Dirty Little Secret

We have been anticipating Michael Vaughn’s return since his funeral in episode 5.01. We’ve picked up on every clue, clung to every mention of his name, and we now know his brief return in episode 5.09 “Horizon” will be due to a drug-induced hypnosis. With the news that Alias is now in the middle of their final season, is it possible that Michael Vartan will return for good, to finish out the series?

According to the filming schedule of his down-under film, Rogue, Vartan will be back state side by February. Alias will still be on maternity hiatus (that is if Jennifer Garner pops that kid out ever). It has been reported in interviews with various Alias producers that they have not forgotten the importance of Sydney and Vaughn’s relationship to the show and they insure fans that their investment in the love a la Bristow-Vaughn will not go unsatisfied.

There are so many questions still unanswered that are related to Vaughn and his past. Who was his father? Is Bill Vaughn dead? Did Irina kill him? How was Bill Vaughn connected to P5? What did Michael learn in his seven year investigation with Renee? If Michael is dead, who wanted him killed? If he’s alive, where is he and what is he doing?

It only seems right that one of the most vital characters be carried through to the end. Vaughn’s relationship with Sydney launched the show, caused the most tension, the most heart-felt moments and made us believe in the craziness of their daily lives. Vaughn saved Sydney from a double-life. She saved him from Lauren. Now Sydney is pregnant, and she’s been struggling with the idea of raising her child without Vaughn. We’ve seen her reservation, we’ve seen her angst. She and Vaughn have been through the thickest of thick and the thinnest of thin and to end the season without a happily-ever after would not do their love justice, or the show.

With Vartan’s film conveniently wrapping up around the time of Alias’ hiatus return, we may get the happily-ever-after finale, both fans and Sydney and Vaughn, deserve.

I agree with Jenn - it would be ridiculous if Vaughn came back and they lived happily ever after. As much as I love Vaughn's character, and really hoped that it would work out, I think it would be a cop out on the writer's behalf to say that he's not really, really dead. And please, no more clones either.

Yes, I can see both of your points. Just it also seems so unfair to have Sydney have this horrible life, fraut with danger and secrets, and be alone, with a baby. And it seems wrong to end the series without Vaughn, without his character. I would hope he would return in the end, even as a ghost, to at least have a proper send off. His funeral was a joke.

Ok I'm a sap and I hope Vaughn isn't really dead and comes back to marry Syd and be one big happy family. :) BUT, I'm sure the writers could make that a lot more interesting somehow rather than cheesy. I don't see the Bristow/Vaughn family ever really being out of the spy biz, so I'm sure they could come up w/ something good for that. Syd has had some major nasty cards dealt to her so far and I'd like for this one good thing to happen. :)

I can't help remembering that on separate occasions both Syd and Vaughn have said, "You know what I want? I want a normal life."

And raising a baby while being a spy . . . well, that seems to stretch credulity more than Rambaldi. :-)

I'm hoping for a happy ending with a twist. Yep, the family needs to be reunited, but as it's unlikely that evil will ever be eliminated (notice how Syd always has something to keep her in the game), they should keep up their espionage activities. But maybe in a different way.

Boy, would I love to be a fly on that writers' room wall . . .

Maybe they will end with the assumption that Syd. is going to meet up with him further down the road.
