British Baddie is Back

After last week's episode, I spent some time pondering the return of our favorite boy to hate- Julian Sark. Last we saw him, he bedded Rachel and narrowly escaped the loss of his head while attached to a bomb. Now, he is back, back working for the one and only ally he has ever been truly loyal to- Arvin Sloane.

We are all well aware of Julian's admiration for Sloane- he looks up to him, idolizes him and now, in Arvin's time of need, Sloane has called upon Julian to no doubt do his dirty work. But let us not underestimate Sark. He is more than a gopher. He offed the leader of the FTL, he single handedly brought down K-Directorate, he traded Vaughn's antidote for Sloane's life and set in motion a strategic alliance between Sloane and Irina. Along side Lauren he became the co-chair of the North American cell for the Covenant and eventually killed Kazari Bomani. Each time he has either evaded the CIA or become their willing partner. He's got a school boy crush on our gal Syd and a burning hatred for Michael Vaughn. And he's back. He is back at the most important time- the end.

Sark's obsession with Rambaldi has been downplayed compared to Sloane and Irina's obsession- but the man has invested nearly $800 million in the research and discovery of all things Rambaldi. His father, Andrian Lazarey, bore the symbol of Rambaldi, but so fiercely refused to get involved with the Covenant that he faked his own death. Is it possible that Sark too, plays a role in Rambaldi's end game? What does Sloane need from our little British baddie? Are Sark, Sloane and Irina once again working together to acquire all the pieces to the puzzle?

Frankly, I am glad he's back. Aside from his sparkling blue eyes, blonde locks and randy accent, Sark always has a wrench to throw in the wheel. What will the wrench be this time?

Excellent article GS, I wish I had some brilliant theory to bring to the table but I'm just as clueless as the next Sark-lover. One thing I'm pretty sure about is that Sloane is secretly working with Sark to bring down P5...whether it's to fullfill his own Rambaldi endgame or keep P5 from exploiting it is the question. He always says that everything he's ever done has been for the "greater good", but usually anything that involves Sark does not have good intentions. I like the idea of the two of them working with Irena like in season 2, if that's the case then maybe we'll soon find out what the big deal is with The Horizon.

Its funny you mention the greater good, but I have always gotten the impression that Sark so desperately wants to be good, but on his own terms. One, he just wants Sydney to like him, he wants to work with her and he knows the only way that can happen is if he is good. But now, Syd has to be bad, as Ana, so he gets to have his cake and eat it too. I wonder if he might hook up with Rachel again, they totally have th hots for each other. HAHA

Correct me if I am wrong, but the last I remember of Sloane and Sark, they were on the 'outs' with one another. Sark had just shot Sloanse's bodyguards because Sloane was trying to double cross Sark and Lauren and trying to protect Nadia from thier insistance of forcing more Rambaldi fluid in her viens. It seems to me, these two men have some reconciling to do before they can work directly toegther.

yeah I think he blew off payment from APO when he helped them out back in the fall just to impress Rachel, I'd like to see them hook up again. :)

Oops, I didn't mean to publish yet.

I know Sark was forced to work with APO in the past while Sloane was at the head of the table, but that was an aliance of necessity. How do they dismiss the bad blood between them?

SRM said...

it's a good point robby, although that was a couple seasons ago. Sark was brought into APO in season 4 and expressed his sincere admiration for Sloane that he had worked his way into leading a high ranking CIA office again.

Sloane had orginally been on Lauren and Sark's side, he just got all sentimental about his daughter, and as we have seen recently, he doesn't seem to be sentimental anymore. Obviously Sloane and Sark are after the same end.
Remember, Sloane used his relationship to Nadia to manipulate Sydney's relationship with Jack. He made Sydney believe he was needed to find Nadia and in turn Sydney pleaded with Jack to save Sloane from execution. Sloane manipulates. All that green fluid business and Sark shooting at him could have been a show. We've seen it before.

Does anyone remember exactly what Sark's deal was with his father? Lazary faked his own death partly to "will" Sark the $800 million that Sark used to bankroll the Covenant. But it seems like he gave the money to the Covenant to spite his Dad and then he ordered Lauren to kill him. Also, why is his last name "Sark" and not Lazary? And how come he has a British accent if his dad was Russian? Just because a lot of foreigners who learn English have a British accent (the Queen's English!) or did he go to school in Great Britain, or was his mother British? Sark seems to have a really shadowy background. Maybe if he hates his dad as much as it seems and his dad had the Rambaldi symbol, Sark has been trying to destroy the whole Rambaldi cult all along? But Lazary seemed to be a decent sort. He & Syd collaborated when she was Julia Thorne to help each other by faking his death. So many questions...

Mommer, I have also wondered about Sark's past. He mentioned something to Lazarey about having a vague memory of a drunk man who used to beat is mother. So, Sark probably hates him for that. Also, Sark was pretty pissed that his dad tried to buy his love with the will. But Lazarey did seem like a decent guy. Sark didn't willingly give the money to the Covenant. Sydney realized that when she helped fake Lazarey's death, that a few months later Sark was broken out of jail. Sark didn't even know he had any money coming to him. But it did seem like perhaps he decided to work for the Covenant just to spite his father. Hmmm.

I think Syd can trust Sark. He has always been true to his word- he never told Sloane that Sydney offered him up to be killed in order to save Vaughn. Sark also, dropped Ana right back into CIA hands. Have you all checked out the clip for this week's show at aol.com? AWESOME!

Liz has that part right. Sark was forced to hand over the 800 mil in exchange for his life.

As for his accent, I believe he attended school in London (A coincidence with Lauren?) before getting deeply involved in espionage, and then with "The Man." There is another Russian/ Derevco link here.

Regarding his tendancy to do 'good' I think some of us have forgotten just how many people he has murdered in cold blood. Remember how we meet him in the first place? He shoots a kneeling man in the face with a shotgun out in front of a very large bank. There is ice in this man's blood, and the softer side we have seen is only when it pleases himself most.

Just because Lazarey was willing to work with Julia Thorn in order to save his own life, we should not conclude that he was necessarily a nice guy. He was workling for the Covenant before they gave the go ahead to have him exicuted.

Sorry for the long post.

No, nice job Robby. You are right. This is why we love to hate Sark, because he can be so charming and so good, but he has done some very bad things. Really, he is an amazing character- very complex. I really hope he can get a spin off.

Balthazar Getty aka Grace will be in a new show produced by Alias Director Ken Olin called Brothers and Sisters- about older siblings. Ron Rifkin is listed as a character and I beleive Patty Wettig, Ken's wife and the actress who played Dr. Barnett, will be on the show, as well as Calista Flockhart (Ally McBeal) and Rachell Griffiths (Six Feet Under), sounds really good. Also, JJ has another show coming out soon too, Six Degrees.

Re: Sark & his $800 million: didn't he tell Lauren he thought he should have more control over something he had essentially financed hence their plan to execute all of the cell leaders and take their watches in order to gain power. But all it got him was co-head of North America and sort of a double cross from Lauren as she cozied up to McKennas Cole. Did he just lose all that money when the Covenant went down? Part of his appeal is the combination of cold-blooded evilness + vulnerablity - he never seems to quite be in control of his own life, even though he's always freelancing and "his loyalties are flexible." He ends up doing the bidding of those he's working for rather than working with them as an equal partner of some sort.

Also, doesn't Sark seem to get caught more than just about anybody? He's like the poster boy for "catch & release!"

Angela said...

LOL about Sark's "catch and release." Too true!

I'd like to see Sark survive. Because I love his "my loyalties are flexible" charm; he seems capable of being rehabilitated . . . given the proper motivation (Rachel?)

In any case, remember that nasty dude played by Quentin Tarintino from season one? Tried to take down SD6? That guy was just cruel and vindictive. Sark doesn't seem to have the same mean streak in him.

Or maybe it's just that easy-going charm . . .

P.S. I always got the feeling that Sark was an illegitimate child of Lazarey's--so that's why he didn't have his last name. The product of an affair or something, which would account for the different home, accents, education, etc. In the scene where he is talking with Christian Slater (season two?) he talks about being brought up in an orphanage or boarding school, doesn't he? You get the feeling he was abandoned and learned to scrabble for his living . . .

Interesting Angie, I don't really see Sark's charm as easy-going so much as disarming (sort of like Irena). I guess I'm more w/ robby when it comes to seeing Sark as a bad boy and not so much a wannabe good boy. I honestly don't get the impression that he wants to be good, but for some reason I do think he admires Syd and wants her to like him (and/or want him). Then again, I wouldn't put rehabilitation past him...

I agree, SRG. Sark has never been good. I think the difference is that Sloane & Elena seem to be ideologically evil - they have a driving force (their beliefs) that trumps everything else and makes the end justify the means. Sark doesn't have that. He seems to have fun being bad, he revels in things like sleeping with Vaughn's wife and thwarting Syd & co. at every opportunity, but he isn't doing it for some greater Rambalian purpose that we know of. His loyalties are flexible! Irina seems to have elements of both camps - she enjoys being bad and manipulating all sides, but she also has the Rambaldi obsession as well.

Girlscout said...

Mike- the endgame at the end of season 4 for Elena's endgame not Rambaldi's. Elena was using Rambaldi for her own purpose- we have yet to know Rambaldi's true end game.

Dang- I wish I would have caught JJ on Kimmel, maybe it's on youtube.com

Going through divorce with the partner you love is like been in hell, my husband filed for a divorce without giving me reasons. I was totally down for I had no idea of what was happening and I tried to confront him to know what led to such action but he didn't give me listening ears.. I tried getting to know what happened through his family members but that didn't work either and this time was going mad about everything till I searched for help online and I came across Lord Zakuza contact number +1 (740) 573 9483 and I messaged him to let him know what I was going through and Lord Zakuza encouraged and promised to help me with his powerful spell and within 48 hours after contacting Lord Zakuza and followed all his instructions, my attorney called me to get me informed that the divorce case has been cancelled and after 30 minutes, I got a call from my husband pleading and begging for forgiveness and right now we are back together with so much love and care.
