denial, I want to celebrate it yet it makes me want to cry, I’m pissed at Sloane but I wonder if he’s telling the truth and working for the greater good, I’m hoping BV is not dead and that Jack survives. Most of all I’m going to miss the speculation, the wonder and mystery; I so hope they give us some new questions at the end. Oh I will miss Vaughn too, he’s just too perfect! :-) My gosh Alias is less then 4 hours away!!!

I'm a little jumpy right now with less than an hour to go.

My brother has a baseball game and he's supposed to be home in time, but it's gone into extra innings... I need him and my mom to get home so I can pick up my friend to watch the finale. With only 33 minutes left, I'm feeling a little like Jack Bauer...

Hope you east coasters have fun! I'm going to spend the next two and half hours in denial and enjoy the lovely raining weather outside.

That is actually a protrait of Holly Marie Combs, she is my second favorite actress (next to Jen of course). But I am brown head and height about the same, though.

lhaaheim said...

Now why did they have to put Oprah’s legend show on before Alias? It’s so sweet and is making me cry. My gosh this night is going to be one big roller coaster.

34 minutes until Alias starts on the west coast!!!

Mike1978 said...

All I know is yes the episodes feel rushed because we want the show never to die! I will say I think it was a classic ending, because I have more questions than ever. I love it!!

uncle111 said...

You know, I wasn't surprised when Sloane revived. When I was playing 47_TheMan over on ABC and thinking about how I would have it end I saw very clearly in my mind Sloane, dead, suddenly opening his eyes and smiling. No joke!

Andrew said...

Wow!

SPOILER WARNING

I feel content, and pleased with... everything.

It's a shame Irina never gave up on her thirst for power. She had awesome grandmother material... yeah right. She was always my favorite character...

Next to Jack. Sweet to see a touching goodbye between father and daughter, once estranged. Awesome that he entombed Sloane and sacrificed himself for the sake of the world... and his daughter.

I so called little Jack's name before Sydney introduced him to his Uncle Dixon (glad he's good by the way). If Isabelle's smart, she'll keep quiet about that puzzle.

Why oh why did Sydney have that puzzle? Good memories?

Great to see Merrin Dungey as GOOD Francie for a brief moment.

I loved the closure without feeling "final." Not flashing "ALIAS" at the end was a nice way to say this is it, thanks for watching, but the story lives on.

Thanks for a wonderful 5 years, to the entire cast and crew. ABC tried to kill you, but you still went out with an amazing ending.

jenn256 said...

anyone else notice how symbolic that it all came to and end- her mom and the whole Rambaldi thing in Hong Kong- the same town she was in when she woke up and Vaughn told her she had been dead for 2 years and that he was married. Talk about a full circle moment! Her life ended in a way there, and now she can live with the man she loves after "bringing down the greatest power" there also.

Robetron said...

I taped 24 so I could watch Alias. How will I ever get over this conclusion to watch 24's?

Its too much.
UGH!

Andrew said...

Robby,
My original plan was to watch 24 tonight after ALIAS was done, but I don't want to now. I couldn't care less about Jack Bauer.

What an ending!

Did anyone catch when Dixon said the name of the Pilot episode in the final scene "Truth Be Told."?

That was a full circle moment for me.

I also enjoyed that Sloane is buried underneath a rock that has the <0> on it.

uncle111 said...

You know, all someone has to do is excavate the site and find Sloane and free him. Then we have a criminal Sloane who can't be killed--maybe.

Robetron said...

Sounds like the story for the big screen, Uncle

Mike1978 said...

Robby:
I watched the first hour of 24 and then switched to watching Alias (of course taping 24). So now I am too jumpy so I watched the 2nd part of 24 and wished I would of skipped it. All I can think about is Alias and my head is spinning!

lhaaheim said...

Just saw the preview clip, oh my it’s really ending! Oh the beginning! It’s so good! Starting in Sydney!!! LOL! That was great! Marshall! I thought he would be in there!!! Tom in Siberia too funny! Damn Syd is good! Um where is Rachel?

Amy said...

I ripped about 4 of my nails off while watching that incredible finale (a la Marshall, I guess ;))
It was amazing..after the recap tomorrow I think everything that's foggy right now will clear up.

lhaaheim said...

Does Sark come with the package? Oh yes he does! Marshall is kind of sexy when he’s all romantic! Damn that was cute! Vaughn is so funny “that would be you”. I love how certain he is about everything. I knew there would be a Bob and Lydia reunion!

lhaaheim said...

Marshall "you’re tasking me?" Wow that was great! Marshall is so hot in this episode! He's the new Vaughn!!! Oh and how he just "tolerated" Sloane. Damn Marshall is awesome!

Rachel is tough too! Oh and Nadia "take your pick", this show is full of great lines!

Um hello Tom you were already there last night! What the heck are you doing!?! Were you going to warn her!?!

Yup Jack, Dixon was always right! Oh Sloane better not touch Izzy!!! He’s playing with her! Oh my, he knows no boundaries!!!

They are using codes!!! Too cute and super smart! Sark and Sloane really should have seen through that! Happy the didn’t though!

I bet that’s Mt. Subasio!!! That would make a lot of sense. Eliminate them my ass!!! Ugh! Sloane is so evil! I mean could he be more evil???

lhaaheim said...

Take them all down? Wait not Sark! Leave one bad guy alive!!!

Oooh icy Mt. Subasio!!! My gosh the suspense is killing me! Oh yeah! Shoot him! Shoot him! Get Sloane! Idiot's all happy to see Syd! He so get's on my nerves!

Amy said...

Oh, did anyone catch the stunt choreographer in 2 scenes? Hes the guy that was on some special features in (at least) the s1 dvd.
The scenes he was in were: 1. Rachel and Marshall were held captive..I believe Rachel shot him (maybe Syd) and 2.Outside the cave with the Rambaldi sign..I believe he was shot in that scene also..just thought it was funny and a cute thing to do for the people involved in the creation of alias.

lisa said...

Hey, if anyone misses something on Alias, or wants to watch it again a million times without the rewind...

http://dynamic.abc.go.com/streaming/landing

It's Alias full eps, ONLINE! FREE!!!
THE WHOLE SEASON! Not without a few sponsers, though. But still, it's great to be able to watch it again! As soon as the series finale gets uploaded...

Oooh, I sound like an ad. I don't mean to. But I loved it when Jack...and Marshall...and I miss Tom already...and Sloane, that evil son of...

Still, I believe the series finale could've been somewhat better. But I missed a few non-crucial scenes, so I have have have to watch it again. Then again, there's Disney, so I don't know how much good stuff I missed...

::sniff::

I'll miss Sydney Ann Bristow.

lily'smom said...

I don't think I've ever been so sad at the ending of a show. I like how they tied it up at the end, Jack ever the hero. I think most questions were answered, the only glaring one that wasn't that I can think of was the whole Tom and the Cardinal story...unless I missed something? I love how Sloane was buried alive forever.

lhaaheim said...

After the last part that I wrote things got way too intense and I couldn't keep up even though I tried and did write a whole lot. It seemed fitting to delete it and write this instead. Irina really is evil and neither she nor BV could/would do any saving or good willing. It makes sense that he would be dead since she really is as mad as Sloane, though I wish he had not died. The song they played when Vaughn got to Syd, what song was that, was that the SD6 song? Jack saved them all and gave Sloane the death he deserved. Jack is an incredible man and I was so sad to see him go. It wasn’t fair! Robby was right death would be humane for Sloane and there is nothing better then wasting away through all the ages with no one. Not even a ghostly Nadia! Long live a trapped Sloane! At least Jack died knowing he would keep Sloane from Syd and that she could take care of the rest! Vaughn was a good man and let our business man Sark live. Uncle Dixon came to visit, Marshall and Carrie have lots of kids and Vaughn and Syd have a little baby boy named Jack. They live in an impossible place to find, right on the beach and Izzy is smart just like her momma! I knew the puzzle would show up again when Vaughn mentioned her toys! As Jack said in season two "the story rarely has an ending". Izzy will carry on the Spy legacy. And Liz who is crying severely hard is going to stop typing now and mourn the loss of a friend. Goodbye Alias!

PS. They said thanks instead of flashing an Alias; I would have liked to see the Alias flash again. Was there even a normal intro? I can’t remember. Wow the last hour and a half was really rushed. They needed more time, yet then it may not have been as good! No, they would have just had more good in it then! More answers instead of just situations that we can craft answers from. Stupid ABC! Okay back to crying.

PPS. Irina’s demise: never being there for Syd. She left and that allowed Sydney to become a great person and eventually help destroy her. Irina was so stupid; she left the most powerful weapon at her disposal, Sydney, in the hands of someone who loved and cared for her. Her Daddy Jack!

~ A very tearful Liz

lhaaheim said...

I love all your posts Uncle! I tried doing a little of that too but it just got too intense for me. I have a feeling I’m a bit too emotional for my own good. Shh! Don’t mention the obvious Uncle, the idea that all this could repeat again and someone could find Sloane and then Izzy would have to save the day! I want to revel in Jack’s victory over him! Plus Sark said something about it being very far down. Then again I doubt this Rambaldi stuff will end, there will always be another crazy person to follow him and another sexy business man to assist.

Me too Robby!!! *sob* This has been so emotional! *sob* I’m with you again Robby! Alias is not over! Let’s be in denial!!! I taped 24 too but I have no idea when I will watch it! This has all been too much lately, Grey’s, The West Wing, Veronica Mars, and I have to see Lost so 24 can wait till June. I’m in no hurry.

lhaaheim said...

Sark spin-off- Yes I said to my television several times, just shoot him, he’s no good, forget his hotness and charm!!! Yet as I said before Sark is a business man (I love that he said that!) and the fact that he is not evil saves him. Plus it’s kind of fun having him around! A Sark spin-off would be great! I loved Vaughn’s line though about it being a predicament. I’m actually surprised Vaughn let him go; I thought he would shoot him; Vaughn is such a good man for not doing so! Oh no we didn’t get a cute Vaughn and Jack moment, I so wanted that. Well Vaughn did say in the last eppy that he felt accepted by Jack. Dang it they just didn’t have enough time for everything. Again STUPID ABC!

Mike- I agree it was classic Alias and we do have a ton of questions. That was just a lot to take in, I almost feel like I did after I saw ROTK for the first time. When it comes to TV, I’m all about Alias but when it comes to a movie Lord of the Rings is heaven, except for the first viewing of ROTK, then its mad crazy emotional crying. Add the fact that I’m at home and am free to scream at the screen, jump and be as emotional as I want I just about reached LOTR heights when it came to tonight’s series finale. Oh my it’s over! No more ALIAS!!!!! AHHH! What are we going to do!?!

lhaaheim said...

That’s right Andrew ABC tried to kill them all along but they stuck with it and gave us an amazing five years!!! Nope I didn’t catch what Dixon said, too emotional then, but there were a lot of call backs and memory inducing moments. And a ton of things regarding the symbol, especially when Syd and Irina were lying on the roof, the horizon was in between them wasn’t it. I don’t think the prophecy was about just one woman, it could have been about both of them!!! The whole balance between good and evil thing!

Best thing about this eppy! Happy family together on the beach and my gosh this was a great eppy for Marshall (mostly the first half). They really gave Kevin’s character the time it needed! I just love Marshall! I wish they would have had time for Weiss to come back though, even if he is good and less exciting, which if he were bad it would be too much since Irina is evil. I really thought she was going to turn out at least a little good. I loved having Francie back though! That was great!

Lily’smom- I am thinking the same thing, um the Cardinal??? Did we miss something?

lhaaheim said...

Okay I'm bringing up LOTR again but I find it's comparison to Alias good at times. When I watched the theatrical versions of the movie I always felt like things were missing (btw- extended versions, much, much better). I feel like that now, like there are a bunch of really great and beautiful deleted scenes lying around. Do you think they might put some on the DVD or I don't know make an extended version of season 5; one that just gave us more content but didn't change the outcome?

lhaaheim said...

Why did Jack go down there? He must have believed in Rambaldi and knew Sloane would come back to life. Oh my, Jack was a non-evil Rambaldi believer! And why did it take Sloane shooting Jack for Syd to finally pull the trigger!!! Furthermore why did Sloane shoot Jack instead of Vaughn?

Is Tom evil or good, did he stay there to save them or did he feel guilty for helping P5 out. He was at Rachel's house the night they took her! Did he feel guilty over the death of his wife? Was there really more for his story but the writers just had to cut it short, could he have been Rachel's Vaughn, or was he going to die the whole time. Is Tom, Rachel's Danny in a lacking depth kind of way. Why did he want to talk to her, wouldn't that cause her more pain, always wondering what if, mourning what could have been? Oh yeah did I miss something about the Cardinal or something that would explain it? For example Bill Vaughn is truly dead since for him to be alive Irina would have to have been good but instead she is purely evil despite her I still love you crap. What explains the Cardinal, what explains Tom?

lhaaheim said...

Sorry for all the posts, but this is the end and I can't help myself! My eyes are so tired from crying that I can’t cry anymore! I love this show too much! *mental note: don’t get this attached to a TV show again*.

Final thoughts: Marshall is sexy! Vaughn will forever be Vaughn, his name itself defines him and he needs no descriptions. Jack is the best father ever and I’m so happy he was victorious over Sloane! I hope Sloane stays in that tomb forever until he eventually joins Irina in hell. On the other hand I do enjoy the thought of Sark running around causing mischief. I wish I had an Uncle Dixon and an Uncle Will. And I hope Izzy listens to her parents and quits her bank job before it's too late. Then again she might miss her chance to meet her very own Vaughn, and become strong for the battle ahead. I hope she watches over her baby brother and helps him live up to his name. Finally may all those dead and good in the world of Alias rest in peace.

We have all been blessed to be people who care beyond normal means, Alias is just a television program, but it became so much more for some of us, we need to take the love we have for Alias and use it for something beyond the TV and computer screen. I say we start a ‘in the name of Alias movement’. Even though most of us probably perform acts of kindness everyday and are actively involved in our communities, this would be a great way to unify our efforts and give support to one another.

~ Liz (who is listening to “Ooh Child” by Beth Orton to try and cheer up.) Dang it! It’s not working! Here come the waterworks! Please share if you know of a great cheering up method.
