Question of the Day

Here at Let’s Talk Alias, we take pride in challenging the human brain with intellectual conversation about everyone’s favorite show-Alias. Starting this very Monday, we are launching a brand new segment- Question of the Day.

Each Monday I will post a question or questions related to Alias plot, characters and episodes. The questions will be vague or specific and there is no right or wrong answer. The questions are meant to invoke thought and fuel a discussion. So, without further ado, your very first questions…

The number 47 has been haunting our dreams for the last 5 years- it started as a clue to Rambaldi, the 47th page, the 47th room, the number 47 in passwords and codes. But, we have seen the number 47 appear in instances that seem unrelated to Rambaldi. Is 47 a clue to something grander? What do you think is the significance of the number and in what instance was it used that struck you as odd or interesting?

PS. Does anyone know the number of times 47 has been shown on Alias?

I like the question of the day idea! I did some googling to find how many times the number 47 has been used in Alias but couldn't find anything. Something funny I did find was that after the pilot episode of Lost, the number of plane survivors was 47, how funny is that?!?

I believe the first Alias reference to number 47 was non-Milo Rambaldi related. It actually was in the pilot episode when Marshall gave Syd the lipstick/camera. If I remember correctly, he said the camera contained 42 exposures but he wanted to get it up to 47 because it's a prime number. This site is kinda funny, who wants to join the 47 society? :) http://www.47.net/47society/47story/

darn... I was hoping to be the first to respond and say that I would get the ball (the mueller ball) rolling... oh well, I said it anyway.
Here's what I uncovered--
1) 47 is the fifteenth prime number; Rambaldi lived in the 15th century.
2) sydney was born on April, 17 which is 417. Up for debate I guess is her year of birth-- 1975 or 1974; if it's 1974, need i say more.
3) marshall as well as others say that 47 is the most random number of the universe; sort of comical since rambaldi seems to personify the opposite of random.
4) 47 is a super singular prime number--whatever that means-- but to a mathmatician I'm sure it's significant.

As for how many times 47 (0r 74, or numbers with a 4 or a 7 in it)appears, that would be fun to uncover. Since I have "47" other things to do today, I'm not sure if I could start that project for awhile!

47 is the most commonly occurring random (doesn't make it so random then) number in the universe. See this website below:

http://www.47.net/47society/

According to the site it looks like the number 47 is going to show up frequently in life or in this case on a TV show whether done intentionally or not. I also think it’s by no coincidence that JJ and the writers choose the number 47 to be of importance to Rambaldi. As we know there a several times in the show when the number 47 shows up on purpose and is a clue to Rambaldi but I’m sure it’s just popped up on things like street signs, licenses plates etc. simply because it’s the number 47 and it has a habit of doing so. Not every Alias 47 sighting is related to Rambaldi but the fact that it does randomly show up so much probably plays into Rambaldi’s game a little. I sure would like to have some closure on the number 47 on Alias, why Rambaldi uses it, why it’s important to him? Oh and I hope someone really does find out how many times 47 has been used in the show, that would be great, I sadly just don’t have the time to do so.

There are 7 letters in prophet and 4 letters in the number 5. Maybe this helps support the theory that prophet 5 is tied into rambaldi even though we don't hear anyone mentioning rambaldi yet this season. What do you think?

Robetron said...

We do know that the number 47 has something to do with JJ's fraternity in college, right? That's why we see it all over in LOST as well. It's supposed to be some sort of "shout-out" to his frat-bros. I know this may spoil the fun, but hey, I didn't make it up. there are always oportunities (especially in ALIAS) for the use of numbers, which the writers actually have to choose randomly for the use of fictional characters and fictional stories. If you have to choose a random number, why not purposely choose the most frequent random number, especially when it has something to do with a private joke, or a secret handshake- of sorts.

Have the writers or JJ intended forthe number to be a significant clue in the Rambaldi/ ALIAS mystery? I suppose they could have, but I do not see it, if so.

Good thinking! I wonder if there is meaning to that? I'm sure P5 is Rambaldi related but I wonder if the name has significance regarding the number 47.

Hi, alias-loving, forty year old, stay at home mom of two, has been the anonymous writter for this question of the day. I started watching Alias on a New's Year's day marathon in 2002? or 2001?, which aired the entire first season. I have been hooked ever since!! I have read the Abc Alias site for about 18 months and have been reading this site since the begining. I'm not really the blogging type, mainly because of time and my typing skills, or should I say lack there of!
I love this site--so I guess I'll get a blogger name.

momknows said...

ok, this is my blogger name.

yay, welcome momknows! :)

Momknows!!! Welcome and we love having new bloggers! Thanks for sticking with us since the beginning. Sorry ya'll, I am super busy at work, but I have an article in the works, I need to research tonight and watch 1 episode and then I will post it tomorrow. Hang in there.

ah yes, the mag number, good call momknows!

srg-alias, the eposide with sydney canceling Vaughn's hockey magazine subscription has the number 47 in the subscription number. Its 4738273. It's the only one I can remember off the top of my head.

I realize that we have sort of moved on from this topic-- but here are all of the "47" sittings so for this year. I would like to say that i was observant enough to have noticed these, but they are curtesy of AllAlias.com :

5.1--
When Marshall is accessing Vaughn's file for Dean we see Marshall's user number # 212457 in the top left of his computer screen.

When Rachel Nichols looks at Vaughn's file we see ref # 00574 at the bottom of the screen.

5.2--
Sydney calls Marshall at 1:47 a.m.

On the side on the plane in the cargo area where Sydney fights Curtis are the numbers 48732-219

5.3--
Vaughn's hockey magazine showed #4738273#. Also - Syd's address - 2541 zephyr avenue (2 + 5 = 7 and 4 = > 47)

The car Syd, Marshall and Thomas drive in Prague has the number plate 47HRY38

The bike they nearly hit number plate CH47805.

Ssubstance 33 is located in shipping container 1147 at budapest.

Accounts accessed by Rachel (checked by Dean) include several with 4 and 7 in the number. Also Rachel's agent ID = 283784-3208

5.4--
The key code Thomas gave Sydney was 97326347.

When the bank lady check the computer screen we see #001547.

Number plates - if we take the number plates from the car used Sydney and Rachel and the car used by Dixon and Thomas we have #3024 and #8127 - > the last numbers make 4 and 7 = 47.

Rachel's badge in Prague shows number 467.

5.5--
none noted

5.6--
none noted

5.7--
The Lost # Sydney gives Renee for the archive is 1222 - >> this number is made up of 4 numbers which when added together equal 7 hence 47.

5.8--
In Malaga the meet was meant to take place at 30 minutes past two but instead went ahead at 17 minutes past. 30 + 17 = 47.

5.9--
Vaughn's files are located in Server 4, Slot 29. 9 - 2 = 7 - > 47.

The name Sydney gives rfom the SD-6 map is X23 Norte - > X is the 24th letter of the alphabet - > 24 + 23 = 47

Makes me realize how much I must be missing!! Things are hidden everwhere!! Details like these blow my mind!! The writers are great!!

momknows said...

I watched 5.9, Horizon, last night and I came across another 47 that even the pros on allalias.com missed! Renee shows Jack Dr. DeSantis' datebook. She says that three times in four months, the same address is listed, and then once more, three weeks from now. 3+4=7 and 1+3=4.
I also have started to formulate some ideas on what Horizon might be! I'm heading out of town today, Friday 1/27, so I'll try to get them written down Sunday evening or Monday.
