Scene Cap of the Week

Um, can you say heartbreaker?
Oh, saying goodbye is so hard, isn't it!? Look at the anguish on the face of our SpyGal! Sad. After Vaughn is riddled with bullets, Jack believes it is in the best interest of Vaughn, Sydney and bambino for the gang to fake Vaughn's death and send him into hiding.
This was the moment that launched Alias fans into a debate- Does Sydney know about Jack's plan? Is Vaughn really dead? WHAT IS GOING ON!? Well, for the most part our questions have been answered. Sydney did know of Jack's plan. And no, Vaughn was not dead.
I hated this moment. I hated that this was supposed to be Sydney and Vaughn's "last moment." I didn't cry, I was shocked! Shocked that it might be possible that our number one heart throb be killed off the show, that he would not meet his daughter or marry Syd for that matter. It was a cruel joke... a joke I was in on. I knew Vaughn wasn't dead. I knew Jack had a plan. But I still hated the moment.

HelloSark,

After this episode, the ABC boards were deluged with negativity. There were very few voices of reason and thoughtful analysis. It was your stedfastness that brought hope to many of the fans, and brought the rest of us to your blog. Personally, I eventually stopped visiting the ABC boards, prefering the maturity and elaboration of Let's Talk. This "cruel joke," was what brought most of us together, and certainly gave an explosion of life to the (still) growing community of 'Let's Talkers - also giving birth to many other blogs. Although I thought they carried it out too long in Season 5, I am thankful that Vaughn was turned to Swiss cheese. I might never have gotten to know the awsome folks who come here.

OH ME TOO JENN. I have been kicking myself for not thinking of starting the blog early. I don't even think I was aware of what a blog was before I started one. Plus, I didn't start watching Alias until season 4 was on TV.

I wish we could go back in time.

You are right, this scene was the one that started this blog. Ohhh, soo good.

Yep. The car crash of S4 started me on ABC, which pushed me over to obcession. Then came Vaughn's "death" which led to Let's Talk and further obcession. What a ride that last 12 months was!!!

Vaughn looks like me the night I got hammered on drambui at the office Christmas party many years ago...except for the part where he has a righteous babe attached to his forehead.

Righteous babe? I think you just gave your age away with that one Page. HAHAHA

LOL Page48!

One thing I didn't pay enough attention to until this blog was the music. I love the music in Alias, but never drew a connection between lyrics and plot. I just felt the feeling of the music.

When Vaughn was lying in the bed, I really didn't know if he was dead of alive. I thought there was no way they would kill him off, but then with the pregnancy, absolutely no Vaughn in the subsequent episodes, MV off contract, and the cancellation, that he might really be dead. This blog gave me hope! Truthfully, I don't think there is any way a person could be shot that many times and survive, especially after all Vaughn's body had been through before.

This begs the question, though Vaughn is an extreme hottie and adorable beyond compare, was he in need of more agent training? He was shot, captured and tortured more than anyone on Alias. Syd was only shot a couple times, none serious and yet she is in the field right in the action all the time. I realize this is storyline predicted, but it makes me laugh a little that she really kicks his ass when it comes to getting out of situations unscathed. I suppose the worst she was hurt was fighting evil Francie.

Talk to you all on Monday!!!

Hey Girlscout, righteous babes never go out of style.

Kellie, Vaughn was basically a desk jockey when Sydney "walked-in" to CIA, so I think it's fair to say that he could have benefited from maybe a correspondence course in the latest survival techniques before trying to keep up with Sydney in the field. However the 8,000 rounds he took in the chest occurred in Season 5, so perhaps he was just getting a little complacent after so many successful missions with Sydney.

Or maybe his extremely manly chest was safety rated for 9,000 rounds and therefore he wasn't all that worried.

I think Vaughn was wearing a vest, but with gun fire like that and an automatic weapon like Curtis', I think it penetrated his vest.

I remember discussions about Vaughn and how many hits he took back when this was fresh. I used to sell body armor (bullet proof vests to you civilians)and there are different levels of protection. The levels are rated on what type and caliber round it will stop, with a second rating being how many rounds of 9mm full auto it can withstand. I remember counting the number of rounds Vaughn took at 40-45. If he was wearing a full auto rated vest some of the rounds from the 9mm Beretta Curtis shot him with would have penetrated the vest- enough to possibly kill him, but also with the possibility of saving him.

Definitely a tense time in Alias land was that.

If he was wearing a vest, then I can believe it more easily. There was a lot of blood on his shirt, so I figured there was no vest. I loved how fast he recovered after he came back from the dead. He was back in the field kicking ass pretty fast holding his own against Anna (even though Syd saved him at the end of that fight).

I am so happy they ended with Vaughn coming back and the two of them together. Even though there were some disappointments in how they resolved the storylines, that is one point that I am grateful for.

I don't think he was wearing a vest. He didn't exactly have easy access to the CIA coffers of weapons or body armor at the time. That's not my point, though.

A police-officer friend of mine tells me that most law enforcement personel prefer the .40 caliber semi-auto because the bullets travel slower and have more stopping power, while the 9mm bullets tend to go right through an object causing minimal damage. At point blank range, as Vaughn was, the bullets with which he was hit probably went right through. Supposing Uncle's count was fairly accurate at 40 rounds shot, probably no more than 10 to 15 actually hit him. Everyone knows the full-automatic weapons are natoriously difficult to keep aimed at a target for extended bursts. Shot from the side, as it was, without a great deal of effort to aim, Vaughn was probably seriously hurt by probably 8 to 10 rounds.

The near miraculous survival of 8 to 10 mortal gunshot wounds? Well, that is what we call literary license.

;)

rob-
Actually, if the vests are rated for 9mm full auto, then they are able take multiple hits from 9mm submachine guns...up to a point. They fail when there are enough 9mm hits in the same spot. So, theoretically, if none of the rounds hit in the same spot his wounds would have been massive bruising, maybe a broken rib or two. The range he was shot from was not great enough to make the weapon in question, which is a very nice Italian subgun, stray out of the preferred target area, which is center body mass. For that reason there were probably a few spots where the vest failed, creating life threatening wounds.
The vest might have been one Vaughn "borrowed" from CIA, or obtained from black market sources in Italy or elsewhere. He actually could have bought it on eBay. I've purchased several of them there.

Future Alias writers will be glad to know there is body armor technology in development which will be made of specially treated material that is the same thickness as regular clothing that will harden to protection levels within millionths of a second of a blow and then return to normal cloth flexability. This will change everything in the body armor arena.

It will have a wide range of uses- gloves for people who use hammers and sharp objects, athletes socks and shoes to protect against the stress and potential of broken bones from landing after a jump, etc., etc.
