Our Own Decipher

YAHOO!! Thanks to Blogger Alex, we have a clear clip of the inflamed Rambaldi page.

What do you see? What do you think it means?

I see the eye of Rambaldi . . . and some squiggles. Didn't he speak Italian?

It could be in Latin, all I see is what looks like part of the word LOST. There have been so many similarities between the eppys I can't help but think something is up! Maybe P5 is behind the Dharma stuff too and "The Others". Just kidding. :-D

I see a SE or an SB on the edge. Other than that, its all foreign to me!!

ihaaheim i dont htink its latin because i took it in school and i dont recozine some of those letters in it but i could be just sleeping in those class.

also your welcome girlscout glad i could help!

Yeah Latin was just a blind guess based on it being the predominate language during Rambaldi’s time. I'm actually in the middle of researching now and hope to have info or at least an educated guess on what language it is in and what it could mean later tonight. Yes I'm being a dork again but I can't help myself I'm just far too interested now. Currently I'm leaning towards Italian but I have lots more to go through.

lily'smom said...

I doubt it's Italian becase Italian uses the same letters we do. Looks like Greek, maybe? Is that a sigma and a pi in there?

lily'smom said...

And maybe a phi as well? Those last three letters look like phi sigma pi...sounds like a fraternity :-)

Okay I have a much better picture of it now, this one shows it after it's burnt in and it looks completely different from the picture posted here. Let me know if you want me to send it to you GS?

alex said...

^ heyy could u send that pic to me?

lhaaheim said...

Sure what's your e-mail address?

BTW I now take back the Italian thing, which was based on the fact that SE is used in Italian to convey a conditional meaning, basically "if". But the new picture I have seriously changes what it looks like. I however do not stand by anything I come up with since I'm not a professional and am just doing this for fun! :-)

Yes, friends, those are Greek letters. The spiral-looking character is a xi (pronounced "ksee").

Those letters together do not actually form a Greek word. I have a feeling that it is a cypher text of some sort, which is what Sloane was pretending to try to decipher to keep P5 on his side. Its a great shot, but it realy doesn't help us much to figure it out in advance.

I don't know that this has anything to do with Page 47, but this is the current active thread.

As far as P5 knows, the Chosen One and the Passenger are both dead. They must believe that they are no longer necessary, or they believed they were never necessary for whatever they have planned, supposedly what Rambaldi had planned. Any ideas?

Kiki said...

Well, Sloane must have read something on the page before Nadia come over- he must have known she was no longer useful. And you are right Uncle- the Chosen One is dead- Ana. Sydney has seen the Mt. So- hmmmm

I have come to a conclusion of sorts... based on the picture I have of the page after it has burned. It's from last week’s episode and it's the shot right after we see Nadia die. So after reviewing every ancient and modern script, yes I went through them all and from what I can see in the screenshot that I took (it's much clearer then the picture in the flames) it is my conclusion that the Rambaldi code does not match an entire script. Instead it appears to be a combination or at least styled after a variety of ancient scripts including ancient Greek (in multiple forms), Aramaic, and Hebrew; and if taken very simply possibly Latin. So not much progress, however I wonder if there has ever been mention of Rambaldi being a linguist or working closely with a linguist. I wonder if Rambaldi created his own language. Tolkien created more then one so I wouldn't be surprised if Rambaldi did as well. Or the Alias prop people said "screw it let's just write a bunch of stuff that looks like letters, I don't think the fans will look too closely". So that was my amateur attempt to try and figure it out. I am no expert so it doesn't surprise me that I couldn't figure it out. It was however enjoyable learning about the many different languages our little world has.

Oh my gosh! It's sooo clear!!! Can't you see it!!!

Check this out... Okay, the picture is a pic of the "Chosen One" right?

The circle part is right at the neck between where both clavicles meet... You gettin' me...

So, check this out... On the left side is the "less than" sign and the right is the "greater than" sign..

So, 2 theories here...

1) Being that it's close to her larynx (voice box) and the mathmatical signs are on either side of that place, could it mean that what what she has to say may be greater or less than what the receiver/listener will expect to hear???
-OR- (stay with me people)

2. "Should any life-threatening problems arise...Perform trachiotomy here"

OR!!!!! (I'm brain storming people!!! Bear with me. You know you wanted to say these things yourselves) ;)

Or, The eye sees and it's over her larynx so it's trying to say, "Hey, this chickie knows y'all and can see right through you and you'll know it when she speaks"

Or!! Her Prophet-ness is your life's breathe cuz she can see right through you.

Even better!!! "See, now you WISH you had signed up for ancient Italian and/or paid more close attention in the class, you slacker!!!"

Sorry, just feeling silly tonight I guess. ;)

Oh, I am brilliant, BRILLIANT!!! How can you people stand to be in my presence?? BOW!!!

...Hey, pass me the pretzels will ya! :D

Carley- you are so silly. You need some sleep!

Carley, keep it coming! You're hilarious! And I do actually like your mathematical idea. I never thought of it in that way.

carley i actually think ur right about something doing with the circle near the throat because if u look at the spoiler pics on alias-media then u will see she had a cut/blood coming off her neck with like goz covering it up......

I actually gave some serious thought to wha tthe symbol might mean, and without having given any effort into research or symbology, here is what I think about it.

The less-than sign in its appropriate spot, and the greater-than in its place, the center does not appear to me to be a perfect circle, but more of an oval; most likely, the symbol we call "zero." (Which reminds me of Marshal's comment regarding the concept of "zero" when they first found the machine-code in S1-E2.)

There is such a thing as thess than zero. There is obviously things that are greater than zero. The symbols together, however, form something like non-sense. there is nothing that is both less than and greater than zero at the same time. It is illogical. Assuming that Rambaldi intended it to mean something when taking it as the symbol for his followers, we can safely see that it was not literal, but figurative. Something less than and greater than zero is certainly a 'paradox', or a 'mystery'. Or, being that the literal interpretation of the symbol is illogical, maybe its figurative meaning is something like 'chaos', though, I think there is already a symbol for that.

Being that it is unlikely that anyone will post or revisit here, I am feeling freer to expand on my thoughts. I think the Rambaldi symbol can also appear as something in sequence. I mean, each shape that contributes to the symbol may have its own figurative significance. The idea of Nadia on one side and Sydney on the other carries this sort of idea. The lesser on one side, the greater on the other, both holding, bracketing, or putting presure on that which is in the middle.

The zero has some pretty significant symbolism in itself and it's numeric value should not be dismissed. Zero is equivolent to nothing. Figuratively speaking, the characteristic it might share with another concept is "nothingness" or the eventuality and danger of becoming non-existant.

It is possible that the destiny of the human race is symbolized by the 'zero' and the lesser and greater signs symbolize the two powers holding it in check. I don't know if Nadia and Sydney necessarily fit that bill, but if they are the Chosen One and the Passenger, they may be the two powers who prevent humanity from eventual extinction - nothingness.

If Irena's interpretation is incorrect and the lesser-than and greater-than signs are not her two daughters, then perhaps they symbolize the two forces of good that prevent the end of the world. The two forces could be as follows:

Greater-than: Sydney and all the crew with whom she works, as well as those who have never betrayed their duty would be holding one side of human extinction in place.

Lesser-than: We certainly cannot accept that anyone who is purposely doing evil in the world for selfish gains as a force for good. Sloane, however, has repeatedly said that his intentions have always been about doing what it takes for the "greater good." He may not be a pure source of right or good, but sometimes chaos, destruction, and nothingness needs to be held in check by "the lesser of two evils." Sometimes, doing right means getting dirty, and Sloane has been willing to do that.

Okay, my phylosophizing of a fictional TV show has gotten out of hand. I will quit now.

I Love everyones theories!! I never thought of the whole greater than and less than thing...it enables me to look at the rambaldi symbol in parts rather than as a whole. Isnt it fun getting so involved and being analytical about something fictional!!! I am so glad that I have you guys to make me feel half way normal! LOL :)

I'm Italian and, tho I love Alias, I must say the people behind the show often make mistakes as regards the Italian language and Rambaldi. I remember in an episode there was a document with important info on it but... it was actually an article from a famous Italian newspaper: it was about a soccer match!!! But non-Italian speakers were supposed to believe it was about classified stuff or something. I think the "screw it let's just write a bunch of stuff that looks like letters, I don't think the fans will look too closely" theory is the most suitable. By the way, the Latin alphabet is the same as the English or Italian one. No weird symbols in it! In that piece of paper there is some Greek too... maybe we should just take those clues lightlier!

;-)

Marcello, I agree we should probably not take what is written on the page so seriously. However the meaning behind Rambaldi's symbol should be important and the writers really can't skimp on explaining that. I really like your mathematical explanation Robby, you presented it very well. Though I wonder if the lesser than person might be Irina; instead of Sloane. With Sloane's latest betrayal and despite Irina's bad parenting skills, she is still far less evil then Sloane and just as much of a follower. Hopefully we will find out soon what it all means. I really hope they don’t leave this unanswered.
