Non-writer seeks new authors to give blog "lots of soul"
Happy 2012! I commented about this in the last post, but wanted to make sure people saw this call for authors. I apologize for the dead-ness of this blog. I basically inherited it by default of the owner disappearing, and on top of Alias going off the air, my life getting much busier in the last couple years, and not being a writer, writing blog posts is not a priority for me. I would be happy to add folks as authors if they'd like to post articles, and will still follow the blog and comment here and there, but I'm (obviously) not the person to keep it alive. Please let me know if you would like to be an author and I'll set it up!

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 265 of 265Oh my! I'm ready!
Been following the Olympics? My usual is gymnastics with a little swimming and volleyball on the side.
Also interested in Hunted.
Yup, keeping one eye on the Olympics, although I have no idea from one day to the next what events are on. I just catch the recaps in the evening.
Splashy new Season 7 photo making the rounds today to remind us that it's almost time for the return of The Doctor after the better part of a year off (except for the Christmas Special).
Out today, the trailer for Doctor Who Series 7!
Nice trailer, SRM!!
Only 2 things concern me about Series 7. One is spoilery, so we won't go there.
The other is that Moffat is promising less seasonal story arc, and heavier on the standalone. Not my first choice, especially considering how brilliant Series 5's arc was.
Nevertheless, the trailer??? Very spiffy.
Jen opts for a rare non rom-com role. Unfortunately, the result is this.
That was...odd.
REALLY odd!
On a separate note I finally saw all the Bourne movies over the last week. That dude is B.A.D.A.S.S. Anyone planning to see Legacy this coming weekend?
Definitely going to see it. Don't know about this weekend though.
I love the Bourne flicks. I'm disappointed that Bourne himself won't be in this one, but there's no way that I'm going to miss it.
Jeremy Renner is having a good spy year, with MI4 already under his belt and now this.
Watched the "Continuum" season finale last night. Very nice first season, IMO. Good on Rachel. Hopefully it will be picked up for S2. More than 10 eppies would be nice, too.
I just finished watching all of the new Jenn movie clip. She is playing one emotionally/mentally disturbed chick.
Also, I noticed that the clip was playing at 476kps on my computer.
Uncle, that's 12 minutes we'll never get back.
Page,
I'm willing to lose it. I just wish I could get rid of it now. I feel slimed.
Great news for Avengers/Whedon fans.
Not only will Whedon be back for the "The Avengers" sequel, but he'll be back on TV with an ABC series based on the Marvel universe.
Remember the old yarn about how "Alias" was a product of JJ wondering how cool it would be if Felicity was really a spy?
Well, now she is (technically, she was a short-lived spy in MI3 as well, but who's counting?).
Keri Russell gets a spy show of her own on FX (unfortunately, a period piece set in the early Reagan era).
And, oh yeah, she's a SOVIET frickin' spy, not a CIA operative.
Once in a while, I go back thru the LTA archives to revisit what tickled our fancy back in the day.
I was kinda shocked tonite to find out that we were talking "Burn Notice" in the same breath as the underwhelming "Bionic Woman", the convoluted "Heroes", and the earliest rumours of JJ's new series, "Fringe".
Now, fast forward and "Fringe" is 13 episodes away from termination, while BN is only 16 episodes away from drawing even with "Alias" in terms of longevity and will likely surpass it by a country mile.
BTW, did anyone notice that our favourite spy in the whole wide world, quietly, and without any fanfare, turned 40 this year?
Is that even possible? The beautiful young girl that ended "Truth Be Told" with a simple "Hello" is 40?
If Sydney Bristow is 40, what the heck does that make me?
If you wish to remain 100% spoiler free regarding the upcoming season, stick to just the headline of this piece.
Excellent "Doctor Who" news.
John Locke made his "Falling Skies" debut this week.
Page,
I haven't heard of Falling Skies before. Is it good enough to catch up on?
Rough week here. Computer crashed while I'm really busy with jewelry orders. A ring that is due this weekend didn't work out and I have to redo it while putting other pieces that I am woefully behind on off for a few more days. My blood pressure diet is getting old and I hit a pedestrian on a dark street while driving home late last night. He was dressed in black and apparently didn't see me either. He walked away from it and drove off in his own car, but my blood pressure was way up last night. (It's fine right now, thank goodness) You know when you see in a movie or TV someone get hit by a car at night and they show it from inside the car and you see the pedestrian's face right before the car hits? That's exactly what it looked like. Terrifying!!
Wow, Uncle, no wonder your BP is off the charts. Mama said there'd be days/weeks/months like this.
"Falling Skies" is a Spielberg affair (is there anything, including the Obama campaign that isn't a Spielberg affair?).
Original Trailer
TNT's Synopsis: "In FALLING SKIES, Wyle stars as a former college professor who becomes the leader of a group of soldiers and civilians struggling against an occupying alien force. Bloodgood co-stars as Anne Glass, a therapist who works with the surviving children to help them cope with the traumatic situation. The series also stars Drew Roy (Lincoln Heights) as Hal and Maxim Knight (Brothers & Sisters) as Matt, Tom’s two sons; and Seychelle Gabriel (Weeds) as Lourdes, an orphaned teenager who helps run the group’s commissary. Will Patton (Armageddon, TNT’s Into the West) plays a fierce leader of the resistance"
Each of the first 2 seasons is only 10 episodes, so catching up won't take long. I've watched them all since it debuted last summer. Next Sunday is the S2 finale.
IMDB users give it a 7.1 rating, which is probably about right, although IMDB only scores "Alias" a paltry 7.6, so how valuable is their opinion?
Bottom line? I like it and will continue watching if it returns next year and I assume it will.
Here's a new clip from the pilot of "Hunted" featuring Melissa George being chased through the streets of Tangier.
Of course, the BBC has it geo-blocked. The remedy that I use for that annoyance is the Firefox add-on, Anonymox.
On the subject of spy shows, BBC America is conjuring up a mini-series called "The Spies of Warsaw" which sounds interesting.
Fans of "Doctor Who" and "Human Target" will spot some familiar faces in this one. It stars David Tennant (the 10th Doctor) and Janet Montgomery (aka Ames from HT)
Arnie wasted a lot of years being a run-of-the-mill politician, but now he's back doing what he was born to do, in "The Last Stand"
Jen making the promo rounds in aid of her latest fluff piece. The last paragraph in this interview is all I could find of interest. Sounds like JG has softened her stance a degree or two regarding revisiting "Alias".
Looks like September 8 is the kickoff to S7 of "Doctor Who" on BBC America.
Geronimo!
AMC cancelled "Rubicon" wayyyyy too soon, but they've cast one of the stars of that show in S3 of "The Walking Dead".
Bring it on.
Another new trailer for Doctor Who! You're welcome. :)
New trailer, indeed, SRM. And sporting a new and improved start date of September 1, as well.
I've always found 'webisodes' to be pretty darned underwhelming. However, for anyone eagerly awaiting the return of The Doctor, or more specifically, Amy and Rory, the Beeb will be offering up some webbies of their own leading up the the Sept. 1st return of DW.
Awesome, thanks Page!!
I don't recall ever hearing that the role of Sydney Bristow came down to a choice between Jen and Melissa George.
That aside, MG is up for bringing the role of Agent Bristow to "a world that's European, making it a little more like 'The Bourne Identity' and 'Taken' but be less polished"
The full article is here. If she's not exaggerating, "Hunted" could be a hoot.
Here's another article about "Hunted" that gives me hope.
From the Cinemax website, some background info about the show, including the training that MG embarked on to ready herself for the role of Sam Hunter.
And, saving the best for last, here is the Cinemax trailer, which differs considerably from the BBC trailers.
Presumably "Lauren" will be a 'good guy' in this series, which is kinda nice because, as MG said, taking the role of Lauren Reed guaranteed that people were going to hate her. Considering her contribution to our favourite show of all time, I think she deserves a chance to feel the love for a change.
Looks like Agent Rachel's "Continuum" has found its US home on Syfy.
Was that ever in doubt??
Your source for the DW "Pond Life" webisodes.
One webisode per day until S7 debuts on Saturday night.
We now have more info on Joss Whedon's upcoming Marvel Comics based series on ABC.
"Revolution" pilot now available on NBC's site. Not exactly in HD.
Wow! CA was a real shocker last night!!!
Uncle, I won't see CA until tomorrow night, but I can say that I think CA has upped its game in Season 3, which has been a pleasant surprise.
Regarding USA's other spy show, I read recently that Bruce Campbell (Sam Axe) thinks 7 seasons is the magic number for BN to say what it has to say. We're half way thru S6 so the end is in sight. Pity "Alias" wasn't allowed 7 seasons, though.
You're getting me intrigued about CA, I wonder if it will eventually come to Netflix.
I watched the "Revolution" pilot yesterday. It's no "Truth Be Told" (Bad Robot doesn't even seem to name its pilots anymore), but it set up a few mysteries for future episodes.
I only recognized 2 cast members (Elizabeth Mitchell and Giancarlo Esposito), but I couldn't help noticing that Charlie, at times, sports a remarkable resemblance to younger Jen.
It's certainly something I will keep watching to see how it develops.
Saw my first promo for "The Words" tonight. Will Tippen and Arvin Sloane, face to face, one more time.
Don't know how I missed this trailer. It's been online since May.
A little teaser for the upcoming S2 of "Person of Interest"
Wowsers, Uncle! I think that was the single best episode of the series for CA, so far. Too bad they don't all have those stakes and that kind of tension throughout. And that ending was worthy of us diehard "Alias" freaks.
A couple of good things that happened this season are the killing of a major character and Annie's sister leaving. I take both of those events as indication that CA is attempting to get serioused up.
Anytime I see an outstanding episode, I always check the writing credits. This was only Zak Schwartz's 2nd writing assignment. What was the other you ask???? A season one eppie of "Human Target".
Now, can CA keep this up??
Page,
Wasn't that CA ending a real kick?! I too was thinking it was like something from Alias and am hoping they keep this up. HT 1st season writers has got to be the reason.
Give us more!!
Uncle, I've been reading that the CA brain trust deliberately inserted what could easily have been a season-ending cliffhanger at a point where viewers would least expect it, 8 episodes in. Well done, I would say.
On another note entirely, I see that JJ and the remaining "Fringe" showrunner, J.H. Wyman, are already mapping out their post-"Fringe" future, having secured a pilot for FOX. On the surface, that premise does not do much to excite me, but I will always give Bad Robot a chance to win my affections.
BTW, getting back to CA, I just want to make a comment about the music in that final scene.
We all know how amazing the music selection was in "Alias", whether it was Fleetwood Mac's "Songbird" or Cat Stevens' "The Wind". It was a part of the "Alias" experience.
The song used in the final scene of CA was "The Blowers Daugher", beautifully performed by Scala & Kolacny Brothers. This is the same Belgian choir who was recently featured in a trailer for Season 2 of "Homeland" (which is required viewing, IMO), doing Sting's "Every Breath You Take".
One more tidbit about CA before I call it a day.
Did we know (I certainly didn't) that Lena (Sarah Clarke) also plays Alex's mother on "Nikita" and starred in the first 3 seasons of "24"?
Melissa George gets a new poster to go with her new show.
Both of the Agents Bristow are in Toronto for TIFF, in aid of the Ben Affleck film, "Argo", in which VG plays Canadian icon Ken Taylor, who rose to fame 30+ years ago for his role in hustling Americans out of Iran during the hostage affair.
I, for one, hope that Kristen Bell gets her wish and manages to pull off that "Veronica Mars" movie, but I'm not holding my breath.
Nice poster. At the bottom of that article I saw this one about Melissa channeling Sydney Bristow. I had no idea she came so close to BEING our beloved Sydney!
SRM, I was taken aback by that tidbit about MG almost being Sydney as well. I wondered if it was just a detail that I had forgotten over the years or whether it was news to other "Alias" watchers as well.
Not to be outdone by NBC's streaming preview of the "Revolution" pilot, ABC is now streaming the pilot for "Last Resort".
Page,
That was the first time I had heard it almost wasn't a Jen Sydney.
I watched the pilot for "The Last Resort" earlier tonight. I thought it was pretty good and certainly looked big-budget, the way pilots often do. Time will tell whether subsequent episodes will look as good.
Having now seen "Revolution" and TLR, I have to give the nod to the latter as having the better pilot, but I still can't say that either had nearly the power of addiction that "Truth Be Told" had right from the first frame.
Not that I was expecting either pilot to impress me like TBT, but I would absolutely love to be gobsmacked by a new show the way I was 11 years ago this month. How long must I wait????
Page,
Thanks for The Last Resort link. It looks great! I hope they can keep it up. I think it will be hard. I wonder if they will use the Lost model for weaving mystery storyline with back story.
Uncle, I think everyone who sees the "Last Resort" will wonder the same thing, how will they keep the story going forward without getting repetitive?
So, now that we're in September, it's about time to figure out when shows of interest will either debut or return.
"Revolution" debuts Monday, Sept. 17 at 10:00 p.m. on NBC
H50 returns Monday, Sept. 24 at 10:00 p.m. on CBS
"Last Resort" debuts on Thursday, Sept. 27 at 8:00 p.m. on ABC
POI returns on Thursday, Sept. 27 at 9:00 p.m. on CBS
"Fringe" returns on Friday, Sept. 28 at 9:00 p.m. on FOX
OUAT returns on Sunday, Sept. 30 at 8:00 p.m. on ABC
"Homeland" returns on Sunday, Sept. 30 at 10:00 on Showtime
"Arrow" (I'll give this one a try) debuts on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 8:00 p.m. on CW
"The Walking Dead" returns on Sunday, Oct. 14 at 9:00 p.m. on AMC
"Nikita" returns on Friday, Oct. 19 at 9:00 p.m. on CW
"Hunted" debuts on Friday, Oct. 19 at 10:00 p.m. on Cinemax or BBC
"Touch" returns on Friday, Oct.26 at 8:00 p.m. on FOX
"Burn Notice" returns on Thursday, Nov. 8 at 9:00 p.m. on USA
Page,
Thanks for the list!!
CA REALLY upped their game this week!!!!
Uncle, good news, IMO, regarding CA. I read an interview that said that the back half of this season will feature a lot more of Oded Fehr, the Israeli agent.
Fehr has always been one of my favourite guests and I wondered if they couldn't find a way to use him more often. Now apparently they have.
Excellent roundup Page, consider it a new article! :)
It's been a busy week at the shop and on TV. I don't even know what to say about the new season yet. I may need to rewatch some shows, or get my head clear from work, or something first.
Uncle, I've seen the first 2 eppies of "Revolution", which I would rate as decent but yet to reach the level of "high octane thriller" that JJ promised.
"Last Resort" has promise. So far, I would rate it as a better bet than "Revolution", but it's early days for both.
POI got off to a good start.
But, I think the highlight of the new season so far was "Fringe" 5.01, which kicked of the final 13 homestretch in fine style.
I've been less than totally enamoured with the current season of "Doctor Who" because of the standalone format, but tonight's "season finale" was suitably brilliant, as would befit its historic significance in the life of the series.
P.S. Uncle, you're posting on what's becoming an old thread. Time to scroll up.
