Back to Basics: Sydney's Motivation

As we launch ourselves into the wonder of season five, I think it best to look back at past seasons and what drives everyone’s favorite femme fatale. Sydney Bristow is never on just one single mission, she has counter missions, counter motives and a counter attack. Each season she’s racing toward her own end-game. Let’s explore what fuels Sydney’s fire:

Season 1: After Danny’s death, Sydney is hell bent on bringing down Arvin Sloane and SD-6. With each mission she has a counter, given by our fav and man of the hour, Michael Vaughn. Avenging the death of her fiancé, protecting her curious buddy, Will and her oblivious roomie Francie, and trying to manage a semi-decent relationship with Jack, Sydney is working overtime at the bank! And surprise, Spy Mommy is alive!

Season 2: After brining down SD-6 and finally locking lips with Vaughn, Syd thinks she can make a clean break from CIA spy-dom. Um, not so fast. Arvin Sloane is on the loose and Syd will stop at nothing to erase “the pledge on my life.”

Season 3: Dead and gone for nearly 2 years, Syd returns to the CIA determined to found out what happened to her. Up against the Rambaldi-freaks, the holy Covenant, Syd faces an internal struggle of heartbreaking proportions. Her man is married, his wife a Covenant solider, and who is this sister?

Season 4: Hmmm, anyone got any guesses? Sydney takes the train into season 4 with a chip on her shoulder. A little bitter, a little bitchy, proving Sloane wrong is one mission she would love to complete. She has to stop Aunt Elena from red-balling everyone and plan a wedding at the same time. Personally, I think Sydney loses her motivation, which makes for a rocky season of self-contained episodes, awkward silences and forces writers to get back to basics-hence the shocking finale, “First of all, my names not Michael Vaughn?”

Season 5: No doubt little Bristow-Vaughn will be Sydney’s motivation this season. Tracking down the men that ultimately “killed” the love of her life and the father of her child, will prove to be nothing more than classic Alias. She has her motivation back and we all know what Sydney can do with a little motivation. So, she’ll be rockin’ the maternity tactical gear and taking frequent potty-breaks during debriefs, but folks, we got our old Syd back. Thank goodness!

I have heard that they will have filmed enough episodes in advanced that Jen will be in each episode. It is possible that Alias will take a month hiatus, around the Christmas holiday, into January and then will return when Jen is more fit for action. Hard to say though. Can't imagine they could make much of the show without Vaughn and Syd. The writers will take care of it!
