I Spy...47

Since we often have bloggers post about their encounters with the Alias-favorite number of 47, I thought it would be fun to have an article specifically for that. So, whenever you come across "47" in some random non-Alias or Alias-related way, post it here! Just think of it as a pun-intended game of I Spy. ;-)

I see stuff all the time with the number "47" on it. And I say to myself, and this is true everytime, "order of rambaldi". Some may find me a little nuts, but at least I know what I'm talkin about. lol.

Couple years ago in art class, I got pissed because I was assigned number 48 cubbie and not number 47. lol.

I have $0.47 left on Worldwinner to play with... then I added $10.00. Oh well.

I accidentally cut the power to my computer before turning it off when trying to go home. I turned it all back on to make sure everything was ok. After checking it out and sending some email I had forgotten about I started to turn the computer off and noticed it was 8:47. I had to stop and report it.

uncle111 said...

Well,
I wondered when and where today's 47 would come from for me. I just got several invoices from my IT service for hosting and domain registrations. One of the invoices, #1076 to be precise, is for 47.52. But then I also finished the movie "Knowing" and in it there were several times that a GPS longitude and latitude setting was displayed which had a number that started with a 4 directly above a number that started with a 7, so there was a 4 on top of a 7.

Do I get more of these that the rest of you or am I just more aware of them?

Page48 said...

Uncle, I watched "Knowing" recently as well. I enjoyed it. It's a typical Nicolas Cage adventure, and a good way to pass a couple of hours.

Currently, I'm watching "Torchwood: Children of the World", which is a "Doctor Who" spinoff. DW has never been my cup of tea, so I've never been in a hurry to try T-wood, but this 5-episode season (which plays out more like a mini-series), has been getting so much promotion that I've succumbed.

I've only seen 3 of the 5 hours so far, but it's much better than any DW episode that I've seen (not that I've seen many), and it sure looks good in HD.

Imagine if "Alias" could return for a 5 episode mini-series, run on consecutive nights, giving the actors the rest of the year to pursue their other (far less interesting) projects. Sounds like a compromise I could live with.

uncle111 said...

You would think that the Alias mini-series idea would be a hot item for any network. I really don't understand why no one who can do something with it isn't.

Page48 said...

Uncle, in a world where TV viewers remember Greg Grunberg more for his 10 minutes of work on "Lost" than his years on "Alias", I don't think we need to worry about any network picking up "Alias" in mini-series format or any other format.

I forgot, last night I was working out some ratios for a formula I could use to predict what 10 and 14 karat gold would cost from my supplier at whatever spot gold price I plugged into the formula. This is useful for setting up charts for future prices for my jewelry as the price of gold increases. That way as it goes up I don't have to drop everything to hurry and figure new prices.

The main factor I needed for the formula for predicting the cost of 10K at various spot gold prices turned out to be 0.0147.

Okay, kids, from time to time here on LTA we hit a dry spell when no one has a bloody thing to say about anything.

We are at such a point RFN (right effing now), so I have decided to make the ultimate sacrifice. Yes, I have decided to stay up late, drink beer and rediscover (for my benefit as well as yours) some of the musical highlights of the 4.77 seasons of joy that "Alias" gave us.

While these are only a few of the many songs featured in "Alias", they are among my personal faves. I have chosen, where possible, to present live versions of these songs performed (of course) by the original artists.

As I chose these songs and scoured Youtube for the performances, I was thrown into a sort of post-"Alias" depression. The beauty of not only the show, but the very carefully selected music makes me long for the days when there was always new "Alias" to look forward to.

Was this a great show or what???

Fleetwood Mac's Songbird from season one's "The Box" (part 2).

Bob Dylan's Shelter From The Storm from season two's "Trust Me"

Joni Mitchell's River from season two's "The Indicator"

John Fogerty's "Bad Moon Rising" from season two's "Passage" (part 1)

U2's "Walk On" from season two's "Passage" (part 1)

AC/DC's "Back in Black" from (as if I need to tell you) season two's "Phase One".

U2's "Bad" from season four's "Authorized Personnel Only" (BTW, how many people reading this blog remember watching "Live Aid"?). Is there anything in this world more uplifting than U2 in their prime?

Cat Steven's "The Wind" from season four's "Authorized Personnel Only"

Bob Dylan's "Lay Lady Lay" from season four's "Before the Flood" (which, for the uninitiated, gets it's name from the 1974 live Bob Dylan album from which this particular performance comes)

Elton John's "Your Song" from season five's "Fait Accompli"

Who canceled this show and what the hell were they thinking? Will we ever see the likes of this again?

uncle111 said...

Page- yes. Great music, and 4.77 seasons. Hmmmm.....

I was just copying an episode of Quantum Leap for my wife to add to her TV Christmas episode collection. In checking the data for the episodes to see which one it was I should have known without looking that it was the episode that was 47 min. and 47 sec. long.

The Last Day of Our Acquaintance". Gorgeous! How about the four Diver sisters (known as the "Screaming Orphans") doing backup vocals? What a great video!

Another of my favourite Sinead tunes is The Emperor's New Clothes.

And how about "This Is a Rebel Song"

Wow, the voice of an angel or what?

Uncle, did I mention that there is talk of a 're-imagined' "Quantum Leap"? I'll try and find the link tomorrow.

I deleted the original post because I forgot to proof it and it had too many mistakes. Here it is again.

Okay, this is going to be a complicated one, but I can't not post it. It has political overtones, but this is in no way a political statement and I do not expect or want a political reply to it. Nor do I want or expect a condemnation for delving into politics. This strictly a 47 siting.

I google a lot of topics as things present themselves to me as being interesting. This evening I was reading about what someone was contending to be the elusive and what others believe to be the mythological Kenyan birth certificate of President Obama. There were pictures of the document. I look at whatever evidence someone wants to present on an issue regardless of what side I am on or what side the information or arguement is intending to support. I try to be open minded and examine the evidence and arguement and then if I find the evidence faulty I will refute without ridiculing.

The document looked pretty good. I went to a lot of blogs where people post on both side of this issue. I did research on several sites to check dates of events in Kenyan history that would apply to the support or the discrediting of the authenticity of the supposed document.

The only thing that makes me suspicious of the legitimacy of the document in the pictures is this:
1- the number of the birth certificate is 47,044
2- Obama was 47 when he became the 44th President.

So, as with S.A.B.47 Project, according to my calculations, meaning Sydney Ann Bristow (is)Rambaldi's Project, 47,044 could mean 47(year old),0(Obama)44(th President).

Either the document is a hoax and the hoaxer has an existential tie to Alias, or there is something really freaky about the number 47.

Either way I think this is an unusually interesting 47 event.

I saw just a bit of MI3 on the tube the other night. I was recalling Pinkner's comments that all Bad Robot shows/movies have references to all other BR shows/movies, so I wanted to see how many "Alias" refs I could spot.

Unfortunately, I could only watch the first 1/2 hour or so, so all I caught was (obviously) the Grunberg cameo and one of the ops whose codename was "Phoenix". And, of course, the Slurpee scene was a near carbon copy the the "Alias" Slusho scene, and included an obligatory 'wheels up'.

And, like "Star Trek", MI3 sports a whole whack of "Alias" bit players.

I'm gonna have to give the whole movie another look when I get a chance, and see if I can spot more "Alias" echoes, including any gratuitous 47's

SRG's post? 12:47PM.

We've mentioned this before, but it absolutely kills me that ALIAS barely got half of the promotion that FRINGE is getting -- (particularly toward the end).

Wah!

uncle111 said...

Page,
That was great.

Page48 said...

ILA4E, there's no question that "Alias" suffered from lack of promotion and also, that shows today get more than enough promo.

Just look at sites like televisionaryblog.com (which I do every day). He writes these stunning reviews for a whole host of shows, including "Lost". I'd kill to read his weekly take on "Alias", but his site only debuted in December 2006.

Look at io9.com, where they do all kinds of promo for sci-fi TV and movies, with daily 'morning spoilers', and all the latest promo photos, etc...

Where were these sites when "Alias" was in production? "Alias" was born too soon, IMO. There was no aliasbloggers.com (as in fringebloggers.com), and even Youtube didn't debut until "Alias" was almost toast.

Nowadays, anyone can go to a torrent site and download a gorgeous 720p copy of any TV show the day after it aired (if not sooner), but there are no (or verrrrry few) 720p HDTV copies of "Alias" available anywhere.

I guess what I'm saying is that "Alias" came along about 5 years too soon to benefit from the kind of promotional tools available today.

Having Canadian network TV place the show in the coveted (insert sarcasm here) 4:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon slot is another sign of how "Alias" suffered from lazy-ass promotion, but that we can't pin that one on ABC.

ILA4E said...

(Made this in the wrong place, whoops).

All that is completely true, Page, and very reasonable to question, but just as importantly, would ALIAS have lasted as long as it did in this day and age, anyway?

I really would like to think that it would, but when it first aired, there really was no other show like it (24 premiered only very soon after, yes? Not to mention that the lead was incredibly strong, and female).

Although, we do complain now about the lack of substance in television series, so maybe it would have flourished to new heights.

But we compare everything we watch now to ALIAS, at least in ways of story-telling, characters and plots -- what if something like "My Own Worst Enemy" debuted first? Would we be saying something completely different?

While it can be said that ALIAS was maybe a victim of its time, it may also be true to say that it happened at the right time... *shrugs*

Bloody sucks that we'll never, ever know.

BTW, still waiting for it on BluRay. Idiots!

Page48 said...

ILA4E, funny you should mention MOWE.

io9.com recently asked the question, Which new TV show will be this year's "My Own Worst Enemy"?

MOWE was doomed from the beginning because it was a show about a glitch. It cried out for a purpose other than watching Henward go from Jekyll to Hyde and back again.

I think "Alias" would thrive out of the gates today as it did in 2001, if it got the go ahead. The question today is, would any network even go forward with an ambitious serial or is viewer attention span simply a thing of the past?

One thing for sure is that ABC didn't develop websites like Massive Dynamic or Imagine the Impossibilities or Complete the Pattern in an effort to lure people to the story of Sydney Bristow.

ILA4E said...

You know, I think ALIAS would do well, too. But yes, there is the fact that a network like ABC have pretty much given up on serialised television series altogether -- at least for now.

Ah, it is so frustrating!

I want it back.

Friday- one on an old Star Trek episode
Saturday- one on a season 2 Monk
Sunday- plates on car in front of me had a 47.

uncle111 said...

These three were personally vindicating for me.

My wife was sitting next to me today as I ordered a Blu-ray player. I called the order in since I was using a gift card and a credit card for the purchase. They gave me the order number which my wife wrote down. I could see that something didn't register with her, so I read the number back to the guy taking my order. When I got to the part of the number with 47 in it I stressed the 47 and looked at my wife. After I was off the phone I told her I was glad she was there to see it because if she hadn't been she wouldn't believe it. She replied that even though she was there she didn't believe it.

She walked with me to the garage when I left to come to the shop to work on my day off (normal event) and when I got in the car I noticed my travel odometer, which I reset after I fill the tank) read 47.9 miles, which I reported to her and then quickly sped away.

While typing this my wife called and I read her a message to return a call to someone who just called to speak to her. I hadn't noticed when I wrote the number down, but it had a 47 in it, which I pointed out to her.

All of this took place within 45 minutes.

Wow, I'm glad to know I'm not the only "mature" person who enjoys the Narnia movies. I thought the first was the better of the 2, but I enjoyed both.

While we're into the "kid's" movies, I also enjoyed "City of Ember". If that means I'm a kid at heart, so be it.

uncle111 said...

I don't know City of Ember. I'll check it out.

The first Narnia movie was better, but so was the book. Prince Caspian is slower, and not a new a concept as the introduction of Narnia and Aslan. There's only one introduction to the scheme of things.

Voyage of the Dawn Tredder has a wealth of imagery and should make for a super movie. It will be out I think a Christmas next year.

I was introduced to The Chronicles of Narnia in my mid 20's when I met my wife, who had just written her Master's thesis on the books. She found them when she was in 4th grade.

A great story-
When My wife turned 40 I had friends and relatives shoot short videos for her birthday and I edited them all into a video for her party. One of her friends from graduate school sent a video which started out with the friend reading from my wife's thesis as the camera panned around the room. We had no idea what the setting was. The camera was panning book cases with glass fronts. When the camera came to rest we could see my wife's friend reading from her thesis while seated at the desk C.S.Lewis wrote the Chronicles of Narnia from. We were stunned.

I had to call a customer who didn't get a receipt for an online order. His phone number ended in 4767.

The insanity continues. Has anyone figured this out yet?

ILA4E said...

Coincidence. :)

uncle111 said...

Way too many for coincidence. Part of it is planned by those who choose to put 47 out there. Part of it may be attributed to to the contention of some that 47 is the most commonly occurring random number, though I haven't seen any stats on that. It seems to me that I have way more of these that anyone else here. That might be related to me being more reflexively aware of 47's when they cross my path that other's may be. But I still don't know if that can account for all of.

Whatever it is, it's interesting.

SRM said...

I will be seeing 47 every time I get in my car for a while as it just reached 47,000 miles.

uncle111 said...

SRG,
That's like when our online orders hit 4700. I had a 47 for the next 99 orders.

I watched an episode of JAG this evening while I worked. I don't usually catch the time stamp they display to create a timeline in the stories, but I caught one tonight- 1447 Hours.

And I just finished Alias S4E2 on my iPod. The next episode shows a total time of 40:47.

Page48 said...

It just occurred to me on the weekend that for the past dozen years, I've been getting out of bed at 7:47 a.m. to be at work for 9:00 a.m. That pre-dates "Alias".

Page,
That's a good one. Don't you love it when a big one sneeks up on you?

I had a 47 on an original Star Trek episode over lunch today. But that's not really worth reporting since that series may be where all this 47 on screen thing started.

Watched a Morgan Freeman movie called "The Code". Freeman and Antonio Banderas break into basement of jewelery store. Alarm tripped. According to subtitles, Russian security guard says "Zone 47. Basement stairwell door."

uncle111 said...

There would be lots of 47's for anyone who (hasn't already) broke into my jewelry store:)

This morning I heard on the radio that a Congressman had received 147 emails complaining about something.

And I just received an online order where the credit card number began with 474477.

When it's active, it's really active.

An industry advisor sent out a link to a place to get polo shirts with your store logo embroidered on them for CHEAP. Their phone number - 847-4478. Looks a lot like the card number from earlier today (in the previous) post doesn't it?

uncle111 said...

I got an automated emailing about JG. It had a link to an article about her that had this number in the link:

Rambaldi ring , version2.
When I was editing this picture and opened it with Windows picture manager it was too large for the screen and WPM automatically reduced it to fit the screen. So, of course, it reduced it to 47% of original size.

This has been a crazy day for 47s:
1 credit card number from a customer had 2 47s.
Another card number from another customer had a 47.
I had to deal with a charge to a card from April of 08 that had a 47 in it.
Someone else who wanted prices on a couple of engagement rings- both of the rings had stock numbers with 47s in them.
And someone left a phone number to return a call that had a 47.
And I can't rmrmner now what it was, but there was something that was numbered 147.

uncle111 said...

I've had several 47s the last 2 days that I have forgotten because I've been so busy.
But there is one freom yesterday that stuck with me and one so far from today.

Yesterday we were watching the pilot episode of The Man From U.N.C.L.E., which is celebrating the 45th anniversary of the pilot this week (shot in 1963). I have reported before that in one scene they show the odometer and the travel odometer twice, both times they both had 47 in them. Yesterday I noticed something I had never noticed in this episode before. There is a shot of a type of pressure gauge that was depicting an impending disaster. The moment the gauge comes into focus enough to read it the level of the gauge is 47.something.

Just now I read an email that I supplier sent showing the tracking number for some parts for some U.N.C.L.E. gun replicas I'm finishing. Here is the middle set of numbers in the tracking number:
477 13 4703.

I don't know if anyone has noticed, but I'm beginning to get more double sets of 47s.

BTW, the 3 in 4703 in the tracking number is one digit off of the address I grew up at.

Heard a radio report today about Michael Vick and his dog past. I went online to check out a number used in the report and found this quote from the Washington Post's site:
"Of the 47 surviving dogs, 25 were placed directly in foster homes..."

I've had more 47's the past 2 days, but I've been so busy it seemed silly to take the time to even write them down.

Has anyone heard from Robetron? What is he doing?

uncle111 said...

This morning I saw that 47% of those who live area of Chicago around the proposed site of the Olympics do not want the Olypics there. And then I heard on the radio that 47 Senators have signed on to the public option part of the health care bill.

This evening my sister flew in to spend the week with my mom. On the way in from the sirport shw told me about her gymnast daughter getting her into shape by walking. They ended up doing a 5K walk race. Their time for their race was some 47.something minutes.

My wife has taken to deducting 47% from my Christmas present (or from what's left of it) everytime I mention 47 to her, so I had my sister tell her this 47.

uncle111 said...

I've had my usual ongoing 47's, but I've been too busy to report them. They have tended to be the usual types and haven't motivated me enough to interrupt things to report them.

However, today I noticed that 2 days in a row our web referrals from Google totalled 47, with one of those also equalling 47% of referrals for that day.

I also just got a notice from the doctor's office to call and schedule a yearly checkup. There was a 5 digit number above my name on the post card. The number began with 47.

uncle111 said...

I saw 4 47's today. One was the monthly payment for an item in a banner ad on a site. The other one that is notable only because...
A Youtube link someone sent me. By the time I got to it it had 1,470,718 views.

uncle111 said...

OK, here's a reverse 47. Gay marriage was overturned in Maine last night. The vote to overturn is reported everywhere as 53%. How come no one reports the % against overturning? I assume that if you take the 53% to overturn, and subtract that 53% from the total possible % of 100 that you would get 47%.

Where is the 47? I want my 47. Free the 47!!!!

Or, could it be that 47 is now so common it is just assumed?

2- My bank statement showed a funds transfer with a 47 which left a balance with a 47.

I was watching a bonus disc for the Wizard of Oz and just happened to notice something when I was fast forwarding through a silent movie from the 1920s(?)called The Magic Cloak. I couldn't believe it, so I caught a frame to post. I didn't assign a title to the picture, but my software did-snapshot20100228192047

Just now as I was uploading the picture I noticed it has a number at the top. I suspect part of it may be a 47, but I'm going to have to get it back on my computer at home and see if I can scroll far enough to see. If it is that would make this a triple 47. Something more interesting than the normal single 47's I still notice all the time.
