Scene Cap of the Day

All is revealed.
She knew her husband was not the president of Credit Dauphine. She knew the work he was doing was dangerous and like many of his employers, Sloane's wife believed he was working for the CIA. In this scene, at the beach, Sloane reveals all to Emily. The pain in her face, the disappointment and anger in her eyes, intensified by the music, makes this one of the most powerful scenes of season 1.
On the DVD commentary, Ron Rifkin (Sloane) explains that he had been given a long speech to resite about SD-6 and his work for this scene. However, JJ had insisted it be put to music, which Jennifer adds, makes it perfect. I find the scene strong and moving- a real symbol of Emily's strength. She comes to understand all her husband has done, yet still loves him.

aww, this scene was like her best perfermance on this show. I love Emily. But given that, it pains me to watch this scene because the actors are so good, as is the actions of the scene. *tear*

I was going to mention the shmata on her head, but I wasn't sure who would get the reference. Ron Rofkin is so funny on the commentary. "Bradley, why are you being so mean to Merrin?" And Merrin keeps saying, "Schmata or no?" I laugh so hard during that commentary. I also love when Jennifer says, "Victor Garber does not like props. he hats business. He hates anything that distracts from saying the lines. I can't believe he even agreed to do this scene."

This scene would be far less dramatic and touching if you could hear what was being said. I think this is one of the most humanizing moments for Sloane in the series. You can't just hate Sloane - he is so twisted, but you can almost (not quite) forgive him as he justifies all the bad things he does in the name of the people and Rimbaldi quest he loves so much when you see his inner turmoil, as in this scene.

The scarf thing is a bit distracting. Was this a fashion statement or was this related to her cancer?

It was related to her cancer. She wore it in a few scenes. Oh that little schmata! HHAHA

Wait a minute, if I failed to live up to someone's expectations, chances are they'd be all over me like I clubbed a baby seal or something. Sloane, on the other hand, fesses up to Emily after 40(guessing) years of marriage that he is not the mild mannered banker he has claimed to be, that he is, in fact, a fully functioning one-man "axis of evil" reponsible for decades of inexcusable crimes against humanity and she STILL LOVES HIM for crying out loud!! Wow, I need a hug!

Actually, I think Arvin Sloane is a beauty of a character and a key ingredient in Alias's appeal and I probably love him as much as Emily did.

aw doppel, you know how to get the ladies with the *tear*! :)

I'm with you Liz, I could never fully hate Sloane because he wasn't a one-dimensional villian. He had a heart, he loved his wife and that was no front, it was hard to ignore that. Everytime I hear that Natalie Merchant song (I have the cd) I think of that scene, it's very powerful with the music overlying the dialogue.
