Pro-Mo

CAUTION: This article contains some spoilers about happenings in episodes 5.11 and 5.12 related to Will's return.

Professional…mother. Sydney Bristow, on the verge of birthing television’s first SpyBaby, is going to be joining the circus, or at least participating in a juggling act. In one hand, her daughter, beautiful baby Bristow-Vaughn in all her splendid pink glory and in the other, dark international terrorists and a 15th century prophet out to destroy her life. Hmmm. For many, it’s a no-brainer; wrap up the bundle and disappear. But for Sydney, that means leaving her family and friends behind, potentially placing them in harms way as pawns in a game of kill or be killed.

As we all know, Bradley Cooper will be returning to reprise his role as Will Tippin, Sydney’s oldest friend with a jones for the spy-biz. It was released that Tom Grace will be asked to break into Witness Protection files- either to help protect Will or to share Will’s whereabouts with some not so nice dudes. Will will once again be kidnapped and tortured, which will be a Batman-like deacon for Sydney to return to APO. We have gone around and around about whether Sydney would likely retire from the CIA in the light that she is now a mother. Some say yes- she will leave to be with Vaughn and their child. Some say no- that the business is all she knows and that she would never be able to sleep at night knowing that she wasn’t doing all in her power to stop the baddies. I say- let us take a look at the evidence.

The last handful of times Sydney has attempted to leave the CIA, she’s been pulled right back in. In the pilot she wants out, only to discover she’s working the same people she thought she was fighting against. She tried to leave once SD-6 was brought down, but Sloane was on the run and Sydney had to stop him. She faked us all out in opener for season 4, when she pierced Bodean’s ear and was reprimanded by Director Chase. But she just couldn’t leave and volunteered for special ops.

In “Horizon” Sydney told “Vaughn” during one of the memory scenes in micro-self storage, that she wants to leave the life behind. She wants to disappear with Vaughn and the baby; she wants everyone to forget about them. But it looks as if leaving the CIA, leaving the life that she was programmed to live, will prove hard, even looking into the face of her new born baby. Will’s return and need of rescue is proof of that. There will always be a bad guy, there will always be someone who needs rescue and Sydney Bristow is just too passionate about her work. So, she will rock her daughter to sleep, tuck her into bed and then slip out like the spy that she is- to keep her family and friends safe…not to mention the enter free world. Nice work Mom!

PS. Come on! She doned several ridiculous preggo alias' all in the name of finding out about P5. She was dangled 400 feet up in a car, she was kidnapped and put under hypnosis. This woman is willing do anything and everything (even super preggo) to bring down the bad guy. She ain't walking away! But maybe...

Nice point Lhaa. I hadn't thought about Vaughn leaving. Hmmm. Interesting. I can imagine that Sydney wouldn't want him swinging around the world endangering his life when he has a wife and kid at home. Hmm, interesting. And you are right, it's in his blood and who he is. Didn't he at one point try to talk Sydney out of quitting?

Thanks Princess Cheryl. I thought we needed an article focused on it, though I know we have talked about it a couple fo times briefly. I will look forward to your archives questions!

Until P5 is brought down and all evil Rambaldi followers nutralized, and until there is some kind of end to the whole Rambaldi "thing" so that there is no reason for anyone to follow him any more, I don't see Syd and Vaughn being able to quit. If they do they will be turning the world their child will have to live in over to the likes of Elena and Sloane, which would mean their child wouldn't live long, or would live under some horrible Svogda type reality.

A mystery that is so seldom even raised is who was the nanny Jack hired and let raise Syd after Irina took off? Both of Syd's parents abandoned her to hired help to raise. Who was this woman and what intrigue might she hold?

Don't think that I remember Syd being raised by anyone? Though I guess that it makes sense since Jack went to prison for a year after Irina left and then was depressed after that.

** I don't think that Syd will live the agency. If she ever did, she would be always looking over her shoulder and wondering.

Jack tells someone in one episode that he had hired a nanny who raised Syd. It seems very mysterious that Syd has never talked about her. In fact, Vaughn talked more about his mother.

Right Uncle111. Syd is so grounded and responsible, she had to have learned that from someone. She is very sentimental about the positive people in her life, life Emily, like Nadia, Francie, Danny and Will. You think she would speak about the woman who raised her while her father was out on missions. Hmmm. This is why I think Alias should have a prequel. We need answers to these questions to better understand characters.
