In On It

She watched him die. She buried him and now she is ready to give birth to his child. Sydney Bristow has lost two fiancés in her battle against evil; Danny to the clutches of SD-6 and Arvin Sloane and Vaughn to the gophers of the mega power, Prophet 5. Though it may seem obvious to us that Michael Vaughn is still alive- (the word of SpyDaddy to “help,” the cup of mysterious liquid and the foreshadowing of a Sleeping Beauty ballad), it might not seem so obvious to Sydney.

Though there have been some instances that would maintain that she is in-the-know when it comes to Vaughn’s whereabouts (her lack of emotion, the look on her face after Vaughn’s body is carted away, and the keeping of the hockey magazine), there have been several moments when it would seem that Sydney is in actual anguish and believes her love to be dead.

When Sydney was assumed dead and then returned, she lectured Vaughn about having faith, about finding the truth and “not giving up on us.” She told him, “If it had been me, I would have waited.” After all she has seen and experienced in her line of work- the false deaths of Irina, Emily and Sloane, and the rejuvenating Evil Francie - it would be conceivable that Sydney would take death with a grain of salt. In the season premiere, in Vaughn’s hospital room, Jack informs them that Gordon Dean was a well-placed plant and Sydney asks, “What are we going to do?” SpyDaddy then gets on the horn, asking APO for passports and plane tickets, a transport, etc. Ten minutes later, Vaughn goes into cardiac arrest and apparently bites the big one. The stare down between Sydney and Jack after Vaughn is taken away (and at the funeral) would suggest that both Sydney and Jack are in on the plot to conceal Vaughn from P5 in order to track down the baddies that threaten his life.

In the last episode, "Vaughn" (Sydney's subconscious) insists that as long as he is around, Sydney is in danger, that the bad guys win. He repeats that he must go away, he must leave, and in the end Sydney lets him go. Though most of the scenes were rather ambiguous in regards to whether or not Vaughn is still alive, the memory scene of him in the hospital caught my eye. The doctor places a cup on the table and instructs Sydney to have Vaughn drink it slowly. She remembers that once she gave him the water he flat-lined. This would suggest that she didn’t know the contents of the cup would render Vaughn “dead.” Perhaps she didn’t know by what means Jack would “help” and in that dream she was able to piece together Jack’s plot to save Vaughn.

In episode 5.02, Sydney tells Jack that she heard the baby’s heart beat for the first time today and that Vaughn-“he should have been there.” Yes, he should have been there, but due to the investigation into P5 and the threat to his life and Sydney’s, he could not be. But perhaps this phrase could also mean that he should have been there, but he’s dead, so he could not.

Fans have argued that Sydney’s lack of emotion at the funeral would tell us that she knows Vaughn is still alive. I related her reaction to how accustom Sydney has come to losing people in her life. Her reaction to Danny’s death was highly emotional, full on screaming and crying for weeks, even months. She was young then, naive and angry that she had been deceived by Arvin and SD-6 and that the man she trusted could kill someone she loved. All she has seen and experienced over the years since Danny’s death would render anyone emotionally hard, so the absence of full-on tears doesn’t strike me as odd. Personally, I don’t think her lack of emotion tells us anything about what she knows related to Vaughn’s “death.”

What is the verdict on this? Does she know? Is she in the dark? What conclusions have you come to? Why?

Good questions GS. My intial reaction and what I still believe is that yes, Syd does know that Vaughn is alive and in hiding. I originally thought that because of her lack of emotion and the long staredowns she had w/ Jack in the season premiere. I don't care how much Syd has seen in the last 5 (7 for her) years, I doubt it would harden her so much that she couldn't shed a tear for the love of her life. This I believe was further confirmed by the doctor telling Syd to give Vaughn the drink slowly in Horizon. Syd wouldn't blindly follow these directions if she didn't know what she was giving him, I'm pretty sure she knew that liquid would send him into a coma/false death.

Good points both of you! I agree. I think she knows and I think Irina knows too!

jenn, I agree with you completely on your points about Syd not wanting to give Vaughn the drink in her dream because she didn't want to say goodbye to him, and that Jen was instructed to act exactly how she did at the funeral.

My First post since spy baby Asher was born! :) LOL!
I think that I agree with Jenn (as well as most everyone else) in that I beleive that Syd knows but doesnt exactly know everything. The writers have done such a good job throwing clues in every direction. Giving us reason to suspect one thing and then giving us just as much reason to suspect the opposite. It will be Very interesting to see what Really happened in the end. Ahhh, I hate saying "in the end"! That makes me so sad!

SARA!! She has returned!! So, happy to have you and SpyBaby Asher back int he fold! Please take a gander at past posts! And welcome back!

I LOVE THIS SITE!!!

Thanks Amy! I love my bloggers! And SpyMommy, I am so torn between whether or not she knows! You are so right, Jack usually operates under the radar. Remember when he faked Sloane's death, Sydney had no idea and she was so mad at him! And then it was revealed. Jack hardly ever includes Sydney in his plans. And again, by her memory of the cup in the hospital, it would appear she doesn't know. I guess we'll all be surprised. Miss you SpyMommyWillSpank!

i have to say i JUST discovered this blog today and i absolutely love everything about alias and jennifer g .....

i am currently going back and reading (maybe posting) on all of your old entries! i love that other people are as loyal and Alias obsessed as me. i try to convince my husband it is a healthy obsession even though i have about 200 pic of jen on my computer.....

my favorite site (maybe until now) is jen-garner.net

one of the coolest things alias-related to happen to me was i got to see jennifer and michael on set in LA when i was there visiting. we literally just stumbled upon the shoot while touring old LA and of course stuck around to watch several takes (season 5:1) and snapped some pics of jennifer and michael....no one could believe that i saw her and the alias shoot since i am from MICHIGAN and so crazy about ALIAS!!!

The thing that has struck me in the episodes this season is that Syd has never said, "He's dead." She's said things like "He should have been here," and she told the woman in the baby store, "He wishes he could do more" or something like that. So she either knows he's alive, she's in major denial, or, like us, she's clinging to hope. :-)

Hi Ang! Hadn't seen your posts in awhile. I agree with you too!! She has never really said "dead." Hmmm

SRM said...

yeah I've heard her refer to Vaughn as being dead, but it's only when she's talking to other people who most likely wouldn't be "in" on it, like Rachel, or the magazine person. She's never referred to him as dead when talking to Jack. :)

WOW! Great blog GirlScout.

I'm totally blended and slammed to the idea that MV is ALIVE! Hidden, but alive. Wether or not Jack and Syd is in on it, is completely eluding me. Syd gives hints, she possesses mystery and then Jack is just Jack. He always has stuff up his sleeve, and probably hanging on his back that nobody seems to be in on or notice. So guessing right now is too hard. But in my opinion, Jack has his toe in the water and helped spymommy dip her toe in it as well.

Forget the emotions (or lack thereof). Forget the cup, and the memory of the cup. Forget all the other little hints and possible inuendos with saving magazines and oblique glances between Syd and Jack. There is one driving force that absolutely convinced me that Vaughn lives and Jack knows about it.
There is about 43 minutes total for every episode, and with ALIAS, every moment is precious. There are no extra scenes or pointless conversations in ALIAS (unless you count Marshal's comedy-relief as pointless, which I don't). That scene - with Jack giving his "full authorization" and demanding the necessary elements for a person to go over seas with an alias - was not on screen with that sort of urgency and intensity only to say, "oops, too late." It is there screaming "Vaughn's hidden in recovery."

I think y'all are right that Syd doesn't know about his location, and purposely so. Recall: Jack was dying of radiation poisoning. he needed the one Doctor that no one could find because when Jack "hides someone, he stays hidden." I think it is the same with Vaughn, but the question is, does show know about the cover-up. I think so. Most people will not use double-meaning-rhetoric in the middle of straight forward conversations such as Syd has with Jack.

Oh, and Jack, having made the arrangements on the phone, means that Weise and Marshal know about it too. I think that is where Weise has been all this time.

Gotta run. Good blogging!

lhaaheim-

I think I might need to clarify for you- the article wasn't about whether or not Vaughn is dead, the article was about whether or not Syd was privy to the plans to hide Vaughn. Vaughn is alive; I think that as been stated several times on this site.

As for some of the points you made, I would like a chance to back myself up, especially if some of my points seemed wrong to you.

-One: Can we agree that Sydney has lacked emotion this entire season? She's pregnant and she hasn't so much as shed a tear (aside from the last episode where she was highly emotional). If the writers wanted her reaction to Vaughn’s death to be a clue to his being alive, then well, mission accomplished. But, if Sydney thinks Vaughn is dead, then her emotional hardness, due to all she has seen and experienced in her work, could justify her lack of an emotional reaction. In short, either she didn’t cry because she knows he’s still alive, or she didn’t cry because she thinks he’s dead and too hard to react as we might expect from a grieving, pregnant widow. It's ambiguous; it can be used either way.

-Two: When I said "But perhaps this phrase could also mean that he should have been there, but he’s dead, so he could not," I was using the word dead, not Sydney. She did use the word "gone" but that's not the word I was putting emphasis on, it was the word "should." "Should" could have been used as either, she knows he's alive and in hiding and couldn't come, but should have. Or she believes he's dead and he should have been there, but he couldn't.

-Three: You said "Vaughn is still alive, honestly what value would come out of making the audience believe that he might be alive if that were not true. Take it out of the show's story and look at it wholly. What do the writers gain, convey and achieve by this." Again, we aren't talking about whether or not Vaughn is dead or alive or what value it has. We are talking about whether Sydney knows this or not. We fans are smart- we all knew the minute the season 5 premiere was over that Vaughn was still alive. Go back and read my very first post!! The article was meant to show some of the ambiguous scenes and lines that could lead us to whether or not Sydney believes as we do.

Thank you lhaaheim for posting your ideas here. I just wanted to make the intension and point of the article are clear.

If I may address Sydney's current situation from a purely human standpoint for a moment, I would like to come back to the parallel that many of us have made from season three. The whole "I'm horrible" speach Syd lashed Vaughn with when the season was beginning. Many people have tauted this wonderfully acted scene as containing possibly the best dialogue in the history of ALIAS. To this I have objected, only to find myself in a very, very small minority. (It's okay. I'm used to that.)
In that oral flogging, Syd spat a highly emotional venum at him because he did what anyone (I dare say, everyone) would do when a loved one passes. He found a way to move on in life. Does anyone know anything more certain than DNA testing when seeking to identify a person? There was absolutely no evidence or reason why he would maintain hope that "maybe she's not dead." To expect a person to have "faith" without evidence is to expect them to act irrationally, which leads to a world full of chaos when everyone follows suit. As hurt as she felt, and as much as we hurt with her in that scene, what she was saying to Vaughn was completly unfair.
Now come to the present time and suppose (just for argument's sake, 'cause we all know otherwise) that there is no conspiracy to hide Vaughn away, and that Syd really sat beside him while he exhaled his last breath. Is there any reasonable expectation that she should wait around for his miraculous raising? I feel for her, because now, if she is true to her word, she would be caught in the very trap that stung Vaughn back in season three. Supposing he IS dead, in what should she place her "faith"?

Anyway, it's all moot, I know. He IS alive somewhere and eventually, as we expect, he will emerge, not resurrected, but simply healed from some very nasty bullet wounds. Anyone living in reality would have died from the first burst of the automatic assault weapon, but even after a second riddling, his swiss cheese body will make a full recovery. Syd and babygirl-Oscar will fake their own death and the three of them will find a nice cozy 2 million dollar home in a villa of Tuscany.

I agree Jenn, this topic has gotten a bit out of hand. I don't think anyone was trying to personally attack anyone here, but it was a simple question, yes or no, do you think she knows? I gave a few instances that may help us decide. I don't think I personally formed an opinion. It's too hard to tell. She could or she couldn't. So, I am just going to take everyone's opinion and wait until the show is back on the air.

Everyone take a deep breath. I suppose this is what happens when you get a group of passionate people together. It's good, but can create tension and that's the last thing we need. The plot is tense enough!

Girlscout said...

Robby, I agree with your faith comment. What should she base her faith on? Syd's emotional response to Vaughn in season 3, as she later says, was her being angry and confused by the happens that rendered her alone and scared and missing 2 years of her life. She felt betrayed, though in fact, Vaughn had not been "cavalier" about moving on.
If she believes he is dead, she has no basis to think he isn't. She say him get shot, the doctors told her it was iffy. Really, she watched him die. She can have faith in finding the people responsible, but technically she has to move on, for her own sake and her baby's. And let us remember, Sydney is not the same person she was in season 3.

Ihaa- I don't think Robetron's reference to "faith" was meant in a religious way. He was speaking about Vaughn's faith in Sydney, in Sydney's love for him and his love for her.

VAUGHN IS NOT DEAD!!!!!!!!

I had an epifone this morning. I thought back to an epi that I watched about a week ago. It is my second favorite episode. It is in S3 when Vaughn came to see Syd to see how "she was doing", and Syd delivered one awesome monologue. She talks about how he abandoned hope and how they had seen too many things in their line of work to assume anything. Then she said "I wouldn't have given up hope." Well, I had a major revelation today. I don't think Syd was in on his "death" but I don't think that she thinks he is dead. I know she has hope. AND, with all the clues that JJ has been giving for us fans...I don't think he would let us down. Oh Yeah, my most favorite epi is when Syd and Vaughn kissed for the first time after the toppling of SD6.

I couldn't agree with you more desiree. MV is completely alive, and I don't think that Syd would ever give up hope. As you have stated and we have heard her say, the world of alias has seen so much that nothing can be taken at face value.

**And, oh. I have my on blog now. I'll still post here, but I thought it better for me to post my ideas that isn't in current circulation at GS's blog at mine new one.

While I am not trying to inflame the above conversation, I just thought I'd add the fact that while Sydney may have been offended by how fast Vaughn seemed to move on, that was her INITIAL reaction, and a very emotional one at that. Sydney calmed down throughout that season.

Also, don't forget Lauren practically threw herself at him, after all she married him to get CIA secrets! It's actually a very believable plot line.

Now as to whether or not Sydney knows, I am still up in the air. The writers have done a beautiful job keeping me there. I am leaning towards the fact she does, after all, we know Prophet 5 wanted him dead...the only way to keep him safe would be to hide him away and let him recover, and for Syd to carry on exactly as she would if he really were dead!!!

I watched the epi where vaughn and syd are in North Korea and once again the writers have given us hope. Right before they are lead to "execution" syd says we will always find each other. I believe with the repetition of that idea, that the writers will follow through with them once again overcoming all obstacles life or death and will find each other. Also, I wonder if she will have the baby and then V comes back into the pic or if it will be before. I can't wait!

I had an idea!Right before Vaughn goes into cardiac and we see the scene with Jack talking about extraction teams A and B(please correct me if I am wrong, my vcr is broken), what if they buried vaughn in a coffin like Rene's dad. Something that kept him stable and but they were able to bury him in it. The team at the hospital would have been Team A and Team B would have dug him up. That would explain a lot. Tell me what you think.
