Should I Stay or Should I Go Now?

An article by Contributor Jenn256.

As of late, there have been some great theories flying around the board about the conclusion to Alias, and even better questions that need to be addressed. One of these questions was brought up by Robetron on the post last week regarding Vaughn's adamant protests that Sydney was not in fact "The Chosen One". He has always been unwavering in his thoughts of Sydney not being the person that would fulfill Rambaldi's final prophecy, and has again, always been the one to pull her back when she was standing on the brink of quitting the CIA. Why? How does he know for certain that she is not "The Chosen One" and why has he gone to such lengths to keep her from walking away? How much more does he know than he has let on? Why was he marked for death and not Renee? Wouldn't she have just as much knowledge of P5's goings on as Vaughn, considering they did their investigation of P5 together? Was his work trying to uncover P5 secrets more about trying to keep Sydney safe in the future?

On the other side of the spectrum, why has Irina always tried to get Sydney out of the CIA? Has she always known about the prophecy and wanted to keep her daughter safe? As happy as she was to see Nadia on the plane after they rescued her from Elena, she did have a shocked reaction as well. Did she realize immediatley that the prophecy was more likely to come true now that her daughter's had met and were working together? I think we have all agreed that the little speech Irina gave Sydney in the bank during her labor was out of character. She has never been mother of the year material, however; that speech about never having wanted children and how Sydney could never manage work and motherhood now seems to me to have been a way to get Sydney to choose motherhood over the CIA, which could possibly save her life.

Who else has known about this prophecy, and are they people who have in the past tried to sway Sydney's decision to either leave or stay with the CIA?

In season 2, Sloane tells Syd something along the lines of "don't come after me or you will regret it." Is Sloane trying to protect her? No, I think not because as the last episode showed and stated, Sloane has almost always known that Syd would do the opposite of what he tells her to do. So Sloane could have very well continued Syd's path on this journey.

good point, Sloane has always known Syd better than she thinks, nad as the ultimate Rambaldi follower, maybe he wanted her to stay with the CIA because he too knows about the prophecy and wanted to see it fulfilled. And maybe his quest to fin THe Passenger was part of that, even is it did include his daughter.

Just wondering where exactly Vaughn convinced Sydney to stay. I remember in season 2 that she told him she was graduating and he asked if she was going to quit but I don't remember him ever trying to convince her to keep working. Could someone give the specifics?

Pretty sure Vaughn agreed with Kendall that Syd should stay in the CIA.

Yeah, Vaughn has always talked about how well they work together and how much work they have done in bringing down the bad guy. He might not have actualy said the word "don't leave the CIA" but he has said plenty in convincing her to stay. PLus, once they brought down SD-6, Sloane was free and Sydney was not having that. There has always been a reason to stay. PLus, Vaughn needed her too for his investigation into P5. He quit the CIA once she was dead because he no longer had a source- aside from a will to live. And once she was back- so was Vaughn.

It was strange how he came back to the cia immediately after Sydney reappeared. For someone who was really trying to move on with his life and new wife it always struck me as a little odd. Not that I wasn't glad he was back..

Me, too. It just made me feel that he wanted Syd in his life no matter how small.

yeah, I was thinking about that. He wanted her with him and wanted to work with her, but he was SO insistent that she wasn't the Chosen One that now it just seems odd.

Interesting article jenn, however I don't think Irena has tried to keep Syd out of the CIA. One of her best opportunities to let Syd walk away would have been in season 2 "A Dark Turn". Since SD-6 had been distroyed, Syd was only staying CIA to bring down Sloane. Irena convinced Jack that she was trying to bring Sloane in so Syd could leave, but instead betrayed them all by escaping w/ Sloane. She had to have known that would make Syd stay in the CIA to try and find her.

In Maternal Instinct it seemed to me that she was trying to "reverse psychology" Syd into staying in the CIA...challenging her by saying "you could never do this" and Syd in her stubborness retorting "watch me!"

I completely agree. Irina of all people would know that the best way to get Sydney to do something is to tell her she can't do it. Right?
I have a thought. I've been reading all the posts from over the weekend. GS made a comment about Elena planning for "every possible situation" during her collaboration with Irina. She knows Irina, and she's too smart to let herself get caught. GS thought that she cloned herself, and I certainly agree. I mean, she has the technology. BUT....what if she reverse cloned herself. Instead of taking someone else and making an Elena clone, she took someone else's DNA and gave herself the ultimate disguise. I mean, why would she want to clone herself just to be caught again? Wouldn't it be more to her advantage to assume the appearance of someone unknown to all those she is hiding from?
You'll notice we haven't seen her in awhile. If what I'm getting at could be true, she could be anywhere. She could be Grace. She could be Rachel. She could be Peyton. Or she could be someone else we haven't seen yet. Or I could be totally out there.

HOLY CRAP starbucks mom, you just opened a whole new barrel of worms with that idea! It's fantastic, what a twist that would be!!

okay, so lets go with that idea, that Irina has always been very quick to keep Syd in the CIA- why? Wouldn't she be safer in the outside world as a teacher leaving the dangerous syp world behind? WOuldn't it have been better if Syd had left before she found out the horrible things about her mom?

This was a thought that was brought up by several others in a pervious blog and I just thought it was interesting, but I guess not.

no you're right jenn, Irena must have some other reasons we're not aware of for wanting to keep Syd in the CIA. Logically it would make sense to coax Syd out of it so both of them would be safer, but Irena always seems to have some hidden agenda or way she wants to use Syd (and Jack) to her advantage.

Oh, this is very interesting Jenn. There is something vaughn knows and something Irina knows and I really hope we find out what it is and how it pertains to Syd's involvement in the CIA.

I think I must have mixed up my theories when typing this out. I ran the post idea by GS the other night at around midnight my time and it made sense then, and now that I read the original post I doesn't, I think I mixed up my theories. So yes, I do think Irina has been keeping her in the CIA for some reason-maybe for her to uncover the truth about the prophecy? We know it must be for her own agenda, we all think deep down she's good, but definatley has no problem using Jack and Sydney for her own agenda.

Kiki said...

Oh I see, you meant to mention that she probaly was tryig reverse psychology in order to keep Sydney in the CIA. Makes sense. Either way, Irina has a reason for it.
