But who exactly is Renee Rienne?Vaughn told Renee all about Sydney. He didn’t tell Sydney or us for that matter, anything about Renee. I can only imagine that when Mr. Jager from the FBI came to investigate Vaughn in season 2, that Jager was on to Vaughn’s deep cover, full fledged op involving Renee and their investigation into Prophet 5. We’ve been going back to old episodes, reviewing awkward moments, actions that couldn’t be explained, looking for the truth behind Vaughn’s illuminating smile and charming boy next dimples. Over the seven years of his rogue investigation, we’ve seen Vaughn as the tender boyfriend of Sydney the Super Spy. He plays hockey and poker, he loves Santa Barbara and he’ll do anything, including stand up to Jack, in order to protect his love. We’ve also seen him beat the pulp out of Sark, meet former-KGB killers in seedy bars, string Lauren up by chains and then proceed to kill her with three triangular shots to the chest. He went rogue in season 4, helping the Sloane Clone acquire the transistor coil to find out more about his dead father and all the sudden, there was a specific reason he became Sydney’s handler and his name isn’t Michael Vaughn?
Has Vaughn’s current outlandish behavior and deep-seeded bitterness towards to CIA related to his father’s death, all influences of the mysterious Renee? Do they have more in common than we know, than we think? What is your take on Renee’s role? Good? Bad? Is she Vaughn’s sister? Does she know more than she’s lead on? Will we ever get to see Vaughn and Renee working together, past or present?

hey girlscout! Great topic, I can't wait to find out more about Renee in Thursday's episode. My instinct tells me that she can be trusted, that she might be involved in illegal activity, but has some good reason for it. I like the idea that her and Vaughn are siblings. When Syd said "you called him Michael" and she responded "don't worry, he was crazy about you", it's a very ambiguous response that could be said if she was trying to keep her and Vaughn's family ties a secret, but why lie? I haven't looked at any of the spoiler pics about who's in the box, I want to be surprised, so I don't know if it's Vaughn or Renee's father (if it's the same person), or someone else. As for the picture of Syd and Vaughn on the beach, I think we can definitely rule out flashback because she's very pregnant in that picture. I'd love it if it were their wedding, but it could also possibly be a dream.
I am thinking, since it's a mid-deason episode, and that she still is pregnant, that it's quite possibly a wedding. They wanted to get married on the beach, alone. Because they are wearing white, some think it's a dream, that Sydney is dreaming about Vaughn, about them getting married. Not sure, but I did notice that in the picture she is wearing a ring.
HS... you pose some very interesting questions; questins for which we may get answers in two days. Unforunately, its hard to speculate about Renee when all we know is what you have listed in the main blog.
I am curious though, why you supposed she might be Vaughn's sister. It has been a tickle in the back of my mind and it is my instinctive guess that she is. I have no real basis for it. Hasn't Vaughn ambiguously mentioned his sister in the past?
no I don't think a sister has been mentioned before, I think it's just an association between them both being French and them working together. What I'm wondering is where is Vaughn's mom through all of this? We've never seen her, known of her interacting w/ Syd, yet previous mentions of her led me to believe she's still alive. I wonder if she'll come into the picture at all this season.

Yes, where is Mama Vaughn? I noticed that vaughn didn't mention his mother when he said his father took him and changed his name. Maybe there is no mom. Maybe she was just part of his cover. Syd never meets her, and we never see her. Don't you think that's odd? That syd would never meet Vaughn's mom? Would have been an interesting episode. I think the writers wanted to keep Vaughn a mystery to better sell the idea that he's a double agent or bad.
I think they are bro and sis, because...didn't Syd find out she had a sister later in life? recycle story and Vaughn needs some family. Poor guy!
This is what I loved about Alias in the first place, wondering what they're going to do next. I liked when Vaughn went rogue because it further developed his character. I think Vaughn was up to a lot during Syd's missing years. Why else would the Covenant task an agent (Lauren) to marry Vaughn if he was just a French teacher.
I thought I knew the show fairly well, but now feel like I've missed so much and need to go back an re-watch everything. Always fun. I love everyone's theories; thank you for sharing your thoughts.

On the mother subject, it does seem strange. He has mentioned her before, but everyone acts as though she never existed.
And,
Syd was raised by a nanny. Has anyone ever heard anything about that other than that one time? Who was this women and where is she now? Given Syd's nature you'd think she'd say something about her.
True, very true. Sydney has become quite attached to most of the women in her life, Francie, Emily, Nadia and now Rachel. You think she would mention the nanny who raised her. And Jack, does he have parent's? We never hear about them.
I am SOOO Glad that you guys brought up Vaughns mom!! I have been wondering about her ever since the end of last season. I know he has mentioned her in the past but you would think that Syd would have met her seeing as they are (or were ) getting married. I hope that they address that at some point.
i definitely don't think they left the door open for renee and vaughn to be related (keeping in mind it is alias so most doors are continously open) - although maybe it would be cool for vaughn to have some family...maybe if we blow up the wedding pics of vaughn/laurens big day we might see some hints...(:
vaughn's mom would be another one of those nice-to-have explanations but i am leery of things that aren't pressing taking up the precious time we have left in the series to tie up the more important aspects of the show and characters
