Scene Cap of the Day

"So, I guess we know the answer to the intimacy question."

What an important moment! What an important episode! Not only do we learn of Sydney's true love for Vaughn in this episode, but it's our first tip that Michael Vaughn may not be who he says he is.

Mr. Yager is investigating Vaughn for unauthorized trips and suspicious contact with enemies of the United States. He asks Sydney to tap Vaughn's computer and download all the information she can. Sydney refuses and proves her loyalty for Vaughn...sort of. She follows him to a bar (good song playing, Lucinda Williams "Righteously") where she witnesses him purchase information from an ex-KGB assassin. Vaughn explains that he has been researching Irina and her activity. He has come up with nothing. Vaughn is cleared and he and Sydney agree- no more secrets. HA!

Going back to this episode with hindsight, it's interesting to watch Vaughn's behavior and his facial expressions when Sydney asks him if he is hiding something. He says he's not comfortable telling her all his secrets, as they have just started dating- but as Sydney says later, "Who do you think you work for?" In my mind, I like to think there is a connection between this instance of Vaughn's betrayal and his research with Renee. It would have made sense to me, as a writer, to draw the audience back to this episode to justify Vaughn's "double life" in season 5. If we learned anything from this episode, it's that Vaughn can keep a secret.

I love Sydney in this episode and I love Vaughn in this episode. When she catches him at the bar, his facial expression is PERFECT, I laugh every time. It's like, "Oh, crap!"

I agree Liz. Vaughn hates secrets, it makes him "insane." Hence, why he hated and killed Lauren.

Ha, ha. Yeah. You know, I've been thinking. Vaughn's so good at keeping secrets, but he's so not the secret looking type of guy.

And if Vaughn is great at keeping the P5 secret and all the other...I assume, then why does he get caught looking into Irina? Could it be that he got caught on purpose? Make people think that he keeps secrets, then show a secret to rid them of there seeing eyes so that he can hide the others...the big one...P5.

Nice Rudy, I like that idea!

Well, I don't think of Vaughn as a "Jack." But you do have to admit that he is a little manipulative...positioning himself to be Syd's handler, working with a criminal on the CIA's list, uncovering Prophet Five...he might not as upfront as Jack is at times, but it is there. Right?

I agree Rudy. I think that is why Sydney tell for him. She say the good qualities of her father in Vaughn.

I think Vaughn's whole secrets thing was simply part of his obsession with finding out about his father. He didn't intend to fall for Sydney. She was just the first confirmation of the truth of what Renee had told him. Syd was just a way to find out what really happened to his father. Think how emotionally (as opposed to rationally)he reacted in the library when he injected himself with "an unknown substance" because he "might" find out more about his father.
GS, I think you are right about the writers' need to remind us of Vaughn having been a suspect once we got to S5. I think there are several similar things throughout the series.
Can anyone think of others off hand?

Hey..it is funny that you bring this up..this reminds me of the time we were talking at 2541 Zephyr Avenue. We were talking about which Alias guy we would marry, Jack, Vaughn, Dixon, Sark, Weiss....I chose Weiss to marry because he never manipulated anyone or anything to get what he wanted. Vaughn and Jack are the kings of manipulation, and while Vaughn was the 'boy scout', he really knew what he was doing when it came to protecting Sydney or getting the info that he wanted.

Of course, I would definitely choose Sark for a fling!

Sandi,
As one of the top US fencing coaches once said to me, "You bad!"

Oh Sandi- I am right with you. Sorta. I like Vaughn's danger and rebellion, its hot. Weiss is like a brother type.
