JJ the Clue Man

In an interview with TV Guide, JJ Abrams had mentioned there would be clues given throughout the episode that would reveal the potential path the show would take. And indeed there were. Let's discuss two of the major clues:

1. The song playing in the background at the party in Cape Town was from Sleeping Beauty. Is this a foreshadow? Is Vaughn indeed sleeping?

2. The small sip of "water" Sydney offers Vaughn before he goes into cardiac arrest. Was drugging Vaughn what Jack had in mind when Sydney asked, "what are we going to do?" Also, as Vaughn is taken out of the room, with a sheet over him, the camera turns and focuses on Sydney. Positioned clearly in the background is the hospital cup and straw. If that's not a clue, I don't know what is!!??

What do you think? And did you find other clues?

PS. JJ loves him some music and I find his soundtracks to be some of the best on TV. Vaughn's "funeral" song was Sarah McLaughlin's "Dirty Little Secret." JJ you sneaky devil you!!

Oh, I completely agree that the Vaughn storyline is not even close to over. It seems that Jeff Pinkner (executive producer) is taking over a bit with Alias this year due to JJ's work on Lost and in the movies. Pinkner even talks about the Vaughn storyline in USA Today, saying "There have been a lot of rumors, and virtually all of them are unfounded. Whatever you see on Alias is often not what it appears." Vartan, who seems to bear the brunt of the crash, "is still very much a part of our family."

To me this is a direct rebuttal at the whining, complaining "I miss Vaughn" fans and he is telling them to chill out and just watch. Any Alias fan remembers Jack "killed" Sloane and that is just one of many faked deaths. I think these fans are just mad they may not be in on it.

As for your 2 finds, great job! I am not very good at finding things like that, but I think your two are very telling!

Thanks Andrew. I think that is what I love about Alias the most, the little clues hidden in songs, words, actions. As an English major I learned a lot about foreshadow, the rule of three (when something is mentioned 3 or more times, it usually is a clue toward something) and I love picking those things out.

I am loving Jeff Pinkner. I have watched the DVD commentaries and I think he is a great "replacement" for JJ. I look forward to seeing what he has in store for us.

Not only was the song from "Sleeping Beauty," but the name of the song was "Once Upon A Dream."

I think there were several clues in other seasons that might have given Vaughn's "double-agent" status away.

In season 4 he tells Sydney "well, there's a lot you don't know about me," when she mentions that he hates to dance.

In season 2 Vaughn is under investigation for working with former KGB while researching Irina.

In season 1, Sydney asks Vaughn about a mission report in her father's CIA file. Vaughn is hesitant. And of course, it drives Vaughn "insane" when people question is loyalty.

Stay tuned, I think there will be more clues. Just remember, nothing is as it seems...

No, Jen, I agree. I think there have always been clues. Maybe the writers weren't aware or knew how these seemingly unimportant pieces would affect the outcome of this season, but it certainly all maes sense and fits. Vaughn could very well have been investigating Irina in connection with Prophet Five and his father.
