"...Like she were your own daughter..." by SRG

Who be the daddy? Let's ask SRG, one of two new guests writers.

The question of Nadia’s true paternity popped up at the end of season 4. Irena Derevko’s coy “I wonder where she gets that from,” response to Jack’s comment about Nadia being “exceptional” raised my eyebrows as to its true meaning. Was she simply being sarcastic regarding the criminal and deceptive qualities of her and Arvin, or was Irena insinuating that Nadia gets her positive qualities from Jack, making him her true father? This question was slumbering in the back of my mind until I watched the “Mockingbird” episode last night. Hearing Sloane ask Jack to “Take care of Nadia…like she were your own daughter”, with a special emphasis and bitter tone on the last phrase, was like a 4-alarm waking up my snoozing theory. Does Arvin know something we don’t? Could Jack really be Nadia’s father? Here’s what we know about Syd and Nadia’s parentage and how they relate to The Prophecy:

Thanks to Uncle111’s well thought out timeline, Irena evidently had two affairs with Sloane, thus the confusion over whether he was Syd’s father. Jack had Syd’s DNA tested in season 3, which proved what we already knew to be true, that Jack is Syd’s father. So, that matter is (though, you never really know on Alias) settled.
In season 1, Jack, Vaughn and Weiss extracted Syd from FBI custody to prove that she was not “The Chosen One”, who it was said would never see the beauty of the mountain mentioned in the The Prophecy. HOWEVER, aside from Irena telling Syd she was “The Chosen One” in the season 2 finale, her identity as such was basically proven in the season 4 finale, when she was the only one who could destroy Rambaldi’s invention of the big-bad-red-ball-that-makes-everyone-a-nutter. Writer mistake or a storyline we will see again this season? We can only guess.
One of Irena and Sloane’s affairs happened right before she was extracted by her “car accident,” supposedly resulting in the birth of Nadia. Sloane tested his DNA with that of “The Passenger,” and it was a match. Nadia’s identity as “The Passenger” was confirmed by her delivering Rambaldi’s message through a series of drawings while being hopped up with Rambaldi fluid at the end season 3.

All of this seems to add up that Jack is Syd’s father and Sloane is Nadia’s, yet I can’t help but wonder what Irena meant by her comment, and if Sloane knows a truth the rest of us have yet to discover.

Thanks SRG! I look forward to having you post more on Let's Talk Alias!

Thank you for bringing this back up SRG. The conversation between Arvin and Jack giving Jack the power of attourny over Nadia and the plea to take care of her... as though she were his own daughter... totally jumped out to me too. I had it in my notes, but I just couldn't find room to fit it in my own blog for Girlscout.
We'll all be on the edge of our seats to see how this develops.

thanks robetron! So many things were great about that episode, but that quote and how Sloane said it REALLY stood out to me, I was thinking about it the rest of the night!

hmm, someone before mentioned the white light, I'm going to have to go back and rewatch it...oh darn. :)

SRG- Just discovered this blog and as a recent alias fan (have watched every episode up to last night in less than 2 months) I am eager to hear what others say about the show.

As to your suggestion that Nadia is Jack's daughter...do you think that is why Sloane made the deal with the guy in the end because he already knows that Nadia isn't his daughter, but that playing that out is really part of his "end game" so to speak?

You didn't ask me, but I don't think think Sloan has even considered that Jack might be the father. I'll have to go back to season 3 to see why it was that Sloan was so confident that Nadia is his. If she is not, it he may have been mentally needing her to be his due to the loss of Jacquelyn, like he never fully recovered from it. This could also explain his Rambaldi obsession.

No, I think Sloan made the deal because he believes his being free will better enable him to search for a cure for Nadia. Any Daddy might do the same, but Arvin is especially skilled in strategy.

welcome tankia! Glad you've discovered the fabulousness that is Alias. ;-)

Last season when Irena said the quote that made me question Nadia's paternity, it didn't cross my mind that Sloane had any idea. I think for the plot to progress, it would be more appropriate that he wouldn't know the mistake, but it was the way he said "like she were your own daughter" in an almost bitter tone that made me question whether he knows or not (if it's even true). I do think he's sincere in wanting to find a cure for Nadia, but if it helps him stay out of prison, all the better for him, right?

Yes. That's true. If Nadia is not Arvin's, then that would mean his real daughter, the real passenger, is still yet to be found. This seems far fetched, but there has been too many insinuations that Nadia may belong to Jack to simply dismiss.

I know, yet it seems impossible to argue that Nadia ISN'T the Passenger since she delivered Rambaldi's message while shot up w/ the fluid.

Sloane may have found out something from Conrad other than that he was the Passenger's father. It could have been that he was the one to bring in Rambaldi's endgame, or about how to use the orchid, or something we don't know yet. He knew he and Jack were going to work together again after he had been with Conrad, and Jack was with Sloane when he smashed the jar with the green goo that revealed who the passenger was, so Jack was in on finding the pasenger.
Nadia is the real passanger; there
's too much evidence for that. But Jack could be the father- we just don't have enough to go on to know for sure.

ohhh, great observation that Jack was there too when the green goo revealed Nadia's location! That didn't even occur to me but it's a good clue.

OK, guys, I just watched the re-run last night on TNT of the one where Irina says to Jack, "I wonder where she gets that from." Now if the looks that passed between them didn't say enough, then I just don't know. Especially the look on Jack's face. It was like, "Excuse me, what does that mean?" Right before that Jack said he regretted every day what he had done ("killing" Irina) Irina said, "I hope you'll forgive my indescretion with Sloane." And Jack replied, "Of all the things you've done, that's what your apologizing for?" And they both smiled. Good episode! I was glad I caught it. But yeah, wow...

2 more days!

I know birdie, I saw the same thing when I watched the episode last night! The look that Jack gave Irena after she said "I wonder where she gets that from" HAD to be a clue, it was definitely a "what do you mean?" look!
